The Mystery of Tetris in Ericsson's A1018s firmware

Ericsson phones in the first couple of years of the 2000's often included Tetris. Why did Ericsson then slip Tetris into an older model phone from 1998 and limit the firmware only to Eastern Europe? Exploring the Ericsson A1018s, building a service cable and flashing the firmware into an A1018s.

My first phone as a kid was the Coca-Cola A1018s. At the time it was an extremely affordable way to get a phone, and collecting the tokens only took 2-3 days at school from discarded bottles. It was not jus the startup logo, but also there was a special ringtone it had too.

My own theory about why only Eastern Europe got this firmware is: The phone may have been selling well in Eastern Europe, because of the price decrease that would have happened over the two year life span. Maybe carriers were selling the phones for cheaper than initially. In Eastern Europe not many would have been able to buy the latest and greatest phones. This phone might have been selling better in that region than the rest of Europe, which may have moved onto newer models by then (by 2001 we already had camera phones with colour screens, smaller footprints, smaller antennas, etc). I believe the Polish telecom Era was advertising one of these big boy Ericsson phones back in the day, but I can't remember what year it was (very late 90s I believe).
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle 3 жыл бұрын
I do really like that explanation. It seems like the addition of Tetris would have added some expense to developing that firmware version. Perhaps Ericsson did their sums and decided it was worthwhile for that region. Thanks for sharing.

Camera phones in 2001? Maybe some very first, prohibitely expensive models in the very marginal niche market. Vast majority of new models were still without even the color display that year, and Nokia was launching their latest dct-3 series models even a year or couple after, after which the dct-4 series (with color displays, first without cameras) took over, cameras to soon follow. (I'm not familiar with Ericsson nomenclature, thus quoted the Nokia one but describes the state of the art equally.) Well, while you were a couple of years off track, you still got your theory completely right, a lightweight software upgrade kept its status somewhat "less obsolete" a little longer, enough for the low-income market, while having little demand on higher income markets due to entirely newer models.
@medes5597
@medes5597 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSimoc he's a year or too off but the camera phone was a fast transformation. First mass market camera phone in Europe was Nokia 7650 in mid 2002. By the end of 2003 80 million camera phones had been sold. By March 2004, over two thirds of phones on sale at that point had a camera of some kind. So yeah he's not 100% accurate on the year of 2001 but given this phones long tail of use in Eastern European countries in the early 2000s, he's accurate to the spirit of the times. Stuff was changing pretty quickly.
@lmtythis
@lmtythis Жыл бұрын
@@medes5597 probably to compete with cooler nokia. this ericsson was from an older generation (as you said, it was a fast pace market/tecnological change). As this was still a best seller by its decreasing price, they probably wanted to keep customers pondering the more expensive new generation phones. Its cheap, as "the same" features.

I also have a similar Toshiba laptop I randomly found at flea market and bought because it was too pretty and slim. It had windows XP installed on it but it wasn't activated so only thing I could do was enter in safe mode and run another XP setup from there since there were no other way to boot into a setup because it only had one USB port on board and it couldn't boot from it. I am missing a charger so I used female jumpers since they fit if you remove one of theirs plastic cover around the pin. The current draw sometimes makes the cables get too hot though. I remember using a random 12V LED power supply with the tuning pot turned all the way up to get a voltage close to 15V. Do you perhaps know what type of connector is used there so I can make a proper solution. I also got a ethernet cart and even a wifi cart and tried connecting to Internet. It was problematic since no browsers were available. The lack of modern instructions sets on the CPU limited it even further, more than using 32 bit XP. Wifi did not work for me since it was probably too outdated so security protocol didn't let me connect. It was fun to mess with it. It run AoEII like a champ. Couldn't get any other games on it though.

Hi, can you give me a link to the connector or perhaps its name? Also, have you checked what voltage the battery nibs on the back of the phone give when it's connect to a charger? Mine has a 7.8v rated charger that gives out 8.33v but the nibs read only 4v and can't charge the battery which is rated at 4.8v but gives 5.19v currently. The battery only manages to light the phone for a second and it dies. I wonder where the problem might lie - phone's charging circuit, charger or battery. The phone runs fine when connected to a 5v power supply instead of the battery. Thanks a lot!

just that using usb to ttl rs232 adapters against pretty much anything brings up the problem that when using a normal max232 or 'something simular' the power to that ic goes out at the same time the power to the rest of the target system goes out. the max232 itself is usually just fine with input levels higher than vcc as that is what it does anyway. all day long :P -however- the uart or microcontroller -behind- it, can usually not handle a 5v signal while vcc is 0 (as it's turned off ;) connecting rs232 stuff together directly over ttl is therefore usually not such a bright idea :P (also it won't handle potential differences that well that way ;) stuff that does do that nontheless usually has all kinds of external circuitry (atari sio bus (but that's also because it's some point to multipoint setup, etc)

won't be an issue with a phone. i take it they designed the input circuit so it can cope with it, and esd, and whatnot :P 'microcontrollers' different story.

@@CB3ROB-CyberBunker In cases where there is no other protection, just putting a 220 ohm resistor in line with each data line is enough to prevent damage by limiting current, but it's possible it could still parasite power the system if there is very little power consumption.
@CB3ROB-CyberBunker
@CB3ROB-CyberBunker Жыл бұрын
@@big0bad0brad the problem is not the current. (on most uarts and microcontrollers and other shift registeers). the problem is that the -voltage- may be maximum 0.3v above vcc. if the system is off, and an -external- ttl rs232 source provides a positive voltage. vcc is 0. and this voltage therefore is significantly higher than 0.3v above vcc. it's not just potentially causing the system to 'kinda power up' (more like likely stay in an even worse brown out condition ;) but it's basically just breaking the input pin.
@CB3ROB-CyberBunker

with a fully implemented rs232 port, such as with an icl or max232 or equivalent... ofcourse -that- chip makes sure this does not happen, and it itself is resistant to such things. (and all kinds of other interference and static, which cmos or ttl inputs, usually are not ;)

I never understood why people bought Ericsson phones (at around the year 2000). Typing a short message on an Ericsson phone (in my case T10s) was an unbearably laggy procedure. Nokia phones were responsive, durable and had long battery life. And that weird charging port on Ericssons: It went from wabbly to plastic pin broken. While Nokia's was simple and sturdy.
@JanusCycle

Ericsson phones were better in the 90s, but by 2000 Nokia were really getting it together. I do think Ericsson came back from the brink after partnering with Sony.

There were two types of Ericsson phones: 1. cheap, such as GA328 2. small and then 3. durable, as there were specific models with extra strength and additional features. 1990s Ericsson phones had great reception, but their early user interfaces were very clunky compared to Nokia phones.
@jacobsvideochannel5998
@jacobsvideochannel5998 Жыл бұрын
@@mardus_ee That makes sense. I only got a glimpse at the small ones (flip-style phones). Comparing those to a Nokia 5110 I couldn't understand how Ericsson even managed to exist. Personally though I was and am such a fan of the flip design that I used Ericsson. The edgy design language of the T28 makes it the most beautiful phone ever made for me. For short messaging I used the attachable keyboard, but with the T10s.

It's historical Eastern Europe, as many of these countries were under the communist/socialist yoke. In that sense, Czechia is Eastern Europe, as is Estonia, though Estonia now is politically and culturally Northern Europe, along with Latvia and Lithuania. Then there's the political Eastern Europe, which has not yet integrated with the West, or has chosen not to: Belarus, Serbia, Ukraine (not yet), the Caucasus countries.
