@@broidk8291 Napoleon didn’t believe in Harsh Treaties because he didn’t want their economy to shrink, and the more he got, the better his economy. He did most of this to avoid war with England to prevent them from blockading his supplies, which ultimately led to him losing in 1815

it is CRAZY how 30 minutes KZfaq video is more accurate than a 2.5 hours movie. The director clearly hated Napoleon and did everything to convince the audience of his bias, while Oversimplified shows the true history

Every frame of that film looks like a neo classical painting. Thoroughly entertaining, visually spectacular, and hilariously dark. Yes, it wasn't historically accurate and the script lacked a bit, but psychologically it wins all around - these were Scott's intentions I'm sure. Brilliant entertainment. The violence was awesome. 4/5 stars.

@@christomorphothe script lack a BIT? The storytelling was awful, the message unclear and muddled, it wasn't either a deep or interesting character study, nor an epic and grand historical movie... It failed at everything it tried to do. Even Joaquín Phoenix didn't shine.. great photography and music but.. 3/5

Old bullshit. Actually most of the credit has to go to the prussians who forced Napoleon to use 2/3 of the troops he needed to knock off the british. British just hold the ground and curse the Prussians for not being in the fight ( in fact they WERE fighting, but to far to be seen) Everyone gives credit to the bruts because Wellington was a marketing genious and spend time and money to sell HIS story

And 2000men and 2 ships guarded his island to make sure he doesn't escape. Just HIM, not an entire prison of criminals. Hell i bet most prisons would be a lot easier to escape from. This is some "most wanted" supervillain kinda stuff. Also kinda funny how they decided to drop him off on an island under guard if it would have been a lot easier and way cheaper just to kill him. They knew he would rather die than live on an isolated island besides the guards and guests

After Napoleon's defeat, Tsar Alexander invited him to go to Russia, but Napoleon was offended and refused then. But then, already on the island of St. Helena, he decided to write to Alexander that he thought about their old friendship every day, missed him and would like to come to Russia, but the British did not let him go.

@@shurale123 Napoleon is very controversial even in France: at the same time a dictator spilling blood recklessly for his own ambition, one of the greatest military masterminds that ever lived and, yes, someone who laid the foundations for modern France. His military endeavours were objectively catastrophic (France was smaller and poorer in 1815 than before he seized power), but his attempt to keep the best of both political worlds (royalty and the revolution) was actually quite visionary. That's why the French Republic couldn't completely disown Napoleon. In a nutshell, Napoleon was full of contradictions, lights and shadows. But comparing him to Hitler as Ridley Scott once did is just ludicrous. Either provocative or plain ignorant.

When he realised that he could not escape to America, his choice was surrender to the British--in the hope he could live in the home counties (outside London), or surrender to the Prussians who would have executed him. The British chose to imprison him on Saint Helena, if they had been really spiteful they could of done so on South Georgia (even further south, remoter, more desolate and colder).

Napoleon's last campaign to defend France was legendary. At one point he even sighted the cannons himself like he did during the Italian campaign as a general many years ago. His army was small enough that he could take full command of all his men. EPIC history TV's coverage of this campaign is a masterpiece

Napoleon's story is by far my favourite, he worked to raise himself up the ranks and recived admiriation by his soldiers and by france. He was smart and helped the country of france regain some stability and in my opininon Napoleon is DEFINITELY the greatest military general and i deeply find him a respectable and admireable

Yeah but it was more complicated than that. Napoleon became leader, but he was not the only revolutionary. In fact, it was not even exclusive to the French. So Napoleon had lots of subjects that supported foreign revolutionaires. Causing a ton of issues. So at first they did not have that much beef with Napoleon. That was an issue when he humiliated just about everyone except the British navy

@@samiam1059 so louis 16 was the grandchild of the king Louis 13 who bought the land, Versailles to make a hunting lodge. And that's when France really started to go down. They were already in debt but with the money put into it helped out even more. Louis 16 made Versailles how it is today and his father spent his money on women, parties and alcohol.

To further put into context how influencial he was, the occupation of spain largely weakened the grip that the Vichy had over the latin-american colonies, seeing the opportunity of liberation, Mexico with a lot of other latin american "countries" declared their independence, and fought spain, even in that weakened state, the war was really hard on the independent side, and it took them 11 years to succesfully fight off the Spanish, and take down the Virrey, marking an end on the Virreinato, Napoleon being truly a legend.

I have always found it interesting that it is a "historical debate" as to whether the Wars of the Coalitions were caused by Napoleon, or if he were defending himself against an aggressive Europe. He literally started none of them. Every single one he was, initially, the defender. Yes. He had a habit of pushing _back_ into the countries after their initial attack, and he rarely let go of territory once he took it. However - he did not start the wars. In fact he was quite content to rule over France for a number of years... Before England managed to bribe Prussia and Austria enough. If anyone could be called the aggressor in the Napoleonic Wars? It was England. They spent years throwing the modern equivalent of of tens of billions of pounds at anyone in Europe that would harass or attack France. They funded an entire black market to bypass French borders/laws, and even paid for entire mercenary armies for other nations... as long as they used them against France.

