His abdication was the best thing to happen to the British monarchy. He was so morally compromised and his brother was the picture of morality. King George and then Queen Elizabeth saved the Monarchy

To spare the current King blushes for his grandfather, King George VI was actually named Albert (called Bertie by the family) and used his 4th name, George, as his name regnant. He was never called Prince George…before becoming King, he was Prince Albert, Duke of York. He and David had a younger brother with the first name of George (George Edward Alexander Edmund), who was later named the Duke of Kent. This brother with the first name of George is the Prince George who was being blackmailed by the gigolo. He had a scandalous reputation. He died in an air crash in 1942. His wife was Princess Marina and he was the father of the current Duke of Kent.

How interesting. I feel so ignorant about my own Royals. What a confusing way of using their names. I totally would not have thought that the late queen's father did bad things though. He stuttered and seemed studious and no hell raiser. He left that to the others.

The then Prince ALBERT, Duke of York, when his brother abdicated, was strongly advised that, he should minimise his subjects distress, by using his late father's name, George, as his reginal name, to make the royal transition easier. Poor Bertie wasn't expected to be a very good King...

About the hotel living situation. This would be much different than yours. They were in a suite of rooms. Imagine if you spent your summer in a penthouse suit with every amenity and the cash to do whatever you wanted. Full on concierge room service. Dining in swanky upscale restaurants. Full staff. The works. They were not suffering.

I didn’t know that it the the Queen Elizabeth then who was at the forefront of exiling the couple. Was this decided just after he stepped down before the coronation? I know she was bitter about his abdication bc she felt that the responsibility put on her own Husband would be too much for him. He was a gentle soul. As it happened WWII was just around the corner, snd it was definitely a strain. He smoked a lot for his nerves, and it was the main reason for his untimely death. I’m surprised that his dr didn’t tell Elizabeth that her father was going down hill fast. Was this exile open and definite, passed by the government? If so, when?

...something I have realized as I grew older is that around the world, members of royal families and prominent politicians have a proclivity of carrying on with or marrying women that have questionable pasts (i.e. basically had been sex workers at one time). As a child I had seen these women through the media lens as graceful, poised, moral, elegant, and high classed - but in actuality it's a complete eliza doolittle moment for many of these women when you start looking into their lives. I just read that after Wallis' death, her jewels went up for auction - at that time it was found that several pieces of jewelry for sale had actually been claimed as stolen in London in 1946 - so David and Wallis participated in insurance fraud as she never again wore the jewels in public after collection of insurance claim funds.

As I have gotten older my instant criticism of immoral young women who have turned to prostitution. We don’t know the backgrounds they have it why they may have turned to what we consider a degrading and dangerous way to make a living. Drugs snd alcohol addiction can destroy natural inhibition. You don’t know what they experienced growing up. If you criticize the women who end up in these situations, shouldn’t you criticize the men who partake of the way they use these women?. Poverty and drug addiction can lead people to do all sorts of things we find repugnant. Desperation and despair can drive people in many bad directions. I do think the extremely wealthy people who jet set around the world, doing frugs on huge yachts or mansions. M… there is definitely an element of that. The poor may be more prime to the same thing. They have nothing to lose. The middle class who are doing all they can to work hard, keep up a house, and do their best for their children… they don’t have time to be indiscreet! And possibly their mores are more ingrained within their culture. With social media news spreading like crazy, most of us somewhere in the middle class are more apt to stick to the rules. I think if Catherine, Princess if Wales snd what a wonderful job they did with their 3 children, and then down to their grandchildren. Their hime was full of warmth and love. Their children were taught to be their best selves. They also created an enormous company with huge profits, which enabled them to educate their children at the finest in the UK. I am in awe of them. Covid took their children’s party pieces down and they have had to sell out. They created their own destiny, and gave their children self confidence, a love of the outdoors, and the importance of Family. We should all be so lucky to have a solid foundation like that growing up. I think that may have been part of William’s enchantment with Catherine.

Regarding the bit about their neighbor, the one who retrieved the blackmail letters for his brother George … remember, all the royal children had other names before they got a title. The “George” in this instance is their youngest brother - a playboy who I think was later killed in an air fight during WWIi. Duke of Windsor’s younger brother who became King George VI was actually named Albert and called Bertie in the family. Let’s not blacken that poor, decent man’s reputation with the blackmail letters of their youngest brother who was really named George. (These family names do make for a real jumble though, don’t they? 😂 )

This is how David had money. Remember he was the Prince of Wales and as such got all the revenues from the Duchy of Cornwall for years and he kept all of it for himself and he wasn’t taxed on it, and did not go towards any expenses, so he squirreled all that away and hid that amount from his brother when he abdicated. Also, as king, he owned Sandringham and Balmoral outright as those are not Crown Estates and the new King had to BUY these from him and the King was obligated to pay David back in installments. So he had LOTS of 💰.. The parallels between these two pathetic Windsors and the whingeing Sussexes is just eerie..

But, when he began seeing Camila seriously after the divorce, he would phone her husband would answer and just hand over the phone like, ‘it’s him’. And she’d go into the other room to chat as long as Charles wanted to. That went on until the ‘tampon’ scandal when her husband had to divorce her from embarrassment. Charles could have whatever he wanted. And her husband had to go along. That’s how it works with royalty even now.

