In this famous hymn from the Rig Veda, a great rishi (ancient sage) poetically depicts the emergence of the entire universe due to the mysterious and inexplicable power of Maya. Entire hymn recited at 19:35.
According to the non-dual teachings of advaita Vedanta, maya is a creative power that enables non-dual brahman, the underlying reality because of which everything exists, to give rise to the world of duality. The use of this particular word, maya, indicates a mystery that lies beyond the mind (manas), senses (indriyas), and reasoning (buddhi). Maya is said to consist of avarana shakti, the capacity to cover or obscure the underlying reality, and vikshepa shakti, the capacity to project a world of duality when all that truly exists is non-dual brahman.