That's true for the first coalition. But not for the other. Napoleon was so strict, harsh and brutal to his defeated nations like Spain or the the German territory that it was only a matter of time until they had to fought back against Napoleon's oppression. Just like WW1 and 2. WW2 became unavoidable because the harsh terms of the treaty of Versailles. Long-term peace and Friendship in Europe was never a possibility with Napoleon's style of ruling.

Came back to this after the new movie and well, the quality difference is just huge... This guy did a much better job at showing what this man was, what he did, and I'd like to highlight the ending montage about the duality of Napoleon. THIS is what the movie should have done, explain (or show) each and every good and bad attribute about Napoleon and then just leave the viewer with one question. What was Napoleon? I truly hope we will get a miniseries about him someday, with the quality that Oversimplified set.

This man's propaganda was surely a thing. Let me tell you about one moment during what we French call "Le vol de l'Aigle" (the Eagle's flight, the return from Elba). One time, he was caught by royalist forces. One of his generals come to the royalists and say : "The Emperor is coming". The royalist leader, Delassart, responds with "I am determined to do my duty, and will arrest you if you don't surrender". Then, the best big balls tough guy of all times marches towards Delassart's forces, alone, and says to his army to stay back and not to shoot. The royalist officers tell their soldiers to shoot, but no one dares. Then, Bonaparte says : "Soldiers from the 5th, I am your Emperor ! Recognize me !" Then he opens his coat and says "If among you there is one soldier who wants to kill his Emperor, here I am!" Then the royalists soldiers scream "Long live the Emperor", and Napoleon has a much bigger force

“Run straight at the enemy. Try not to die” The funny thing is, this pretty much sums up Napoleon’s battle tactics from 1812 onwards. He was advised by his Marshall’s to flank the exposed Russian left at Borodino, but opted for a frontal assault. He threw all his reserves at the allied center at Leipzig and again with the Guard at Waterloo. That’s not to say he didn’t still have flashes of brilliance (6 Days Campaign) but Napoleon’s genius had really been worn down by years of war and the constant need to strategize and come up with ever more ingenious maneuvers, as his enemies learnt from his playbook.

Actually the strategy was more complex than that, it was developed by Roman ruler Fabian during the war with Hannibal and basically meant you avoided large scale battles with your enemy and let him run out of resources while combating smaller and numerous attacks in all directions.

It sounds like Napoleon had ADHD. People who are that hyper usually suffer ADHD. They can't stand being bored for too long. Which helps explain why Napoleon, when he got bored on the island of Elba during his first exile, decided to leave and try his luck one more time with his French Army.

Ehh Ibn Batuta did pretty much the same, if concedely with much less conquering. Traveled all of north africa, anatolia, arabia, near east , india, far east, china, inda again, arabia again north africa, nile river, arabia again - coming home to marocco after 27 years, to get told his mum died 2 weeks prior - and took that as a hint to cross the straits of gibraltar and travel spain, italy, antolia again, north africa again - only to settle down after 35 years and spend another 15 working as a judge and writing down his travels. There are people I´ll never be like.

All things considered I think he did at the end win. If not on the battlefield then in history. Everybody knows his name even if they don't know much else but even most kids know the name Napoleon. The allies who defieded him, nope never heard of them and when we learn their names we are likely to forget them soon after but Napoleon really made himself immortal through history.

A talented general in a profession historically populated largely by fuck ups, regardless of how much propaganda says otherwise, and before factoring in nepotism baked into aristocracy, operating during a time where warfare relied heavily on morale and discipline, and pioneering a sentiment of "nationalism", a concept of loyalty to a nation, which is much stronger than loyalty to an aristocrat.

I mean, it's largely debatable if Napoleon's existence was beneficial or a prejudice for France's history, since, just looking at the results, France ended up in ruin and left the UK to become the global superpower after all of this... But one thing was not debatable at all, Napoleon's military genius. The guy is at the top of history when it comes to generals' talents, right alongside the likes of Julio Cesar, Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan (probably some Chinese warlords too but pardon me if I don't know their names haha). Some random generals of the time couldn't even compare to him and they knew it, which was probably really humiliating but what you gonna do.

@@Marrrrley The coalitions of monarchs were out to destroy Republican France either way. Without Napoleon its pretty likely they'd have succeeded and France would've descended back into monarchies. In the end he didn't win, but given his opposition that's not necessarily surprising.

@@Marrrrley his biggest achievement is not in battle though. a quarter of the world uses Napoleonic code (many amendedments over the two centuries but with much the same) He did a lot for education, economics, science & arts, religion, property rights
