That's one of the reasons why I love that the internet now allows creative people to put out their music without having to go through the music industry. People have more control over their craft. There's constantly 'new' releases from popular deceased artists on streaming services, usually consisting of old demos and 'lost' recordings that I can't imagine they *ever* wanted released. I find it incredibly disrespectful that labels are allowed to do this, when they could arguably make just as much or more money by re-releasing content that the artists were aware of and approved of in life.
@syliic9342 жыл бұрын
To be honest a lot of that stuff, especially if the artist isn't the label's cash cow, were denied to see the light of day to begin with. They don't want record leaks bc that can compete with the artist's payouts too. Their lives are nothing but playthings to the music industry
@TakoyakiDonuts2 жыл бұрын
If you go deeper, there’s also a lot of songs that also don’t tend to release that the artist liked, only thing preventing them is the record label. What makes it worse is that the label will still own the rights to all of these songs so it makes a catalog of song for them to release after an artist’s death. Of course this depends on the label but there are a few artists who have confirmed that some of what they feel is their best work hasn’t been released due to their label.

He played a couple of our songs on air and we got a few record deal offers after that from some big labels. We ended up turning them down though because we wouldn't have owned our music that we created or even our name. What was scary was knowing that if we didn't "make it" we would have to pay the label back everything they invested in us. Screw that. We were smart not to sign. I have no regrets. Every contract has a "death clause" in it. If the star should die prematurely then the label gets his entire catalog of music. Not only that, it is a fact that the frequencies used in the music industry induce you to "believe" you like certain music, and you think it is your own volition to "enjoy" such "music". There's even patents for that. Manipulation through electromagnetic and sound frequencies, even with a caveat at the end of the article, mentioning a hazardous potential for misuse.

As a former recording artist in the Seattle music scene, I can testify in the affirmative, to a lot of the information that you are covering, in this excellent piece of work. Also, when I was a young child, my mother owned a small bar/tavern in Southern Illinois, during the '70s. She had a jukebox that she actually owned but that was supplied by a local outfit, rumored to be mafia-owned. She kept asking them to put specific 45's into her jukebox but they wouldn't oblige her. Finally, she confronted the service technician, as to her status. She said, "So, let me get this straight: I own the jukebox but you put the records in, you collect the money, and you give me a small percentage of the money?" The said, "Yes. You are correct. " She said to him, "Take your records, OUT of MY JUKEBOX, AND NEVER COME BACK." The guy just said, "Okay. You aren't going to like what happens next." Less than a year later, her tavern burned to the ground. This shit is REAL.

Britney Spears was placed in a conservatorship by Lou Taylor.. founder of Tri Star Entertainment. when britney was sent away to die in a mental hospital her father made himself beneficiary of her estate and made himself benificiary upon her death, and filed trademarks for her name... She was heavily sedated on lithium and restrained physically. Her own father never told her why she was getting those tests. He put her body through medical exams and thought she didn’t have a right to know why. Like she was dead, like he owned her, like she wasn’t even human. Britney later claimed she was abandoned in the facility for 5 months tied down and only released after her fans heavily protested for her.. As a 65 yr old who grew up in the 70s in Northern NJ among mafia families and having a Newark cop as a Dad, I was very aware of insidious mob practices, including their “interests” in the music scene. One of the reasons many of us subscribed to the underground rock movement and punk scene in the 70s was because of what we believed was its independence from payola and the likes. I wonder 💭if we were just blind and dooped. I haven’t thought about these things in years and years. Your piece is a relevant reminder that, while the names have changed, these practices still occur. There's a level of fakeness in basically everything. You can point to a band like the Sex Pistols. Obviously we know now that they were a manufactured group and fake as hell. They were still incredibly influential to many people who weren't. I read so many stories from bands that saw them perform in their early days that were inspired to go on to start a band because of it. Many punk rock bands that really live what they sing about wouldn't be around if it wasn't for them. The whole idea of kill your idols, never meet your heroes, etc is so deeply intertwined with the culture of punk rock that they can just as easily put them down for it and disown them, strike their names from the book. Even if they had a much bigger impact than say Crass they won't be able to command the same kind of respect for that reason.

As for Omerta, the concept and practice isn't unique to Sicily or the Mob, as the practice exists in many cultures to varying degrees. "Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil", all the way to the loosest version, "Snitches get stitches and end up in ditches." Lastly regarding your original post, was just stating the irony of making Omerta the cornerstone of the organization, when very few follow it when it matters. Usually the ones that take it seriously get thrown under the bus. Wasn't disputing your point, just making a related one I find interesting.

I worked in promotions. It always blew my mind how the 360 deal led to artists straight up not going home with their money from huge, sold out shows, but independent artists could do small clubs and leave with several thousand. Bigger independent artists could leave with 40 or 50 k for one show. But, yeah… Labels have insurance policies on these artists - especially rappers. If they die, the LABEL is getting a huge life insurance payout AND all the streams that follow. Crazy stuff. The music industry is dirty and predatory. It always has been. As an example, Mountain Dew used Bob Ross's face mapped to a lookalike and voice in a deepfake for an ad campaign. They did something that Ross clearly wouldn't have supported, but couldn't have prevented. This whole type of exploitation that hinges on the "you can't say 'no' if you're dead" mentality is utterly disgusting. I experienced the "Music, Death, and Profits" surge in real time, having worked in the music department of a major retailer when MJ passed away. There was this process called a "return scan" to get rid of merchandise that wasn't moving. Just a week or two prior, pretty much all copies of his albums were sent back to the distributor due to not selling. The day after he died, there was a rush of people coming in to the store and asking for his music - and we had nothing to sell except for a few digital cards (nobody wanted those lol) - it took a few days for all the stock to come back in but by that time the rush was over.

