I like the acknowledgement that we all have addictions. I think the narrative that some people are addicts and some people aren't can prevent people from getting help because they are "not addicted yet." We all have addictions. It's just the severity. I also like the acknowledgement that addicts can be very nice, even while in addiction. The idea that addicts all turn crazy on their drug really undermines the fact that it is the system that is interrupted, not the person. Some addicts are very nice indeed, and not being and angry drunk or socially outcast can make it uncomfortable to decide its time to face things you're running from. It can also make it hard to see how the rhythm of addiction could be interrupting your life or other peoples. Very useful thoughts in here! This guy has good takes.

I think this conversation with Dr. Darren Haber is very interesting. I have an elder brother who smoked a lot of cigarets. He was diagnosed with COPD. I also have a friend who drinks. 🙄🤔🤨

My 62 year old sister is currently in hospital near my home. She’s been a heavy drinker for 20 years. She is a beautiful talented person and her decline has been soul destroying to watch. She believes she’s in Florida and that we are all visiting. She believes a woman on her ward - she thinks it’s a hotel - was killed the other night. She believes her daughter is still in school, she’s in America. She’s doubly incontinent and could pass for 90. We are exhausted and it’s like watching a long slow suicide. The hospital are planning on discharging her and the drinking will start again, enabled by another older sister who is also a heavy drinker. We don’t talk any more.

are secret societies... Freemason, Odd Fellows etc.. also a form of addiction?

I think some drug addicts are stealing my stuff. Better call the police again.
