Still no Vintera to do the comparison to the 50's Classic Vibe. So we decided to do a useless comparison instead. At least we hope it's entertaining.

I think the major difference is in the feel when playing, because sound wise i'm not a guitarist but i'm a producer, and even though the Fender sounds better it really isn't that big of a difference when put into a song. I can guarantee you the listener won't tell a difference in the final product.

I bought a Classic Vibe some years ago because I needed a Tele style guitar just for a couple of tunes in the middle of a long live set. I kept it for quite a bit of time, had a nice sound and was a really overall reliable guitar. Sold it when I had the opportunity to get a good deal on an american Original '60, but really I could have kept gigging it forever.

I have the older Chinese-made butterscotch one with Tonerider pickups. The only mod I did to it was to install a 4-way switch. I can't imagine how that guitar could sound any better. There's a video on KZfaq where a guy replaces the stock pickups with Texas Specials and it sounded EXACTLY the same. I've played and owned a lot of Teles, and the CV '50s Squier (the Chinese ones, anyway, I don't know about the ones made in Indonesia) can stand up to any American Fender straight out of the box. In regards to this particular comparison, though; the Custom Shop Tele had a little more output, maybe a touch brighter, but that's about it. They both sounded good. Just a touch of EQ on either guitar could make them sound identical.

I think this was a much fairer fight than this guy was willing to admit. I thought the Squier sounded warmer and fuller than the Custom Shop while nailing all the classic Tele tones. Also notice how the Squier stayed in tune throughout the demo. Someone else said it, so I’m stealing a comment, but this is a useless comparison because the Squier, at 1/3rd the price, won!

I was at Long-macquade tonite. I played the mexican player series, the usa performer i think is the name, the squier cv 50's butterscoth and the cv 60's custom sunburst. The better looking butterscotch, by far, is the 50's classic vibe squier. Pine body, just like the original was. The satin finish of the mexican player neck is the best of all. The profile of the squir cv is the best ( same neck for both 50's and 60's custom) and to me , the usa sounds better then the mexican, but the squier sounds better then the mexican too🤷‍♂️ the only reason i disnt left the store with the squier tonite, is that i cant decide between the cv 50's butterscotch and the cv 60's custom sunburst. Im gonna sleep on it, and get back there to get the squier tomorow, wich one? Im not shure yet😂 no reason to pay 4 time the price for the usa model or twice for the mexican. Get the squier cv, and modify it to your own taste. Its still gonna cost you less then the "F" name on the headstock

I have three telecasters the CV, American performer, and the American professional II. They are sound very different... but I can't sell my CV because it sounds so good... different than my others but just as good. I haven't played the custom shop model... but I highly doubt that it sounds better than all three of mine just different. I could be wrong but again I highly doubt it. You just need to adjust the eq and volume better for each guitar and then you'll realize that the more you pay doesn't always equal better tone... just different tone. But keep trying yourself that. I don't have a custom shop telecaster but I have a core 24 PRS, a fender American custom strat, etc and the CV holds up stellar against the best guitars I've ever played in terms of tone...

Honestly ! A comparison of both guitars only makes sense if both have the same pickups installed. Furthermore, it makes a big difference whether I have brass riders or chrome riders on the bridge. And both guitars should have the same strings on them. Custom shop guitars are not worth the money at all. Overpriced! Get on stage and play both guitars. The audience doesn't hear the difference in the band context anyway. The same in the studio. Nobody hears a difference. It's easier to hear an amp on production than a CV Squier or a Custom Shop guitar. Both guitars sound good on the video. One sounds like this and the other like this. None sounds bad or better. Everything else is imagination.

This video is not useless, it serves to demonstrate how good of a value the Squire is. I saw another video where someone put some Texas Heat pickups (can't exactly recall the model) in a Squire CV and the difference was not worth the cost of the pickups. After reading a lot of the comments below, its apparent to me that the custom shop albeit being a differently made guitar with better hardware, different applications of lacquer, and more attention to detail, spending the extra money on the marginally better sounding custom shop is for the purists that want to also listen with their eyes and have the glory of owning a "Custom Shop Fender", which I understand. However if you are listening with your ears, it's probably not worth the extra money as the Squire is well worth its cost and sounds terrific.

For the money, the Squier Classic Vibe is the better deal. Face it no Telecaster is worth the money paid for them. Of simple design, construction, and easy to manufacture, It is as most who buy and play them, not highly sophisticated, being more dependent upon the amp and effects to get a sound that they like. I've been playing for forty-plus years, and I include myself among them.

