Harry Houdini, one of the most famous magicians in history, died October 31, 1926 from a ruptured appendix. And yet this seemingly mundane cause of death still resulted in an enduring mystery. Had the magician and escape artist, in fact, been murdered? The History Guy recalls the strange circumstances of the death of a legend.

You're thinking of my daughter's birthday. Little deaf baby will nearly be a toddler. I'd mention Alexander Graham Bell however later events make him... An unclear figure socially. Though I'd argue it was enlightened people with basically no hard evidence backing their ideas. Even a century later it was delusion. Though I do believe the state should support IVF to remove disorders like alzheimer's, diabetes, Huntington's disease. Honestly it's 1-3 generations and we can cure those. Checking my wife's blood sugar before bed and constantly thinking her body will kill her is a bit stupid. We are scientifically advanced enough to do this properly.

My son back in 07 while in Iraq, started feeling like crap and his fellow soldiers thought he wanted to get out of going on a mission, so he went, again the next day, felt worse but went. The 3rd day he couldn't take it, went in, had a 105 fever and his appendix had busted, they said if he had waited 1 more day he would have died. They had ti remove a foot of his intestines. He got sent back to the states and he came home for 3 weeks on leave, they let the scar from cutting him open, heal inside out. So each day he had ti clean it. it was nasty.

Houdini set the bar for all magicians that followed.
@bgb702
@bgb702 3 жыл бұрын
I'm inclined think that he was just likely more lame as magicians now. He gained his fame because many people believed him; that facade would be buried by the internet, camera phones and generally higher levels of skepticism today. If Houdini tried to work today I think he would be working kids' birthday parties like modern-day magicians. Modern-day magicians are performers who barely maintain Kayfabe during their act. Imagine if they tried to act serious and defend their act as "magic;" they would be the laughing stock of the internet.
@kenjimac2211
@kenjimac2211 3 жыл бұрын
@@bgb702 , He wasn't a magician of today though. There are still a few of his tricks that they still haven't completely figured out to this day. It was illusion yes, but very brilliant illusion. Every great magician that followed him, mimicked his work and studied his art. So no, I don't agree with your term "Lame". It was an art and he was an artist.
@bgb702
@bgb702 3 жыл бұрын
@@kenjimac2211 I agree he was an artist, he moved the people of the time and made them believe. He was the first one to make a true show out of it that people wanted to see. However some art can stand the test of time, and in my opinion his cannot. Although I think if everyone were pulling out their HD cameras and publishing videos online, all of his tricks would become known and even people in his time would become uninterested. I don't think we're arguing that magic is real or not here. Setting the bar for magicians is like setting the bar for fortune tellers; they're both entertainers who rely on their marks' gullibility and willingness to believe. Fortune tellers have survived and still manage to swindle adults though. Entertainers in other fields such as music, theatre/film, and comedy have managed to boom in popularity as better content distribution methods became available. They're somewhat like pro wrestling in that knowledge delegitimizes the profession. But WWE still sells out arenas all over the world (I don't get it either) meanwhile a magician is a sideshow for which it would be difficult to fill a small theatre with paying customers. I think this is because WWEs content can be entertaining even if it's fake. But a magician is barely more than a man doing tricks we know aren't real and trying to figure out how they did it rather than contemplating their new reality. I know popularity isn't everything but I didn't want to make it about me and why I dislike magicians. I respect them as people but not their profession.

Reportedly, the guy who punched him first asked him whether Houdini believed in the Bible. Houdini was an skeptic about soul's immortality; also, his name was Erik Weisz and he was Jewish. He had built up his abdominal muscles to the point he could take such massive blows. He had to be prepare and flex his muscles. The concept of "fate" is a self delusion that Houdini would never have accepted. The same event can happen to 10 different people and you can get anywhere from one to ten results. Sure, people have been in similar accidents which leave some dead and others alive with little or no injuries. I, myself, have had a number of incidents which should have killed me, but didn't. The only thing that any person is "fated" to do, is to die at some point.

