The Mousekateers appeared in public for the first time, on the day of Disneyland's opening, on July 17th, 1955..while this appearance was televised in black and white, Disney had the rehearsals filmed in COLOR.. so, here are the Mouskateers, as they appeared on TV, in black and white, the color rehearsal sections are edited in..this is pretty terrific..great memories for all of us who were kids in the mid '50's ~

I was born Nov.14th,1954. Among my earliest TV memories are seeing the Mouseketeers dancing. The Mickey Mouse Club had to have been the first show my Mom turned on to keep me quiet for an hour.(Chuckle!) My earliest Little Golden Books included Mickey Mouse's Picnic.

Opening day 1955. I was three. I have good memories of the MMC tv show. I lived in SoCal briefly in the early 1960’s. We went to Disneyland in late 1963 and, again, in early 1964. Dad shot many color slides. I still have them. Those memories are precious. Thanks for the video. From an old man in Minnesota.

Amazing color for 1955. Looks like it was filmed only yesterday, except, of course, for the long-outdated hair and clothing styles. Thanks for posting this!

Color film was perfected by the 1950s. This was most likely shot on 16mm Kodachrome, which had reached a level of perfection by this time. You might want to look at the development of color motion pictures previous to 1955 to be amazed at color for "its time.". As for the "long-outdated hair and clothing styles, these films serve as documentations of that era and also stand as examples of good taste and tailoring, which is not a common today.
@teletubetodd
@teletubetodd 9 жыл бұрын
Good points, Ray. The color perfection of 1950s and just-after-1950s films like "West Side Story" and Hitchcock's "Rear Window" attest to your statement. And, yes, good taste and tailoring are sorely lacking today, given how grungy people dress in general, even when going to church or showing up for jury duty.
@RayPointerChannel
@RayPointerChannel 9 жыл бұрын
The theatrical films you mention are an entirely different issue based on advancements in Technicolor printing combined with the new Eastmancolor negative film. This is 35mm technology that you refer to. The Disney footage appears to be 16mm Kodachrome, which was a Color Reversal stock for amateur use not requiring negatives for prints.

It seems simple enough to me. This video was put together by editing. The rehearsals were shot in color, but were NOT complete. B&W footage filled in from the LIVE performance. What is so unique about this event is that there were so many Mousekateers. The MMC club at the time was so new, even they wont quite sure how it would actually work out.

WOW! Half of those Mouskateers did not make it, but if memory serves me right, the kids were put into color coded casts, like, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow. I think the Red made the Mouskateer roll call. When I worked at WDW as a French Language Interpreter, I met some of the Mouskateers Lisa, Julie, Pop, Minday, and scott, then the update version of the Mouskateers...I was born in October 27 1955. So Disneyland and I are the same age! A very young 60! :)

Saw a few 'Kee-teers' that didn't make the cut, Bronson, Paul, Lee, and some of the girls as well. You can hear that the kids got ahead of or the band track got behind the vocals at times likely due to the lack of monitor speakers.This was from the Disneyland opening, the whole of which can be seen elsewhere on YT.A technical miracle for 1955 live TV, which was produced and broadcast LIVE relatively flawlessly over the infant ABC TV network who put up the money to build Disneyland in exchange for prodigious program product from the Disney Studio throughout the 1950's.As for the color rehearsal segments, Walt always shot on Kodachrome film rather than the usual other processes and Disney color productions of that era always look great. While color TV did exist in 1954, it was the initially exclusive domain of NBC by way of their ownership by RCA who developed a practical compatible color system that could be viewed in color on a color set or in monochrome on a black and white television set. ABC, always cash strapped until the later 1970's, would not go to full color programming until the late 1960's, the last of the three networks to do so .
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 6 жыл бұрын
By 1960, Walt was furious that a) ABC really wasn't developing any plans for color telecasts because they were "cash poor", and b) they continued to insist he produce more Western segments for his weekly series [about half of the episodes he produced under the "WALT DISNEY PRESENTS" banner from 1958 through '61 were Westerns, including "The NIne Lives of Elfego Baca", "Texas Jim Slaughter", and "early American" adventures like "The Swamp Fox", the four "Zorro" hours during the final season, and his version of "Daniel Boone"]. The network wanted his show to be more "compatible" with the other Western series they loaded on their schedule by 1960. When they finally moved him to Sunday nights at 6:30pm(et) that fall, just before "MAVERICK", that was the "deal breaker" as far as Disney was concerned. He privately met with NBC executives to discuss a new contract with them, and insisted to his brother Roy that he settle ABC's financial arrangements and concession arrangements concerning the Disneyland park [they accepted $7 million dollars for Walt to "buy their share out"].....and Walt was free by the end of the season to move to another network.

