"The Myth" of Panama's 900 HP Evo - /TUNED

Күн бұрын

It's the rainy season in Panama, and that means if we want to go fast, we're gonna need some AWD performance. Fortunately, we've got the keys to Race Lab's 900 HP Mitsubishi Evolution 7. Now if we can just find somewhere to run it....

@SA77888
@SA77888 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah...........OK, Im not going mad. Lag seems to be, largely, a thing of the past, with dual turbos.......(one small, one large) and more refined engineering. But back in the 80s\90s.........a turbo'd car could be slower than its regularly aspirate counterpart (due to lag) until that turbo '' kicked in '' at 4k revs or whatever, and then you got this HUGE surge of power. Now the power is more consistent throughout the rev range. A lot of turbo cars you dont notice you have a turbo........other than the fact its faster than it otherwise would be.

From the Garrett website FAQ "Boost threshold is the engine speed at which there is sufficient exhaust gas flow to generate positive manifold pressure, or boost." "Turbo lag is the time delay of boost response after the throttle is opened when operating above the boost threshold engine speed. Turbo lag is determined by many factors, including turbo size relative to engine size, the state of tuning of the engine, the inertia of the turbo's rotating group, turbine efficiency, intake plumbing losses, exhaust backpressure, etc." So I guess all you keyboard engineers know more than Garrett about turbochargers.

@warrensmith792 9 жыл бұрын
I've only seen a couple people on the internet call it a boost threshold. Everyone I know calls it lag. "I went with a smaller turbo because it has a lower boost threshold," says no one. "Boost threshold" makes it sounds like the bottom end can only handle X amount of boost.
@Ehal256
@Ehal256 9 жыл бұрын
Boost threshold and lag are two entirely different concepts.
@joakerowns
@joakerowns 9 жыл бұрын
Ehal256 his explanation is wrong lol he still doesn't know what it is.. lag is the time in which it takes the turbo to build up enough pressure to provide boost.. running 50 psi is obviously gonna take a long time.. so the waiting waiting waiting is the lag.

Turbocharger lag ("turbo lag") is the time required to change power output in response to a throttle change, noticed as a hesitation or slowed throttle response when accelerating as compared to a naturally aspirated engine. This is due to the time needed for the exhaust system and turbocharger to generate the required boost The boost threshold of a turbocharger system is the lower bound of the region within which the compressor operates. Below a certain rate of flow, a compressor produces insignificant boost. This limits boost at a particular RPM, regardless of exhaust gas pressure.

I noticed a lot of people bitching about Matt getting Turbo Lag wrong but it's hardly a big deal as most people get it wrong and now he has it right! Most people confuse a high Boost Threshold with Turbo lag including most auto journalists. Turbo lag is NOT what most people think it is. What most people think is Turbo lag is a high Boost Threshold (just as Matt said!) and Turbo lag is something different. Almost everyone who knows the basics of turbocharging gets this wrong but who can blame them when EVERYONE calls Turbo Lag something it's not. Turbo lag is harder to explain but it's usually measured when you're above the boost threshold and making rapid changes to throttle position. You may let off throttle quickly and get right back on it within a second or less, say during a fast turn while correcting. During these fast throttle changes you may still be maintaining a high engine RPM and be above normal boost threshold. Only during these fast throttle changes is Turbo Lag the issue and not when you're pedal to the metal, off the line, waiting the the turbo to initially spool up and build boost. That's the boost threshold, not Turbo Lag. That's what most people confuse. I'm not an expert by any means but I hope that explanation helps anyone who actually reads it. Too many people who barley know the basics of turbocharging are acting like experts and that's the point. Since most people confuse this and almost everyone gets turbo lag wrong, no one knows it's wrong.

noeljf I didn't say Panama -- I didn't specify any country. You think N/A V8's making 900hp are rare? You've never been to the drags, have you? Guys spend $5,000 and have a 1,000hp naturally aspirated monster under the hood, that runs their cars in to the 7 and 8 second ranges.

