In a village in the mountains of Sichuan in China, Erchema lives with her sister Zhuoma Lacuo in a community cut off from the world. This remote paradise is her whole life. But next fall she will turn 13 and, according to local tradition, Erchema will become a woman.
She belongs to the Na people, a matriarchal society which does not practice marriage, and where women make all the major decisions. Erchema has been designated as the next head of the family. She will have to cut short her schooling to work in the fields and help feed the family.
But on the other side of the mountains, on the shores of Lake Lugu, her elder sister Lamu has gone against tradition and the family’s wishes. She has married and has a child, whom she is raising with her husband. Lamu will go to any lengths to oppose the clan’s decision and to allow Erchema to continue her education. Will Erchema dare to defy tradition and change her future? The survival of the whole clan hangs on her decision…

But they can always decide to go back, but first, they need to have more options rather than just holding sickles and selling farm products! They can, and we can, decide to leave behind current material life and go live in mountain generation by generation! But, it is selfish to let the fact of lack of education and opportunities force them into farmer and mountain people.

The Na people aren't the only matriarchal society in the world. There are quite a few, just to be clear.

The Na are also not matriarchal, they are matrilineal. In this documentary for example the uncle is the head of the clan. There are several matrilineal societies, however we currently have no anthropological evidence that matriarchal societies ever existed. That said, out of mankind's long history we only know of a fraction of a percent of all societies. It's not impossible for a matriarchal society to exist, we just don't know of any.

I wonder if the teacher would have challenged her in some way if she stated she's wanted to stay and work in the field instead of moving away fora teaching career... It really sounded like that teacher was pushing her belief systems on the class because she would have them repeat what the teacher felt was a good decision to make rather than staying in the mountains and living out their lives. I find it very sad when teachers push their narrative on their class. They're in a state of authority over those children and children are extremely impressionable. In matters such as this, it's best that these children make their decisions when they're older when their brains are more fully developed and can comprehend their consequences of their decisions better.

If this is a matriarchal society, why should the men decide whether or not if the girls should go to school? It's matriarchal because the women do the majority of the work, so matriarchal only when needed...

The Na are matrilineal, not matriarchal. This is just a mistake in the documentary. The uncle is the head of the clan so he has the responsibility to make the choice. The women aren't doing the majority of the work, they are doing the majority of housework at their home and fieldwork for the pigs. In this case the confusion arises because the men don't live with the women. There's tons of shots in the documentary of men working, and obviously they are maintaining their own households too. It's probably worth noting that we have yet to discover a matriarchal society. We have some evidence, sure, but no certainty. As far as we know probably all societies are matriarchal, so when you hear that claim you should be sceptical. We also don't have evidence of any society where women do the majority of work. Typically women are protected and either do light labour like fieldwork or housework. This is taken to the extreme in some societies where women do close to zero labour of any kind. For example in the west it's common for housewives to do just a few hours of cleaning and cooking per day. We don't know of any societies where men stay at home while women work, although it would be an interesting discovery for sure!
