@@enough-is-enough-is-enough Except that Edwina was not a grifter nor did she charge for her "services" Edwina was undoubtably promiscuous [Given what we now know of "Dickie" perhaps he did not satisfy her? I had always thought that it was Dickies family connections that got him his important military positions. It is interesting to learn just how hard working and talented he was. That he FOUGHT to improve the naval armaments before WW2 is praise worthy.

But then again I am in my early 60’s, Christian, wife of a retired Naval officer, mother and grandmother. Your eye rolling and commentary re: the wealthy of the past duplicate my reactions! People always grouse about Dickie’s obsession with being number one and his workaholic, top ship shape expectations, but I’m sure we’re going to see that these qualities are going to be VERY important with the dawn of WW II. Could you imagine if the navy was in WW1 state?

Although I haven't commented on your Netflix series review, the points you made were substantial and of more than a passing interest. If you do more of those, I'll certainly be interested. As for the Mountbatten book, you're doing well with material that can only repeat itself at this stage of the story. The future beckons, though, with a lot more to come. They ain't done yet. 🌹

It's a miracle that the letter from the hotel in Hungary actually reached Edwina, given that she seemed to only stay at one address for (as Cheere might say 🙂) a hot second. Anything could have happened to Patricia and Pamela by the time she turned up.

Funny Facts - Bunny Phillips married Nada Milford Haven’s niece and his daughter Natalia married England’s richest aristocrat the Duke of Westminster, the Duchess was good friends with Princess Diana and is one of Prince William’s god mothers and her son (Bunny’s Grandson) is god father to both Prince George and Prince Archie. The Duke who is worth 12 billion pounds is getting married this summer wedding of the year and Harry and Meaghan were not invited because the Duke did not want to upset the rest of the royal family. All the characters in all your books on royalty keep coming back and forth

I am so glad that the young Duke of Westminster and his bride 2 B invited the real royals. Not the simulated discount royals. The problem w Mrs Harry is she thrives on attention whether it is good or bad. In Nigeria her clothing was 165k dollars worth of inappropriate in the country. But the ‘press’ laps it up. So disappointed w that. Stp feeding the monsters.

This was another fascinating chapter! Edwina really does seem like she was a trainwreck. I mean, how does one FORGET where you have left your children??! I'm beginning to wonder if one of her "gynecological issues" was actually either a full hysterectomy or at the very least had her tubes tied. Because surely, you can't continue to have so much unprotected $ex (presumably...it was the 20s and 30s after all) with so many partners and not have a high risk of becoming pregnant. Given that she obviously seemed uninterested in anything to do with motherhood I think she took care of the matter, allowing herself absolute freedom from nasty consequences to continue her hedonistic lifestyle. Mother of the Year she was NOT. Would love you to cover other mediums on this channel Cheere...I really enjoyed your take on the whole Baby Reindeer phenomenon. And yes please - NO more Harry and VolderMeg...we need a break from that insanity!

If you are going to review Documentaries then I highly recommend Documentary on Louis mountbatten's sister and mother of prince philip princess Alice. She was the most remarkable woman. After reading about Louis & Edwina, Harry & Meghan, and David & Wallis, one get impression that all royals lives hedonistic life but Princess Alice was very different from all of them. She lead life of duty and service. She is my favorite royal and I think if any royal who was more remarkable than Queen then it was Princess Alice. She had tragica life but she never complained and held her head high and dedicated her life in to service of others. Her story is very tragic and it's also give insight in to prince philip's tragic childhood

Saying that Edwina had wanderlust is a huge understatement - LOL! Thank goodness Dickie was such a nurturing father, but I'm sure with his naval career, nannies were left to raise his children the majority of the time. I was surprised to hear the author mention the custody trial of Gloria Vanderbilt, possibly only for historical reference, because it did not seem to have anything to do directly with the lives of Dickie and Edwina. Cheere, I enjoyed your review of Baby Reindeer, and I would definitely be interested in any other movie or television documentaries you may be considering reviewing. I've grown weary of Harry and his 43% Nigerian wife (LOL!), but sadly, it seems like dysfunctional and polarizing individuals will always attract attention and viewers. There are so many other things you can cover while steering clear of this gruesome twosome.

You have to think, after learning all this about King Charles’ great mentor, that no wonder Mountbatten urged them-Prince Charles to “sow his wild oats” before choosing a wife. At this point I’m not sure if he was urging Charles to choose a wife only when he was certain she was one he would be faithful to, or if in fact Mountbatten thought it would be fine for Charles to have a mistress/ mistresses after marriage as well as before.

