Adam visits Prop Store to take a look at an original stunt pack from The Rocketeer! Not only is this a chance to examine a real prop from the fan-favorite adventure film, the stunt pack here has curious features in its construction that make it unlike the hero prop. Adam helps Prop Store consider how this prop could have been used by production for the film's special effects shots.
Check out the props and costumes at Prop Store here: propstore.com/

There was one all metal pack they made for the scene where Cliff turns it off with a broom handle. It had to withstand the real flames used in that shot. The only other metal ones to be made, to my knowledge, are made by me.

This one looks like it has some holes inside the exhaust nozzles to fit some model rocket engines or something to make fire and/or smoke to trail as the center tube would be used to shoot it into the air. With the different flaps and one nozzle shorter than the other it looks like they grabbed all the parts from developing the props and cobbled them together for that shot, and this one didn't get used. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ft6Ifc6Dyd3Hc6s.html

Also, I make the only zinc arc sprayed packs in the world. Real metal. Exactly as the actual hero packs that were used for the reveal out of the duffel bag and also the infamous bullet hole pack. The sheet metal packS looked similar to the hero and stunt molds but not enough to be shown on screen in full. Only for closeup shots with the flames (chair scene, Malcolm rescue closeup, lindy statue). Your sheet metal packs are a work of art but look into real metal props that were actually shown on screen for what I’m talking about.

Yes! I was thinking while watching this how amazing it is that the industry is now old enough and seen enough advancements in every type of technology that there could legit be an entirely new branch of archaeology dedicated to just film history. I know of several dedicated cinephiles around the Internet who have such a passion for movie and film history that they go around the world to visit and record all kinds of iconic film locations as they exist today and also scour flea markets, yard/garage sales and such near those locations looking for any sort of set pieces or other memorabilia that might have been left behind by the film crews, so a show about film archaeology could be as simple as following them and documenting what they find.

I can shed some light on this!!! They use the pipe as a slot to attach the "flight harness" to. The pack slides over the bar and it was a convenient way to keep the actor upright and give it the illusion that they are not being held by the hip, but the harness is still holding them by the hip.

If the shell is fiberglass, then it’s not from the shot where the pack bounces around the hangar and ends up in the easy chair. Those were made of expanded foam and painted silver. I was there for that shot, and each linear “flight” of the pack was achieved with a high-speed cable, where the buck would explode into foam chunks on impact. They had a whole stack of them. My friend who was a “background actors” (AKA extra) along with with me was able to save and reconstruct one of the foam bucks.

@@guyfecta83 sorry, I don’t have pictures. That was 30 years ago and we have since lost touch. One of the greatest props ever. I do hope when they do the remake/reboot/soft reboot/sequel or whatever it ends up being they keep this design because it's perfect and cannot be improved upon. I'd love to see Adam's version that he tinkers with just to see what kind of changes he's made. And I see they already did that in the pinned video above the comment section so cancel that. This is amazing. I love the Rocketeer. It was one of those movies that came at just the right time for me as a child and I love it to this day. I wish we could have gotten a sequel earlier but I like the concept of who will wear the rocket. Most of the original stars are still around so I truly hope we get a proper passing of the torch. Since it'd need to be rebuilt maybe we find out that Cliff did use it for awhile and now it gets passed on to someone who needs it to make things right in a world that isn't. I may be building it up a bit but when you leave a follow up film for 30 odd years you get some expectations built in. Another great show and tell Adam. I'm so glad we got to see this.

I definitely was thinking along the lines of it having an internal rocket to launch the pack which would make the most sense if you've watched the scene where they initially tested out before putting it on the Lindy statue. It's definitely one of the movies that people either love it or hate it mostly because it was satin such an early time period that most of the audience was too young to remember Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon concepts that were used to inspire the writing if the book.

That could be from the scene when Cliff and Peevy tested the rocket pack on Lucky Lindy or the scene where it took off and flew around inside Bigelow's hanger.