I know a guy who has been rapping in Minneapolis since the 90s. He's been in a few regionally successful groups and well known solo career. One of his songs starts out like this. It shows that at all levels there is shady stuff going on and, at least with some people, a focus on partying and drugs. A lot of promoters use the music industry as a front. The drug game funds the underground See, I get paid from promoters that push out pounds You get stoned when you're smoking on the green plants that gets grown in the garden with the heat lamps Show's thrown so I get my little E-vance, rock the microphone free, fresh, and clean, fam Vocal like a total eclipse We do the shows, get the girls, grab the dough and dip

Fantastically done! I remember the year Prince performed under his new name, "The artist(symbol)", and wrote "slave" on his cheek trying to alert those who were unaware of the toxic music industry to his reasoning behind his name change and other behaviors that many were calling him odd for, however he was definitely trying to awaken people to these horrible practices. Of course there are people such as Britney Spears who was a "slave" as well and her family were helping to ensure she was in a lifelong binding contract so that they could continue to freeload off of her and her name. You mentioned not only do artists have to beware of the industry and its practices and connections but also be fearful of their own families. Really great video.

This gives The 27 Club validation. I've always been a firm believer that some musicians are killed for the rights to their library. Sometimes for other reasons, like Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. Happened to be working against paedophile groups and suddenly it's a "narcotics death" or a "suicide". I never bought it.

Great info. Fun fact: before Harvey Weinstein was a sleazy Hollywood producer he was a sleazy rock show promoter in Buffalo NY. As a teen in the 70s, I used to go to shows advertised as "Harvey and Corky presents..." Journey, Van Halen, Montrose, etc. It was rumored back then that he was connected to the mob. Somehow, one of the first shows he put on was Sinatra, when no one had heard of Harvey. How do you present Sinatra for one of your first shows without being connected?

Any industry worth billions has corruption. Music, tech, finance, pharma, film, fashion, arms. Not to mention their influence in politics. The 1 percent at the top of these industries have huge power and control. They will do whatever it takes to both maintain and increase that grip. It's horrible, but happens everywhere unfortunately.

I find it ironic how in a recent video most of them said they hated America while at the same time saying that Cuba is bad economically.

This must be why we see a lot of these artists/entertainers trying to remain relevant well beyond their years of popularity. For example, Madonna is on tour after much botox and a new butt (resembling a diaper), but she's clearly having trouble walking in heels these days. Clearly she's desperate to avoid the ole' death clause. Then there's Britney. She's just dancing around awkwardly on Instagram biding her time after releasing a memoir in late October. It's almost gotten to a point where I can predict something bad is going to happen to some of these folks. Scary and sad.

True. I’ve often wondered why some entertainers haven’t just retired out-to-pasture to enjoy their millions. I think some have enormous egos that just won’t allow them to age-out gracefully. Others are probably owned by contracts that don’t allow for “retirement” as long as there is money to be made. J-Lo is another good example of “your time is up” but she keeps trying to stay relevant.

The music industry has become completely commercialized and all of the artists we have now are just archetypical iterations of some kind of niche. They don't write their own songs, they don't create their own sounds, they don't even create their own personalities. They're simply handed a script to life and the ones who are down with selling out their souls are the ones who get signed and promoted. I think Katy Perry even said it pretty straightforward about how it was like selling your soul to the Devil. Her name isn't even Katy Perry, it's Katheryn Hudson. She used to be some church girl and gospel singer, but she realized she could get fame and fortune by dressing a certain way and singing whatever she was told to sing so that's what she did. None of these people nowadays are any more talented than millions of others around the world, they're just in the right place at the right time and are willing to do exactly what they're told by execs and power brokers from all sorts of industries.

That's not new. It's not 'has become', it's 'has always been'. The most popular people and the most talented people have never been the same. There's some great musicians in all time periods, in all genres and labels, but nostalgia and hindsight makes it look like a new problem
@OgIKidd2 жыл бұрын
That used to be the case, but many labels and DSP's (distributors) find that to be a needless expense in today's music market. What you're referring to is typically labeled "Artist Research & Development" or A&R. Call up a DSP like Orchard to get a distribution deal, and they'll flat out tell you that they won't bother with you unless you're already generating 10,000+ in annual income from your music already. In this era, you basically have to take advantage of all the immediate internet resources to make yourself semi-famous. Then the labels and DSP's gate keep who get's to become the Beyonce's and Drakes of today. But even then, larger artists are even having to leverage tricks and alternative resources to stay afloat. People like Jay-Z saw this, so that's where Tidal and his efforts to get the RIAA certification rules changed regarding streaming back in 2016 comes in. In order to reign supreme, you essentially have to own and/or run a label (Jay-Z [former president of Def Jam], Kanye [Good Music], Pusha-T [president of GOOD Music working under Kanye], Dr. Dre [Aftermath], J. Cole [Dreamville], Drake [OvO], Eminem [Shady Records]), OR own a distribution/streaming outlet or radio station (Eminem [Shade 45], Jay-Z [Tidal], Spotify [is co-owned by all of the major record labels in the industry. By extension all independent artists who use services to distribute their music to Spotify and other streaming sites, are still handing over the majority of their revenue to the mainstream music industry without being signed]). All of that to say, what you're seeing now is largely just the average joe being left to their own devices with abundantly better technology and access to present themselves to the entire world, and anyone who might like them. The average music listener just isn't nearly as difficult to impress as most people pretend they are. In turn the average artist is just a regular person with a passion to just make whatever weird art they desire to, regardless of what anyone thinks of it....
