I think the guy was working as a spy for a foreign government. The car burning and destruction of evidence supports this. The "computer game" could be some spyware he was working on. Meeting his mother before disappearing is a way of saying goodbye. He simply walked into the woods and escaped, probably to some other small town where he changed his identity and continued to live. or fled the country. Maybe he suspected his cover was blown, and the Canadian authorities might have known of this, so the cops did not show much interest in continuing the case and kept it hush-hush. No government wants to get caught with a foreign spy on their land as it would show a lack of national security and loss of face for the government.

As a Calgarian myself, I’ll just add that the police/ RCMP are not *that* lazy. We’re just not used to a lot of crime in Calgary so police don’t know how to handle sine things. However, when they suspect foul play and don’t have an answer, they tend to use random excuses for cover up. They don’t want to tell people that they have little clue about what’s going on. So I think a few people suggesting obliviousness are mistaking pride for laziness. Police have all the time in the world in Calgary, and this wasn’t the case in Vancouver, Canada (where I’m from). That said, the individuals saying it could be drug gang involvement are very likely onto something.
