Beautiful though doesn’t hold a candle to design at Knossos. Murals however, are breathtaking. ❣️

Check out a band called "Daemonia Nymphe" (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7WDi7KEqZ-9fYE.html), I think they are the closest thing to what you are looking for, but, as far as I know, they are sadly unique. However, if you are into black metal, there are many Greek bands with a distinct pagan/ancient Greek feeling: Kawir, Naer Mataron, Macabre Omen, Primal Cult, Melan Selas etc.

Truly fascinating. How sure are you on the throne?
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D 3 жыл бұрын
The mark from the base of the throne is still visible in its place in the ruins. It is known that the Mycenaean palaces and culture were highly influenced by the Minoan ones and have many similarities. So the Mycenaean thrones are usually depicted according to the one actually found in Knossos palace. The original throne of Knossos was made of stone, but since the Palace of Pylos was suddenly destroyed by fire and no stone throne survives, it is thought that the Pylos throne was made of wood.

Are you sure this isn’t the Knossos palace?
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D Жыл бұрын
Mycenaean palaces like this one (the Palace of Nestor) were heavily influenced by the Minoan Palaces, like Knossos. In general Mycenaeans copied many things from the Minoans, including art, architecture and scripture.

any idea why columns went from being top-heavy to bottom-heavy? (Mycenaean > archaic/classical)
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D 2 жыл бұрын
Mycenaean columns were mostly made of wood and supported lightweight structures (made of wood and mudbricks). In archaic times they started making monumental buildings out of stone or marble. For this reason they tried to find ways to make the structure appear more light, graceful and stable. One of these refinements was to create columns with "meiosis" (=thinner towards the top) and "entasis" (=thicker around the 1/3rd of the height).
@MH-ms1dg
@MH-ms1dg 2 жыл бұрын
@@AncientAthens3D does the change in material truly necessitate that specific change in design though? the "capitals" of Mycenaean columns look very much like the bases of later classical columns, as if they really were just flipped upside down didn't the Ancient Egyptians already have entasis and meiosis?
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D 2 жыл бұрын
Correct, the Egyptians already had elements of these refinements. But they also faced similar aesthetic issues since they also built in stone for big monuments much earlier than the Greeks. All the different types of Egyptian columns (around 5 main types) immitate plants or repeat stylistic features of wooden architecture in stone. The Mycenaean capitals might look like inverted ionic bases, but actually have many features of the doric capitals, especially the early archaic ones like those of the first Temple of Hera I, at Paestum (ca 550 BC). Also we should take into account that Greece is a place with many earthquakes and an inverted "meiosis" is not the best solution regarding stability, let alone that most of the columns were consisted of parts (column drums).
@MH-ms1dg
@MH-ms1dg 2 жыл бұрын
@@AncientAthens3D that's fascinating, we can see Egyptian parallels (and possibly precedents) for fluting too (e.g. Temple of Hatshepsut) if inverted meiosis isn't sound, than does this mean the Minoan/Mycenaean top-heavy column design was more cultural than practical? earthquakes were a problem in China too, but the wooden parts of Chinese buildings fit together like 4D puzzles so as to possibly confer greater stability
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D 2 жыл бұрын
I think that as you say the inverted was more of a design for the wooden columns. These were usually fluted with stucco layers, or covered in bronze decorated sheets. Actually, since the inverted meiosis columns were made of wood, no sample survives. We can only see them depicted in frescoes, the stone relief of the Lion Gate at Mycenae and a few others. The famous Minoan columns in the palace of Knossos are all modern cement reconstructions. The (very few) actual stone columns that survive, are without meiosis or refinements at all. Take a look for example at the columns of the Treasury of Atreus from Mycenae, now in the British Museum.
