The Move That Makes Irons And Driver Really Easy!

The movement of the pelvis could easily be defined as the MOST IMPORTANT MOVEMENT IN GOLF. Get it right, and you’re on your way to years of solid ball striking. Get it wrong, however, and a lifetime of golfing misery will follow!
The lateral movement of the pelvis during the downswing and follow-through has been poorly defined in much of the golf instruction world. The term "hip sway" has become a taboo subject for a lot of golf instructors in recent years, with everyone, instead, trying to get OPEN with their lower body. However, this has led to major issues for the majority of golfers, who now find themselves swinging excessive across the ball and unable to control the low-point of their swing.
So should you sway your hips towards the target in the downswing? The answer is YES!
How much? Well the PGA Tour average would see the centre of the pelvis move some 6-8 inches towards the target from the top of the backswing, to the finish of the swing with IRONS and DRIVER.
The majority of you watching this video already know you should be doing this, but 99% of you are not moving your pelvis towards the target FAR ENOUGH or EARLY ENOUGH to take advantage of all the benefits that come from doing so.
If you want to IMPROVE CONTACT, INCREASE DISTANCE and CONTROL YOUR GOLF BALL better than ever before, then start by making sure you are moving your pelvis sufficiently forwards throughout the downswing and follow-through. The drills I'll share in this video will help you find the ideal blend of SWAY and TURN to master this most important move!

I thought the idea of stack and tilt is that you don't have to time weight shift! This certainly changes things in my mind... and maybe explains why, even with stack and tilt, that I struggle with driver!

ROB, A few months ago I saw a video with Tommy Fleetwood who described his swing as rotational but the video shows him leading with his hips. Rotation happening after impact. Another great lesson that could help a lot of swing styles.

Thanks, Jim. As I mention in the video, it’s certainly a “blend” of both pieces, but the majority of golfers would do well to get the sway part in as early as possible in the downswing, then let the turn part kick in.

Rob, great timing on this video! I actually began doing this last week (based on earlier videos of yours). The results were very surprising - irons longer and straight with purer sounding contact. For me, the secret was making a smooth unhurried transition at the top and not rushing the downswing, which gave my hips time to move forward first. So it was a double benefit for me since it forced me to have better tempo coming down from the top of my swing. I live in Metro-Detroit and cannot find a S&T instructor, so you’re my lifeline! Keep them coming and THANK YOU!!!

This explanation is amazing. I have been practicing this at home without a club in a door frame. The distance increase in every club has me completely dumbfounded. Typically my driver distance was 235- 240yds. It’s now 270-275yds. And the strike feels so much better. Thank you so much for posting this.

I have been watching a video of Ben Hogan over and over, the video where he talks about initiating the downswing. As I watched I noticed he look very stacked and tilted. At the top of his backswing his weight appears over his lead leg. He initiates the down swing by moving his left knee and left hip down and toward the target. He shifts about 8 inches laterally. He may be an S&T pioneer.

Excellent content again Rob. As part of the hip movement forward, the lead leg extends and reaches full extension with max weight forward, correct? Also, when building the grid, the hand and club path should be ~20deg inward from the target line? What is the distance between hand path and club path?
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 Ай бұрын
Yes, Brian, around 20 degrees is a good guide. Just place the hand path underneath the hands at set-up, so they are 6-10 inches inside the club path grid.

Absolutely could be. The pelvic sway helps create the right side tilt which is a significant factor in how high you can hit the ball.

This is a great drill and feel. I’ve started practicing this and I have much better ball contact. The problem though for me is that I can shift my hips as recommended, struggle with my upper center catching up too quickly. I can get away with it on shorter clubs, but it’s disaster with driver. Do you have a drill or feel for keeping the upper body centered longer? Thank you.

Hi Michael. You mean your upper body moves too far forwards, or too far backwards?

@@robcheneygolf1 Sorry, my upper body goes too far forward, meaning not enough separation between upper and lower. I’m working on my first move to be pushing my hips towards the target but as I rotate through my upper body catches up too quickly.

Appreciate you taking the time to comment! That's a great question and let's me know you are paying attention... 🤓 at 2:10 in the video, I mention the "down & forward" (crush the can) movement to initiate the downswing. This video is to help those who don't KEEP moving the weight towards the target for LONG ENOUGH throughout the rest of the downswing and follow-through. Maximising the pelvic sway feeling is beneficial for those with this issue. So the stick through the belt loops should stay tilted to the left for the very first part of the downswing (crush the can) before quickly transitioning to the right tilt (hip sway). Hope that helps to clarify the message in this video some amount?
