Thank you Pierre, I completely agree. I have been singing the praises of the SLC’s for years. The driving dynamics are so much better than the SL’s and they look and feel great. I know you have advised against the single timing chain 380SLC’s but a twin chain version of the 380SLC’s (European spec) are delightful and in my opinion even more enjoyable than the standard 450SLC’s. thank you for your posts, all of which I enjoy.

I have the 75 450 SLC and thanks to your channel I can work on it myself. I do drive it at least twice a week , gets a whole lot of looks and attention. I love the SLC's much more the the SL's mostly because there are so many SL's everywhere. I prefer the look, the ride and the fact there are not too many to be seen. I know the 75 is the least sought after and that is okay with me, I love mine it runs so beautifully and if you keep the maintenance up they last forever.

The SLC is not undervalued in Europe, I believe. The most undervalued in my opinion would be the W124 260E and 300E.

I knew it ! I couldn't agree more, this year I picked up a very rare grey market 87 euro 560sel hpf2 (full hydraulic suspension) and two 350slc euro manual transmission and 5.0 slc Pierre has mentioned this before and I listened slc cars are special

Hey Pierre, I just had the 4 speed auto on my 1980 500SL rebuilt and my goodness even after eight years of ownership I'm still excited every single day using this special car as my daily driver. I agree that the official 240hp(177kw) rating is very much on the low side of reality if my car is anything to go by. BTW, I have recently acquired a high compression 5litre kjet engine and gearbox and I'm actively looking for a 1980 or 1981 SLC to transplant it into, let the fun begin.

I believe you really nailed it Pierre! I have 3 of the euro SLC's with 5.0L engines and love them!. I greatly prefer the '80-'81 versions with the 4-spd automatics. They run better and are more durable. I believe most don't realize how much heavier the 500SL is. The SLC's are wonderful handling performers and give very little trouble when they receive routine maintenance. You may not know it but the ones with A/C could even be equipped with an optional higher flow thermostat housing that help noticeably to control temperatures in warmer US climes. Seeing good ones below $20k would surprise me - they should be about $40k and rising these days.

The East African Safari Rally 🦓is the original one, way before the Paris to Dakar 🐪Rally came about. First started in 1953, it ran through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania during the 3 days of Easter weekend and it tested both men and machines over some really bad, dusty, muddy stretches. There were also cold places such as the highlands of Kenya 🐘and hot 'n dusty areas like the African savanna. In the early 70's, the Japanese came to dominate the rally with the Datsuns 240Z and 1600SSS (Bluebird 510). As a child growing up in Uganda, I remember Shekar Mehta, and another driver the late Joginder Singh. 🦩The Mercedes-Benz SLC rallyed after my family moved overseas. 🦁

I've always been a huge fan of the SLC, especially of course the 500/450 5.0. It's an elegant, high performance (for the era) luxury GT but it's completely overshadowed by the SL because it's a convertible. It's very underappreciated but I see it as truly special.

I just sold a really, really cool Euro 380 SLC on BaT last month... 4 speed automatic with the early M116.960 motor with 218 HP, not the anemic 155 HP of U.S. market 380s. I've always liked the SLC. Also, if I join your Patreon... can I specify that the money I donate goes toward the build out of a luxurious, multi-head shower system (with steam) for your shop? Only trying to help.

I thought for a minute......SLC.Bingo.Though I dont own one,yet,I plan on it.They are beautiful,maybe more so than the 380 SEC,that I do own.The 500 SEC was never sold new in Australia for some reason.

It makes sense that the R129 would be the more valuable and sought after SL. It’s ahead in every way, build quality is just as good or better, is better suited to today’s roads and traffic by far, handles/performs far better, is more efficient and powerful, isn’t prone to rust... AND is easier/cheaper/less complicated to own, repair and maintain. There is absolutely no upside to the old mechanical injection. It’s less precise, more complicated, has far more moving parts to wear meaning many diagnostic variables, and there aren’t many people out there who can still understand them, or are willing to learn.

I do admit the 450slc 5.0 is the most "hardcore" of the r107 models. Like they were one of the extremely few cars (including the w116 6.9) that had a factory installed limited slip diff as standard from Mercedes. And yeah the rallies like the east Africa rally were no joke they were BRUTAL. They're to rally what 24H of Le Mans is to circuit racing only on steroids. The cars after these races looks like they've went to a warzone and there is a documentary on youtube talking about the 1979 safari rally where Hannu Mikkola drove one of three slcs which he came second followed by Walter Rohrl in third in a fiat 131 Abarth (A very well established car in the rally scene as it already won the WRC in 1971)

Thank you Pierre for another good vid. Could you tell us what is the difference between 500 SLC and 450 SLC 5.0 apart from the transmission? And what is your opinion on 3 vs. 4 gear trans on these?

I think the 124 is undervalued. At least right now. They sort of signaled the end of the ornate, "bespoke" Benz that was the norm up until the mid-1980's. They're kind of bland and lack all of the curves and chrome trim in most models that were seen before. nlike the cars that came after it, it's still a very solidly built lump of a car that can take a beating for hundreds of thousands of miles. They're not nearly appreciated enough for the absolute tractor that they are. They are pure function through engineering. You can pick up a reasonable example of one for $2500 these days, and now is the time to do it.

Was the 5 liter 450SLC ever sold in the USA by Mercedes Benz or were they all imported by individuals?

I had one in 2006-07 in amazing shape that was brought in from the Netherlands. You’re right, at 80+ it woke up. I sold it to someone in Florida so hopefully it’s kicking around down there in good nick.

The 300e by far over the SLC. You can buy a 300e all day long for $2500. A beater SLC is still $7000

I don't agree. You can get a better engine, and better interior, and build quality by purchasing a 560 SEC. The 560 SEC is lighter, has a larger displacement motor, has the dual timing chains, and has usable back seats, and a trunk. It also weighs less than the 560SL, or any SLC's.

Malheureusement, à partir de 2030, toutes les voitures à combustion, y compris les classiques, seront interdites dans les rues publiques de toute l'UE et de la Scandinavie :-( En Allemagne, le Parti populaire vert a donné l'ordre de raccourcir l'approvisionnement en carburant à partir de 2025 en réduisant toutes les stations-service conventionnelles à une seule centrale exploitée par l'État. station-service par ville ou comté. Maintenant, ils veulent même ralentir toutes les pompes à essence de 20 litres par minute à 2 litres par minute... À partir de 2027 dans l'UE, certaines pièces de rechange automobiles seront également interdites... comme les systèmes d'échappement, les turbocompresseurs et même certaines huiles de moteur et de boîte de vitesses... La Californie et New York feront de même à partir de 2027... Il ne faut donc plus investir dans les voitures à pétrole... Ils ont même créé un nouveau type de crime ici, appelé crime lié aux émissions et à la fumée.