That prediction about Houdini dying before November was a classically vague one. Note that "Madam Marsha" said that Houdini would die before November, but did she mean November of that year? I have a good friend who's a borderline genius and he believes there's secret codes in bible that make predictions. All the predictions are just a vague as Madam Marsha's, of course. He accepts the bible was not written by god, that we can't even identify half the authors and that the contents were brought together centuries after Christs death but he still believes it. Some people seem to be wired to believe no matter what they're presented with. My friend is hyper rational in every other way too so it's just weird to me that in this one thing he believe the most silly of things. This secret code nonsense is basically mathematical astrology. The bible has nearly 800,000 words. I'm pretty sure I could find a secret code or two with an archive that large to work with.

I realize it's not an exciting subject...my father worked for the airlines all my life and I never understood why we went from middle class farmers to stealing grass off the side of the road when the county came and cut to feed our cows...I remeber Frank Lorenzo being involved...thats it. Please enlighten this poor ol Texas boy....

When I was in 5th grade, I did a report on Harry Houdini (a much watered-down version, of course) in which I first learned how a few magician tricks of his were done. Since then, I've always been entertained by stage magicians and more so learning _how_ their tricks are done. I don't recall learning about his death (it was several decades ago, and I've slept numerous times since then), so this was a nice refresher. :)

I have heard three versions covering Harry Houdini's death over 45 years. It's strange how new facts come out with every iteration. It's not so strange how doubts grow to depose the previous set of facts on each iteration.

There's this bio pic of Houdini starring Tony Curtis where the fatal punch is depicted to have happened prior to what would be Houdini's final performance. The puncher approached the magician backstage and asked about the strength of his stomach muscles. Houdini's death will continue to carry an air of mystery.

Interesting video!!! Do not ever recall hearing about Houdini having a broken ankle at the time of this event or that he was laying down. Always read/heard that Houdini was standing up before being punched in the gut area, but was NOT prepared for the punches either. The event was almost always portrayed as a "surprise" series of punches, thus catching Houdini off guard. Everything read/heard about this event all agreed on the appendicitis and that he waited too long to go to a hospital.

This is what I love the most about THG... I'm almost 60, and pride myself on knowing historical facts about History... but this is one that got by me. I never really bothered to learn about Houdini other than the popular myths surrounding him, but I did believe he died in that water tank escape trick. I can't say why now but it never occurred to me to ask the question or to look into Harry Houdini's life and death.(I should read more) This evolved into a untrue historical view it seems are shared by many. Another lesson on trusting media and not history books and scrutinizing its authors. Thank you History Guy for clearing this history up. its something I was always curious about but to lazy to research as there were so many other more important things to read about. This is a lesson for me, as his story seems to be far more reaching then one might imagine. If you think about the modern cultural shifts of the Victorian era and the moral war Surrounding religion vs Darwinism. It gives this story more weight for me then I ever gave it credit for. In fact, as i read into this a bit more, it seems Harry may have been one of the lead characters playing a roll in religious thinking and its popular beliefs through out the 20th century. well, it's a fascinating thought that takes the imagination in all sorts of directions worth the consideration as this generation seems to be deciding what truths deserve to be remembered and which ones popular feeling will be allowed to rewrite.

That was as close to death I've ever been. When I had appendicitis the doctor said it was the size of a baseball, and that if I hadn't come to the ER it might have burst; possibly killing me.

I remember when it was first suggested he be exhumed to test for poison as I live near a museum that has a permanent exhibit on Houdini, it caused quite a stir. Naturally my mother suggested that Houdini never did like staying in small boxes so there was a chance that even if they did dig him up, he might not be there

Love your commentary, one thing though. I did read multiple sources that said on at least one occasion before her death, Houdini's wife stated that she heard what she was almost cartain was a key word that the departed magician had said he would use of proof of the afterlife. A mystery in all sense of the word here.
