Incredibly moving song...I had the good fortune to spend a semester at USNA as an exchange cadet from West Point, and sang with the USNA glee club during that time--what an honor to join them in singing this beautiful hymn. I cannot imagine how powerful it must feel to those who have known brave sailors and marines lost at sea....who I pray, in their last moments, alone on the vast ocean, found solace as God took their souls up in His hands, safe above the waves, their mission done.

My beloved husband passed away on October 2nd. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy and always requested that the Navy Hymn be sung at his funeral which I had done. It was so unreal that in the early morning hours before I had him transported to the hospital where he died that evening, this song came on our radio being sung by a male soloist. Absolutely amazing. Truly God's Hand at work.

I'm from an old Royal Navy family. This hymn, beautifully sung here, is the most evocative, beautiful & haunting sound I know. I remember my poor Dad singing it in the Tanganyika, before he succumbed to malaria when I was five. He wasn't strong enough to survive the illness, due to injuries in the winter of 1942, when his Royal Navy Corvette was sunk by the Luftwaffe in the North Sea. He & seven others survived from a crew of 68. It caught up with him in Tanganyika. Pictures on my video.

We sang this at my Dad's funeral. He was a WWII Navy veteran; served on Admiral Turner's flagship, was in Okinawa, and, after the war, sailed on the Missouri to the Mediterranean, specifically Turkey with the Ambassador's body. Those boys on that voyage had themselves a Good Friday audience with the Pope; that's the only time in history that a Pope has granted a non-Catholic an audience on Good Friday.

Richard Cunningham thank you for your service. You may say "no thanks necessary" but you have my heartfelt thanks anyway. I remember the kids (and we were kids) I was stationed with during Desert Storm and there are far fewer of them I need to feel sad for leaving behind than you remember. My son is in the recruiting process right now. His father and I are both Navy vets. Nothing like what you went through. I'm proud that he will be a sailor and hopeful that he will be safe. This is a sacred song.
@richardcunningham28409 жыл бұрын
DenaInWyo Thanks for YOUR service. It's a real shame that people have to serve but I guess that's the way the old world turns. For myself, I'm proud of my service as I feel any should be no matter when it is. Now for a little recruiting. After your son finishes service school he could do worse than to volunteer for submarine duty. He'll make a little more money that way and from what I understand they get the best of everything. Tell him good luck!

The tuxedo is the long-established concert attire for classical vocal performers. This is clearly a concert setting, hence the tuxes. I'm sure they would wear uniforms to perform for a military function. There is no liberal conspiracy behind the attire in this video. I'm a musician, a practicing Catholic, and a law student who intends on applying to Navy JAG next year, so I doubt I'm one of the "deranged fascist atheists" you referred to. God bless and Go Navy. Excellent performance, sirs.