BloodstainedSinner i go to drags all the time, and rally sprints, nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder... you've obviously never experienced what having lots of boost is like... the v8s are too smooth... where the power delivery on giant turbo'd cars is fun! 3000hp on the street your bound to die if you push it.. so the lancer evolution proves to be the viable option here. if your going to try be a tall poppy go show us your car on drive then

BloodstainedSinner I'm spending a pretty penny on my Subaru to just make some decent HP. I could have built a fast V8 with the money I've invested but I see no point in it since I would just be like the other guys around my area with their Mustangs, Camaros, Transams. Not many Subarus around Nebraska so we are more noticed than the muscle that looks just like the other muscle. Don't get me wrong, I like muscle cars also but I wanted to go a different route and show people the what Imports can be.

As an evo driver and someone from the Caribbean I'm really glad to see you not only finally feature an Evo but one from Central America (which isn't too far off geographically speaking). I'm glad you're showing cars outside of North America. Seeing this vid reminded me of home (Trinidad & Tobago) which also has rhd car and some very impressive builds. And much like Panama there's little room to let such cars out. You've got to love the evo. It's amazing what you can squeeze out of the 4G63 when properly built. I have a dodge stealth RT that I LOVE to drive. Twin turbos on a nice sized v6, it's even all wheel drive. It's a blast reving to red line and dropping my clutch at 7000 rpms and NOT spinning tires lol. The engine was designed with the turbos so there's no blowoff noise, it gets circulated back into the intake. No one takes this thing seriously, they laugh and joke until those turbos kick in lol.

@leepeffers9331
@leepeffers9331 10 жыл бұрын
Anders Kristensen I could, but there's 2 things stopping me. The set up as it is is more efficient, it recycles the blowoff air back into the intake and it's called a stealth, why would I want others to hear those turbos blowing off? I like that it's unassuming. For starters like 95% of people don't even know wtf a stealth is, let alone know how fast it is, or that its twin turbod. The looks on peoples faces when they say stuff like "wow that's way faster than I thought it would be" is music to my ears.

High compression pistons help reduce lag. Depending on the type of turbo they're using, the turbine wheel weight and material can reduce lag as well. There are more factors than size and pressure levels on which lag is dependent.

C.mon! Are you trying to say that the guy pulled out the Evo 7 engine & dropped it in the Evo 8? Do you know the differences of an Evo 7 from an Evo 8? Fenders, quarter panels H-pillars, windshield angle, etc..... are not "bolt-ons"! Ever heard of a "full blown Evo race car? Maybe you're just a "RISER" not a "Tuner". Did you also know that the Evo 8 was released 2 years after the Evo 7 came out, because of the European Standards? The Evo 8 is a more refined engine compared to the Evo 7! Jeesh! Are you a Mitsu club member? Think before you speak, man!

So to butt in on this debate, Firstly that evo is crazy, 50 psi is alot of presure in my country we reffer to atmospheric preasure as bar so 50 psi is 3.4 bar and one bar basically equates to the atmospheric presure you are experiance while reading my post. As far as I understand once a turbo is up to speed (spinned at over 25 000 rpm) the air being forced into the engine doesn't vary much as the turbo doesn't really slow all that much after the blow off. yes people have dump values to make it sound cool, but once you have your engine reving in the effective boost range (where the presure of the exhaust gases spin the turbo's (depenant on size) intake turnbine fast enough to produce the presure that is required my the fuel management system to produce the most power from the fuel to air ratio). Natually ECU's compensate for low presure by supplling less at low revs to meet low psi/bar (very low in turbo engines when not in the "boost range", hence slow performance), and then is waits for preasure to build to inject the correct balance of fuel. So to say that turbo lag is caused by gear changes can be right because you might drop below the boost range in relation to the revs of your car, therefore needing more engine revs to bring the turbo back within the boost range. ie: your car is sluggish below 2500 rpm and above that you feel that sweet boost, slowing to take a corner in 2nd the revs drop to 2000 rpm car is sluggish/ no boost takes time to get to 2500rpm hensse turbo lag same applys to pulling off from stand sill lag untill 2500 rpm : Turbo Lag next turbo boost threshold

Isn't turbo lag the time you are waiting for the exhaust pressure to reach a level to boost turbo or turbos once you have put your foot down? Or have I been living a lie all these years???????

