Wouldn’t Athens be alot more open and spacious due to the architectural style at the time? I’m pretty sure it was illegal to build within certain areas to keep it aesthetically pleasing

The British are worse than the Ottomans who kept the Parthenon as they found it. Instead, the British VANDALISED it STEALING its sculptures to populate their museums because their culture has no artefacts of interest to put in their museums. SHAME British SHAME on you! RETURN THE PARTHENON MARBLES AND OTHER ARTEFACTS YOU STOLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

VANDALS and THIEVES The British vandalised the Parthenon as they vandalised other cultural heritage around the world to populate their museums because they have not much of interest from their own culture.

The mathematics underpinning the Parthenon are incredible. Entasis in the columns and the curvature of all horizontals. The whole thing is structurally a pyramid. Incredibly sophisticated.

How was the interior of the 438BCE Parthenon illuminated ? The “reconstruction” in Nashville, TN uses what appears to be glass panes in the ceiling. Is this an inaccurate architectural license taken in the modern reinterpretation?
@AncientAthens3D
@AncientAthens3D Ай бұрын
Yes, the glass ceiling in the Nashville Parthenon is a modern architectural license which has nothing to do with reality. The original roof of the cella was made of wooden coffers. But actually, there were two fairly large windows by the main door (you can see one of them in this video at 4:18 ) which let some light in. When the Nashville Parthenon replica was constructed, these windows had not been discovered yet (only fragments exist today). But again, these windows are a rare exception, as most of the Greek temples had extremely dark interiors. The interiors were not intended to receive people or worshipers, as for example christian churches do. Their purpose was to house the statue of the deity, offerings and treasures.

Funny how architecture is something that got 'developed' over time. Well, everything was, I guess... Today we understand that all those columns one after the other is something quite boring and uninteresting. The Romans had the arch to make it visually more engaging, the Renaissance had giant orders to break the monothony of the columns (e.g. Michelangelo's Palazzo dei Conservatori). The staircases in this building could be larger and more open, so that people could have views 'while' they were climbing it. The building would also look more interesting which more visual, less hidden staircases. I still like it, but it's interesting to learn about this developments.

Were certain types of shops on the first floor vs. the second floor? For example heavier goods on first and lighter goods more easily transported up the stairs on the second floor? Any other differences in function between the first and second floors? Many thanks for the wonderful animation!

Incredible in the way it brings this highpoint of civilization to life. I was struck by the large number of temples and sanctuaries scattered through the city, more than we are usually aware of, the Erechtheion, the Parthenon, Athena Nike. Many more than I knew about. I hope that I can visit Athens some day. Thanks for this video.

seems pretty inaccurate to me, this video doesn't show anything resembling a slum or a lower-class residential area, all of the domiciles you see are "typical Athenian citizen homes" but not everyone had those, houses with central open courtyards were absolutely *not* the norm for whoever lived in Athens and that applies all over Greece. very limited 3D reconstruction, i'm also unhappy with how every building within the city walls is shown as having a tiled rooftops, when we know for a fact that was not the case. all in all it looks far more like Rome than ancient Athens
