Dave Godin. Reviewer and music journalist for the magazine 'Blues and Soul' Recognising the difference in musical taste between the London and Manchester Soul scenes, coined the phrase 'Northern Soul'. Dave Godin, journalist, activist, arts cinema director; born June 31 1936; died October 15 2004
Roger Eagle, (Juke box Johnson in this video) Was an influential DJ, record collector, club promoter, musical mentor and the founder of 'Erics ' in Liverpool. Roger was born in Oxford. Distantly related to George Bernard Shaw, his mother, Dorothy, edited the Oxford Literary Guide To The British Isles. But like many teenagers in 1950s Britain, Roger was captivated by black American rock 'n' roll and blues. The beat group scene lured him on a weekend motorbike jaunt to Manchester. He stayed, and had his mother send his clothes by post. Roger Eagle, Twisted Wheel DJ. born July 15, 1942; died May 4, 1999.

Great to see footage of Dave Godin speaking about this. Always be grateful for his efforts to keep the music alive as well as his excellent Deep Soul Treasures discs which he oversaw on the Kent label.

When Roger Eagle ran Erics in Liverpool, every Saturday he got the bands to do a Matinee for under 18's. I got to see Joy Division, Stiff Little Fingers, Crass when I was 15. Look back now and see how incredibly generous that was. Much respect to him.

Proto Rave? A lot of the older guys I'd speak to in places like Wigan Pier or Angles in Burnley used to go the the Casino. The rave scene has a lot of parallels to Northern (especially in the North), the all nighters, the chemical enhancement, the music being based on African American music. A lot of the promoters had been involved in both scenes, and some of the clubs had been around long enough to hosts events from both scenes.
