On Christmas Day, 1863, Thomas Midgley and Mary Ann Kershaw, both workers at Fieldens Mill, married at Heptonstall Church. They moved to a house in an area once known as Hanging Ditch, now Longfield Road, in Todmorden.
Initially, seemingly, a good pairing, but a year into their marriage Thomas fell ill, and on January 25th 1865 committed an act that would see him sent to Broadmoor for 38 years charged with murder caused by religious mania!