Yay! Cheere Denise is back for chapter 9! ❤👍😊 Paul L. Robeson (1898 - 1976) was not only a fantastic singer and actor, well educated (Degrees from: Rutgers, Columbia, London University) as well as being a genuine humanitarian; *he was a dyed in the wool Communist!* (from a young age). Although both International Communism and National Socialism (Nazism) are creatures of the political Left. At the time, Nazism was viewed as less dangerous than Communism. Of course this was before WW2. (imo: both are equally abhorrent) Regarding the "Penthouse:" Children and grandchildren of the Gilded Age's Robber Barons liked to live large. Edwina was no exception. (Their incomes were the equivalent of a billionaire's nowadays) EDIT TO ADD: I agree with you about changes to your channel's content. The hardest thing about biographies of the BRF is keeping track of the family links. Wikipedia articles can be helpful to remember who is who. For Example: Louis Mountbatten's parents and siblings were: FATHER: " *Louis Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess * *of Milford Haven* (1854 - 1921) Formerly Prince Louis Alexander of Battenberg [until 1917], was a British naval officer and German prince [from a morganic family line] related by marriage to the British royal family. He married one of the granddaughters of Queen Victoria." -- Wikipedia MOTHER: " *Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine,* (then Princess Louis of Battenberg, later Victoria Mountbatten, [as of 1917] ) *Marchioness of Milford Haven* (1863 -1950) She was the eldest daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom (she was also a daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha." -- Wikipedia *LOUIS' AND VICTORIA's 4 CHILDREN* *(1) Alice, Princess Andrew of Greece and Denmark* (1885--1969) She was born as "Princess Alice of Battenberg" The family name was changed to "Mountbatten" in 1917. She married one of the younger sons of the King of Greece and Denmark of the royal house of Glücksburg. They had 4 daughters before WW1. Their only son, Philip (1921--2021) was born after WW1. Her son became Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh when he married Princess Elizabeth of Windsor, later known as Queen Elizabeth II of the UK. Before his marriage Philip had to give up his family name (He adopted the name Mountbatten in 1947) as well his royal style of HRH of Greece and Denmark when he married Elizabeth. [Law = No foreign titles] He had been given the title of Duke of Edinburgh, by his future father-in-law (i.e. George VI) hours before his marriage to Princess Elizabeth of the UK, the Princess of Wales. After he had been married to Elizabeth II and after their first child, Charles [later Charles III], was born; Philip was crowned a prince of the UK by his wife and received the style of H.R.H. (His Royal Highness) of the UK In other words: Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh *(2) Louise Alexandra Marie Irene Mountbatten* (born Princess Louise of Battenberg 1889 - 1965) was Queen of Sweden (r.1950 --1965)as the wife of King Gustaf VI Adolf. Wondering if Edwina was Bipolar. Also wondering what kind of diseases she dealt with from all of her encounters with men before the discovery of penicillin. My heart goes out to those poor children being forgotten in another country with improper clothing.

It doesn’t make any sense why Edwina would defend the stepmother who’s been nothing but horrible to her and her sister. You would think she’d be the first to break out the champagne and party like it’s the Roaring 20’s upon hearing about her dad wanting to divorce.

Because, back then her father would have been ostracized from upper class circle if had divorced his wife, and Edwina didn't want that to happen.

Cheere I nominate "A Woman of No Importance" a biography of Virgina Hall, American (Baltimore born) + arguably the most effective spy of WWII. Just saw the recap of her life on KZfaq + the comments RAVE about the book. She was was an unambiguous WWII hero + also paved the way for women in the State Department. After all this strange behavior, a breath of fresh air.

Dickie knew he was trapped with Edwina. Fortunately, aside from interfering with his ocassional paramours + getting herself into legal trouble, she largely left him to his own devices. (Thank goodness.)

50:29 “Sins of our Mother” is a Netflix documentary about the Lori Vallow-Chad Daybell case. I’ve been watching the Chad Daybell trial and it is unbelievable. I would love to hear your take on that one. TBH I don’t care to hear more about the Harkles saga.

Even though Mountbatten worked hard a good military wife can and does help a military office move up the ladder if promotion. One that's a discraced, missing, or a bad hostess/socialite can stunt a career.

The Royal family really disapproved of divorce and divorce lawsuits especially. (Remember their hatred of the DOW.) Mountbatten needed the Royal Family on his side for his career.

Robeson’s political views were not popular with the ‘upper’ classes. He was, however brilliantly gifted in many areas from sport to intellectual activities as well as having a wonderful voice. Politically not so ‘safe’ and probably beyond the pale for most of her society and family friends.

I would really like to see you mix it up with reviews of shows. As for this book, I had a hard time slogging through it. Not because of the actual material but because of the behavior. I have found that this time period is just so bizarre in many ways. The societal moraes and dissatisfaction reminds me of current themes though, so alot to learn.
