I think Brendan Fraiser has gotten the closest to any actor at recapturing the Harrison Ford Han Solo/India Jones character's vibe. Competent when he needs to be hilariously unlucky when he's not.

@@cinemappendix1389 What makes you think I'm an atheist? I admit I don't sound like a Biblical literalist or even mainstream Christian but are those the only three positions? Maybe I'm gnostic, a muslim or a buddhist? Or something else entirely, weird assumption that I'm atheist. Just because it's fictional doesn't mean it ignores reality entirely. The sky is still blue, the Nile still runs through Egypt and humans can't fly in the movie. I'm mostly responding to George thinking the Star of David was a connection to Jewish slaves in Egypt. That implied he falsely believes that part of the Bible is accurate. As for bothering me, it doesn't really. I just have a tremendous passion of Egyptian history. The accuracy of holy books really has nothing to do with it. If you read carefully I avoid making any truth claims about the rest of the Bible.

I think the military force that O'Connell & Beni belonged to was the French Foreign Legion, famous for recruiting any person, from any nation, without asking their past military or criminal record. They were typically deployed in the most lethal operations, when troops must be disposable.

It was in fact the French Foreign Legion. The only unrealistic part is that O'Connel is American and he's an officer which is impossible because you have to be a French citizen to be an officer. The other strange thing is that when O'connel takes command, he shouts orders in Spanish, not in French.

@@robertoprestigiacomo253 I've just rechecked some research I've done on the subject. A Georgian Noble in Exile was named Prince Dimitri Amilakhvari, who commanded the 13th DBLE during WW2 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1926 not that long after the Mummy takes place. So Rick as an American possibly could've been commissioned as an officer if he'd served in the legion long enough. His actions and attitude though suggest to me that it's more likely he was an NCO.

The guards cursed Imhotep to deny him going to the afterlife, the afterlife was a big thing in ancient Egypt and to go there you needed the right burial rights. By giving him a cursed burial and mutilating his body they're denying him that, but the book of the dead exists and could bring him back, so this is where the curse comes into play, now no one has an incentive to bring him back to life and achieve redemption (not that he would want it) because raising Imhotep would unleash disaster across the world, and thus no one would knowingly raise him from the dead. The problem is Evie ends up reading the spell accidently, not aware of what it does or the consequences of it.

As is implied later in the film when it is revealed he has scratched a message into the back of the lid of the sarcophagus, Imhotep survived a very long time inside it (others in the film are completely consumed by the scarab beetles in seconds). Imagine Wolverine sealed inside instead being eternally eaten by the beetles until they finally eat faster than his healing factor. Similar situation I think, they used the curse to turn him into a super-powered being to prolong his suffering far, far beyond what a normal human body could tolerate.

Fun fact time: You’re right George, Egypt was at the time a protectorate of the British Empire, but at the start Brendon is in French Foreign Legion gear, meaning that they travelled all the way from French North Africa, across Italian controlled Libya, and into Egypt just to hunt some treasure which... is a thing. All the guns seem to actually be period correct, which is nice. Camels, particularly female camels, are faster over long distances of poor terrain than horses, but don't sprint as well so it depends on a lot of factors which would win. Slapping a bitch is the correct response if George pulls that sh*t on you post-scarab scene. And final fun fact, this is one of the most fun films ever made.

The Mummy is one of the most entertaining popcorn cinema experiences I can remember, not a single boring or badly paced scene from start to finish. The story doesn't try to be clever or anything but it works well enough, the characters are great and the cast is a perfect match for every single role, I think. It's not a movie that you would put on a cult classic top ten list or anything but for a casual movie evening especially with a few friends, you will always have a great time with this one!
@helvete_ingres4717
@helvete_ingres4717 Жыл бұрын
the reason I think it works so well is that it's obviously made by people who love classic cinema. Not just the most obvious influences (the Universal studios horror films and Indiana Jones) but there's some Lawrence of Arabia in there, and a lot of old-fashioned screwball comedy elements in the Fraser/Weisz interactions. The scene that introduces the rachel weisz character where she gets stuck on a ladder and knocks down a ton of bookshelves could have been straight out of a Howard Hawks comedy. Plus some body-horror. Might be blasphemous to say since the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films occupies a much more prestige place in popular regard, but I think it was clearly influenced by the Mummy

@@helvete_ingres4717 I don't think Peter Jackson needed The Mummy to know about classic cinema. He is as much of a film nerd as a LoTR nerd. ;) But other than that I fully agree with you. There are many scenes in the movie that are clearly influenced by classic adventure movies and comedies.