I'm confused. They keep saying Evo 7, but everything screams Evo 8. The spoiler is an 8 and the trunk badge says Evolution VIII. All I see are JDM Evo 8 parts (headlights, tail lights, rear bumper with OEM diffuser, etc). If you have a legit 7, why hide it behind 8 styling? The 7s look better in my opinion too. Between the spoiler, rear and front bumper, the all red tails, that shit is sexy.

I'll add my way of wording it: Turbo lag is the "wait" after flooring it before you get the fun-fun turbo hit (the point when you've hit and passed the "boost threshold" - ie. 4,400RPM's in 4th - as in - you're "in boost"/above 0 PSI/positive pressure) if that makes sense! :)

A Nissan sileighty with over 400hp at the wheels with 20lbs of boost, an old datsun with a buick 455 in it that runs 9's, and a ratrod that has around 700hp. There's a few other nice cars here that you wouldn't expect these towns to have hiding. All homegrown rides.

Dear /Tuned and /Drive: I am a 19yr old student who has been looking to start a build for 3 years now. What I have done so far is get a 93 hatch back Fox body mustang shell. Which I know sounds like a stupid thing to start, I had an idea that I thought would be the ultimate tuner car. As I boy, and all my life in fact I was into cars. Weather it was hot wheels to my dads 03 SVT cobra. Ive always had a deep passion for them. One day in a car book I saw a 88 Mustang Gt, but it was different, It looked nothing like the one my dad owned or what I saw at the mustang round up. It had a body kit that make the car look like something amazing. It featured a tall spoiler inspired by a Superbird, yellow and orange and it just, stuck in my mind forever. When I was 16 I looked around online until one day I saw a body kit, called the Wings West Dominater. It was the picture of the car I saw when I was a boy. after seeing it I started looking into how people made these and what they all did with them. Eventually I came up with the idea of my dream car. I imagine a Mustang 93 Gt hatch back with a WW Dom body kit, mineral gray paint and a Flat black line wrapped around it. Inside the interior would be stripped and only have sound and weather proofing covered in black suede with grey/silver stitching. Two Recaro bucket seats with memory foam ( for my back ) and custom but not too serious sound system. The wheels would be Solid back thick 5 spoke wheels. Wide ones though. a suspension system out of a Boss 302 leguna seca. Not exactly heart set on exhaust but the motor. oh the motor now, I would have a 5.2 from the ford gt or a edelbrock coyote motor. id have the handling down with a more track based suspension but the power to blow away any thing in a 1000 mile radius. I dont know. Ive just wanted to share..

Very cool aspirations. I am nearly double your age, but you sound how I thought when I was your age... you are bringing back some memories.. I know that Dominator kit very well. I have owned many fox body mustangs and now have a built twin turbo 347" 93 Cobra street car with many suspension/brake upgrades along with a 650 rwhp Kenne Bell equipped '04 Mystichrome Cobra with lots of mods. My DD is a modded 300awhp Volvo S60R. I have worked hard for these cars and performed most of the mods myself so work hard at it and you too can realize your dreams!

Defiantly think that you should consider coming to New Zealand. We have such a wide variety of car cultures here such as the jdm scene due to our import laws. Also we have our fair share of v8 (mainly Holdens and fords). Kiwis have such a unique out look of a 'can do attitude' and 'she'll be right' attitude that also goes with our cars. We also have some of the most amazing open roads.