Diana was not an innocent wallflower; she wanted to be Queen one day. She grew up reading Barbara Cartland's Regency romances (like the books the Bridgertons Netflix series are based upon). Cartland was Diana's step-grandmother. They wanted an illustrious match for the Spencer girl; that's how it was in those circles in those days. So stop believing that Diana was NOT complicit in snaring her real life Prince!! She could've settled for a lesser rank, bit she aimed for the most eligible bachelor in the world & got him! The rest is history....

The little girl's pearl necklace story sounds typical - I'll be Wallis would take a dim view of letting any jewellery escape. What was shocking to me was how un-kingly and un-noble it was. You'd expect a king (or king-to-be) to have a feeling of loftiness. This was petty - snatching goodies from a child. But he was a petty person. I think a lot of people didn't want to believe that; they were invested in the idea of kingship and wouldn't admit that David was just a bum who happened to be born in cushy circumstances.

I’ve never known a man who was into “Miniatures”. Women, yes, we are always charmed by doll house furniture, Hallmark Christmas ornaments and even the little McDonald toys but Men - Not so much!
@MeItsMeLol
@MeItsMeLol 18 күн бұрын
I think it depends upon how you define “miniature”, if you believe that a miniature means porcelain figurines of ladies in fancy dress, then yeah collecting miniatures is more common among women. But since miniature means something reproduced in a smaller scale than in real life, model railroads are miniatures and are far more collected by men than women. Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are miniatures, Star Wars action figures are miniatures, and so are collections of tin soldiers, and all are generally more popular with men than women. So I disagree with you, men collect miniatures equally or nearly just as much as women because something being smaller than in real life does not describe a gender, it describes a size.

Lady Frieda was expecting her daughter to have a pearl necklace with with around 20 pearls from David (though easily fewer, depending how old she was when the custom started) after he'd given her one per year on her birthday till she grew up? LOl.. I hope they were very LARGE pearls. As entertaining and easy to listen to as you are, you must be a GREAT school teacher. A long, long time ago when I was in school, if a teacher was entertaining my attention was captured. Alas, there weren't many like that in my schools, it was also pre-ritalin et. al.. Most often my thoughts flew out the window after the first five minutes, no matter how hard I tried to restrain them from doing that.

I always wondered if David and/or Wallis knew they would be in exile. They can’t go back to England! I wondered about children for the too. I’m not surprised that he was bisexual . Wallis grew up in Baltimore. She was with the 2 older women. Aunt Bess and other. I think she simply determined she wanted more. Not as crass as Meghan Markle but a similar situation. I have not read her biography for years. Probably should read it again. There certainly are a lot of bi-sexual or Gay. Oscar Wilde was pretty racy and coarse, but in the salon set in London. My life feels so Boringly upper middle class. Unsure how they determine economic class.

Here's the thing though. Wallis was still married when she started the affair with David. David concocted the plan to marry Wallis when she was still married. To be honest, I can see why the powers that be were like, no, we will not countenance you marrying a divorced a woman when you are the one who engineered her divorce to suit yourself. Shades of another King David and Uriah the Hittite.

I don't think it was about him doing the right thing by wanting to marry her. He was the head of the church of England & she was a divorcee. The church of England would never recognize the marriage b/c of her divorces. So he would then be bringing his mistress out into the public a his queen. The church could not allow it! I haven't had time to read this book yet, but does it talk about how parliament walked out on him? Had he not abdicated, he would have thrown England into chaos as a king without a government?

No the brother being blackmailed was the youngest brother George, King George didn't take that name until he became King. Kind of confusing. As for Thelma Furness, she was the Maternal Aunt of Gloria Vanderbilt, Great Aunt of Anderson Cooper. There are so many stories about David's sexual conquests, when he was Prince of Wales, instead of greeting the hostess who was throwing a party for him, he instead was too busy carrying out the seduction of a local official's wife. When he received word that his father was sick and possibly dying, David shrugged and went on to spend the night and most of the day in bed, again, with someone else's wife. I've never heard the bisexual angle but considering that he and his youngest brother George (Not King George VI) ran with a crowd who slept with whatever and whoever struck their fancy, and who all indulged in rampant drug use, I guess it's possible. Prince George, actually went through detox with David there with him taking care of him. King George V, actually commended David for his loyalty to his family. David is a very confusing figure, because you're never 100% certain what his motives were for doing the things he did, both good and bad.

……Andrew Lownie’s book was SO good I bought my own copy after reading the one from the Library. The D o W had arrested development set at age 13. He was a very stupid man, BUT like the current ginger dipstick, he was extremely dangerous. Allegedly, he leaked the Allies’ plan for battle tactics’ against Germany, in France. If all was right, & proper in the world of justice, he should’ve been court-martialed for treason, found guilty of course, & shot by firing squad. But he was ‘protected’ by several high-up people, unfortunately. His removal from the British Throne was orchestrated by the A of C Cosmo Lang, the PM Stanley Baldwin, & the-then P of York, the former Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She was a narcissist, & hated Edward because he spurned her when they were younger. She set her cap at him because she wanted to be the Queen. She got the ‘spare’ instead, but still became Queen. To find out how horrible she was, read book, ‘The Queen Mother’ by Lady Colin Campbell. It’s more than an eye-opener into her horrid nature………
