I was literally just thinking about this game again after playing Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman for the first time last night. GET OUT OF MY WALLS! This game is criminally underrated. It may not be the best made game of all time, but once you get down the rhythm to play Samurai Western on the higher difficulties, it's an absolute blast. It may be a 6-7/10 in terms of how well it's developed, but it has been on my list of GOAT games for over 10 years now. It's just so frigon fun.

I love this game. Bought it on a whim at a used game store for.... more than I'd have liked (about 80 USD), but was worth every penny once I got into it. It's Devil May Cry meets Red Dead Revolver, and it got me to pick up Way of the Samurai as well which I need to get more into (thankfully that one was a lot cheaper lol). The dress up and sheer variety of stuff in the game was delightful, and it absolutely nails that sort of weird 90s/00s alt-Western anime vibe. Glad to see it getting love.

YES!!! What makes the combat even more satisfying is that while you're deflect ability hits enemies sometimes, hitting the bullets with regular attacks hits them every time, so there's a great risk vs reward mechanic there. It even works when you're using the DT ability which allows you to reflect everything regardless of the firing speed like Jean's Gatling Gun. Also, the unlockables have stats boosts which aren't super interesting on lower difficulties, but really help on higher levels and on the challenges like finishing with taking no damage, or in record speed which can all be done in different attempts. You can level them up with the coins you get on the levels and there are set bonuses "like the one that makes you look like a locomotive that increases your movement speed). You can unlock basically every character in the game to play as a skin of your character, including the children and there's even a few secret levels you can get that have story related cutscenes. It's a great game to come back every now and then and find something new.

Check out "Shinobido: Way of the Ninja" by "Acquire" sometime, as for me, despite some unsuccessful decisions, this is the right evolution of the PS1 "Tenchu" dilogy. At the beginning, the game will seem very cheap and unfinished, but as you catch the pace of gameplay, the thought will come that it has an interestingly constructed gameplay basics with good and solid ideas.

Acquire was the original creator of Tenchu but somehow other developer (K2) took over the series in PS2 days. Then Acquire created their own not-Tenchu called Shinobido. I haven't play Kamiwaza nor I know which one released first but from brief moment I see it looks like Kamiwaza was based on Shinobido's engine and assets. I think Shinobido itself is an interesting series, because it's very familiar yet has its own unique take on Tenchu's formula. And it lived long enough until PS Vita era too.

Ah, with the mention of Way of the Samurai, it makes sense: the bits of music shown in the video reminded me a lot of that game, which is to be expected to an extent for the setting, but some of the flair and the instrumentation of that music was too similar for me to ignore. I was wondering if it was the same composer, I haven't checked, but if it's a spin off of sorts, then that'd make sense.

I loved this game as a kid! Me and my friends would play the co-op mode, it was total chaos since whoever was playing Ralph (the cowboy who doesn't really do anything in gameplay in single-player) didn't get any camera control. You were just blindly firing bullets around the stage, which unlike enemy bullets were capable of chunking player-one's health. We had a running joke where we would get far into the stage and the Ralph player would just suddenly run up and pop Gojiro, leading to an instant loss. This is made exponentially worse when you finish co-op mode and unlock *shotguns* for Ralph. We also used Action-Replay (since we didn't want to unlock it for real) to access the character model swapper, letting you replace Gojiro with literally any NPC model in the entire game. Our favorites were either Goldberg wielding a sword that looked like a cool stick he found in his giant hands, or one of the little kids, dodging bullets and slicing men in half diagonally. Bronze medal was Ronald, finally becoming "samurai Ronald"