I remember seeing this in the cinema with a large group of friends when it first came out and almost everybody hated it. I was the only one buzzing with excitement afterwards and had seemed to get into the spirit of the whole thing, wanting to see it again. My friends had apparently gone in thinking the film would be a gory horror film, so they came out very disappointed and thought it was terrible, ridiculing me for having enjoyed it and putting a bit of a dampener on my enthusiasm. I couldn't believe it, it was like we had seen two completely different movies. However by the time the sequel came along 2 years later, everyone from that group seemed to have got over their misgivings, some even claiming they had never even hated on the film in the first place, and were perfectly happy to go along with me to see the sequel. Time (and popular opinion) heals all wounds I suppose, haha.

I was going to watch Phantom Menace with family in the cinema late in the day. But earlier I went with friends to watch a movie, We decided on The Mummy for no reason other than the name. I could not stop talking about The Mummy! After Phantom Menace finished I was still talking about The Mummy. Loved it every since.

To answer Simone's question: He was in doubt, that's why. I loved the "I'm a LIBRARIAN!" line. I had a dear aunt who was a librarian. Contrary to stereotype, librarians (especially university librarians)are some of the funniest and most interesting people you'll ever meet. And merciless Trivial Pursuit players!

Fun fact: In the scene where Brendan Frasier is fighting the mummies where he's using the sword, he is actually fighting nothing. They didn't have any stand ins or anything. The mummies where added in later.

Another interesting fact about this movie is that apparently the sandstorm wasn't originally part of thr scene in the desert but the guy playing Benni ad libbed the sand wall line and Stephen Summers decided it needed to be added.

There is a special type of match called a "strike anywhere" match that could be lit off of facial hair like you see in this movie. Most matches will only light off the box nowadays for safety purposes, so matches you have around the house probably won't work.
@markcarpenter6020
@markcarpenter6020 2 жыл бұрын
And early strike anywhere matches were so volatile they could light just by rubbing against each other in the box. By the time I was a teen you couldn't strike them on facial hair but you could light one by flicking it with your thumbnail.

@@rickardroach9075 it's because of the type of phosphorus they use in the heads. White phosphorus will burn beyond easily which is why a small mistake in making the head meant they would light if you just bumped them wrong. Today's matches or "safety matches" are made using mostly red phosphorus though some of the newest ones use green phosphorus.

One of the BEST modern adventure movies! I even love The Mummy Returns, with the weird cg The Rock, if The Mummy was an Allan Quartermain fighting armies movie, The Mummy Returns is SHE where people prepared for Adventures ALSO have to deal with the supernatural even more! So great!

Fun fact: eventhough the story is completely fiction, the characters Imhotep and Ancksunamun are real historical figures. The real Imhotep was believed to be the architect of the stepped pyramid of Saqqara (the oldest pyramid in Egypt) and the real Ancksunamun (should be correctly spelled as "Ankhesenamun") was the wife of the famous pharaoh Tutankhamun.

This came out when I was at art school and one of the main VFX teams came to do several talks and presentations talking about the CG and VFX they used to make it, which still holds up pretty well today. The layers they put into creating the rotting Imhotep stuff was *insane*, and the scene where Brendan Fraser is swinging around that sword taking out all the mummy-priest-dudes was awesome because none of the mummies were actually there, they were just added in post. All and all one of the most enjoyable adventure films to have come out in a long time :)

Oh yeah! Something that is of note - Imhotep thinks Evie is his ex-girlfriend resurrected because he can't see! He took the eyes from the American who needed glasses! Also, it was easier to light matches on any surface before safety matches were more universal

If it helps to know, the reason some of the shots in the movie might look a little odd or have a slightly weird setup (like the shooting the mirror thing) is because this movie came out in 3D in theatres originally! I remember the mirror scene had TONS of depth on screen in 3D and looked amazing, and that's also why there's the kinda goofy shot of the mummy head getting bounced into the lens-- In the theatre, it got a lot of shocked laughs and actually was a rare case of a movie in 3D looking really, really great! :D If you can find a copy in 3D, I definitely recommend watching it if you have any 3D glasses around! :)

I love this movie so much, no matter how inaccurate it is. It got me interested in Egyptology so it will always be a special movie for me. Also Brendan Fraser is one of my favorite actors too, such a good dude. The second one is worth watching too, but it does have some bad Dwayne Johnson CGI, but thankfully it’s not a long scene.

It's funny that this film was originally conceived as a throwback horror film with a low budget and then grew into another blockbuster and still managed to pull it off! The movie still has far more scarier, suspensful moments to it that make it a very unique film that balances its tone of action, comedy, and horror in so many great ways.