I saw another video too where the guy owns the CV and a professional 52 and if every clip the CV sounded significantly better. But this is a custom shop. If the custom shop does actually sounds better I'm sure higher end pickups in the CV would make it sound just as good...or just adjusting the amp EQ a bit... since every guitar inherently has more bass or treble... which can be adjusted.

-the custom shop's more responsive - more resonance, with more "crunch" and "chime" sound / -the CV's slightly more "solid" sounding, and gives a slightly rounder, warmer tone - the CV has a much better appearance - the comparison's not unfair - the CV may not be as good as the custom shop guitar, but it's comparable, soundwise - the CV may not "feel" as good to play, but the sound is comparable, especially if the 2 guitars were being played in a mix - as you say, the CV's a great guitar for the price - and I agree - better pickups are a good idea - an mfd on the bridge, and a texas special on the neck

Rather than comparing sound I'd be more interested in a comparison of the nut height, fret dressing, saddle adjustment needed? You can make them sound very similar with the right peddles or a pickup change but if the fretboard/neck is bad you will always struggle to make it feel nice to play.

On solidbody guitars, it is way better, to have more weight. You do not play with a Microphone to pick up the acoustic sound, so less vibration in the body means better response of the string and Pickup sound. While playing, everybody can feel, like yourself, that you payed way too much money for the custom shop guitar.

I have been a gigging and studio recording guitarist since the 1960s. I have amassed a sizable guitar collection over that time…in-fact I own a number of vintage guitars including a 1957 Telecaster. I also own a Squire Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster which I purchased when they were first released (they had brass saddles at that time)…I find it to be a very good Guitar once it has received a proper set-up. I would never think of taking any of my highly valuable guitars out on a gig…because of the risk of theft. I take the Squire Telecaster, a Fender Mexican Strat and a PRS SE Paul’s Guitar out on gigs…not the much more expensive versions of those guitars that I own as well…these guitars do a great job and are valued such that if someone stole one I would not have a huge loss. The Squire Classic Vibe 50 Telecaster has a great price/performance ratio…and with a proper set-up, is perfectly capable of being used as a gigging guitar.

Not useless at all, it shows how good sounds Squier until you listen to the Custom and then things change but the Squier can be used without problems for professional use... in other words, it's like comparing a Maserati to a Ferrari...

You can buy a cheap squire and replace the pick ups, switch plate with better switch and pot , locking tuners, some attention to the frets and it would be extremely difficult to tell the difference. Squires are great value. Only a fool would want a relic guitar. Put the Nics and dings by playing it yourself.

I honestly at a certain point sound isn’t a whole lot difference but it’s about the feel and presentation to the player.

I have the white 50s vibe Squier with Alnico 3 pups - this butterscotch one has Alnico 5s but sounds so similar! I actually like ceramic pups for the softer sound in my other Squier Teles. Hope this helps.

The Squier sounds good but the Custom Shop says “I’m the daddy!”

Not useless but unfair is right. Anyway the Squier is great for beginners or people who just want to keep cool not taking much care of their guitar or also those who just don't want to break the bank for a guitar. Sure... The real fender baby is better as an instrument.. At some point money has importance.

I have a Squire Telecaster. I hear that wooly sound from the cheaper neck pickup. It’s easily fixed with EQ. The Custom Shop sound wise anyway, is not $1,700 better

I have a CV Tele, and I found it’s pickups to be muddy and not exactly awe inspiring. I replaced them with a set of Lollars, and now she is amazing.

With the fan going in my office and through an iPhone speaker, the first comparison sounds the same. Lol. And my CV is more resonant than I had expected. But I’m sure the playability and feel of the Custom Shop is a thousand points better than the Squier. And I’m sure those pups actually do sound better than the CV.

Raw guitar tone is never heard on a record. By the time you put an EQ, compressor, overdrive, delay, chorus, reverb, etc. you can sound like a champ. For me a high end guitar is about how it feels in your hands. But that is subjective. Pro tip, if you have a grandson that comes over and plays with your guitars, buy the Squire.

Both functional serviceable workhorse guitars. Get one or the other .. or get both ! You’ll worry less gigging with squire. I’ve seen Vince gill playing a squire. 🤷‍♀️ Or get an mim player series .. nice happy medium … happy with mine !

Why are Squiers so yellow? It's horrible. Sound wise I think the pickups are very close and the bridge pickups are undistinguishable in a blind test. And why are CS guitars so ridiculously expensive?

if there is more resonance felt in the body, (as in the Fender), would that not affect the sustain? Great playing, Thanks.

I like the cheap one better on looks, but the custom shop one sounded more stable and played better. The player seemed to have a bit more freedom.
