Sometimes you just want something specialized. Something you hope thru careful design and execution you'll use for a lifetime. This was my goal with this specialty lathe tool handle. Fitted, weighted, sized, and shaped to serve one specific need. Plus we had to make it wicked cool along the way.

For the weighted end, as a machinist, I would have hollowed out the end, perhaps 4"- 6" deep with a forstner bit. Then epoxy an internally threaded brass fitting inside the end of the handle. With an internal thread you can then use a threaded plug such as a brass or stainless steel set screw or pipe plug - lots of options, so it ends up flush. Now fill this with BBs and insert the plug. If you dont want the BBs rattling around, put in a small piece of foam to take up the extra space. The end result will look much better without that ugly piece of pipe hanging off the end. You've got a great idea, but it just needs to be pimped out a bit more.

Very nice handle.... I am a paraplegic, I have my lathe set on a very low hand made bench, and I really have to use my whole are instead of just my hands so I decided that making my own handles works the best for me. I REALLY like the dead blow in the back of the handle so now i am redesigning the 5/8 gouge that I am making now. The only thing I am going to change is I am going to try to inset what I use to hold the BB's and then thread a wood cover over it for a little smother look. Thanks for a great video and I subscribed hoping to see a lot more

I have always had the gift of prophecy and I suggest you take a trip across a bridge and think about high school science class, I see a new Ferrule design entering your mind if you do this. Lol, Yes I watched your other video on Ferrules prior to watching this one lolol. That was a pretty good thought about heating the wood up, this method is also a good one but I think the heating method will provide a better and more durable fit over time. Now about this handle, I was just tonight talking to my fiance' about this tool you just made since I saw it in another video, I wondered where you bought it at, lol now I know you made it! I think I will do this for myself as well, thanks for sharing this!

I know a lot of the Safety Sallies out there abhor the use of gloves around wood lathes. Personally I think after one has gotten past the seriously awkward stage - we've all been there - that tight-fitting gloves like you are using (I use Ironclad 'Framer' gloves - not a plug, just saying) make the turning process much more comfortable. Cheers!