One holdback to the use of color at that time was that ABC (the network that MMC aired) was the most color-resistant of the three networks, perhaps since ABC was ranked dead last in ratings and number of TV stations. Besides that, very few TV stations at that time aired in color at all. NBC was the most innovative of the three networks, having aired a few color programs almost since the very beginning! This was due to the fact that RCA owned NBC, and used color programs as a way to sell color TV sets, which were very expensive at that time. In fact, Howdy Doody began airing in color permanently in the Fall of 1955 (the show had tested color for one episode in 1953 and a full week in 1954).

CBS was actually network the most resistant to color. After RCA’s color broadcasting standard was adopted by the FCC instead of CBS, CBS slowed down its color efforts. It did not have any regularly scheduled color series until the fall of 1965. NBC was the leader, but ABC had some select color series earlier than 1965, such as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Wagon Train.

Roy, ALL of the kids in this video WERE on The Mickey Mouse Club, at least for the first 6 months; because that was the length of the standard contract most were given. A few were fired after a few weeks on the show (for instance, Paul Peterson.) Others lasted a few months..but everyone of these kids were actually on the show, at least for a short timeline. While it is true that the people at the MMC divided the kids into color coded teams, the Red team were on the show most often..the kids on the other teams were usually used for background crowd scenes. Very few of the kids on those teams were promoted to the Red team..for instance - Cheryl Holdrige..a 2d year addition to the Mouseketeers. There were only 39 kids who were officially Original Mouseketeers..but only 9 of them were on for the complete run of the series.

Bobby Burgess is a great dancer but here he seems like he must have ate about 10 candy bars just before performing here judging by his hyper exaggerated movements.

One thing was odd, they had two Marys in the "roll call" (see 2:45 to 2:47). Could they have two Mouseketeers with the same first name?
@piacabanero1129
@piacabanero1129 5 жыл бұрын
The Marys were quite distinctive - Espinosa (2:47) was short and acrobatic; Sartori (2:45) was tall and confident. Ironically, there were two Johns in that season (Johhny Crawford and John Lee Johann), but the latter was called Lee to not confuse the two.

I never got "Roy". Why was he there ? He looked like a big, fat disciplinarian for the Musketeers. Hie presence always bothered me.
@piacabanero1129
@piacabanero1129 5 жыл бұрын
Roy was there for two reasons - to fulfill a requirement that there had to be adults in the cast since having kids run the show themselves wasn't a thing at that time, and he was specifically chosen because of his drawing skills and the fact he was huge and jolly, the latter complimenting with the other elements of the show.

Hi Maureen, well; this is the REHEARSAL for opening Day of Disneyland, in July of 1955..showcasing the Mouseketeers.. I can't say where Cubby and Karen are, but they were present on the Opening Day tv show LIVE in 1955. I remember seeing the them on tv that day..

A little off for me. I would have slowed the action down a bit. Everyone Moving way too fast. I would have put more direction into grace of movement. I also think Annette needed to be first, out in front and given more air time. Instead of a big goofy looking guy I would have replaced him with a gorgeous young woman.

What a pity that Walt Disney never allowed black children to be Mouseketeers, what a good and meaningful and profound message that would have sent, what a shame to see such opportunity lost
