Ersan Ilyasova has a strange history that's apparently been covered up pretty well. However, I was able to find some information that support the conspiracy that Ilyasova faked his identity and lied about his age. Enjoy!
I make all kinds of NBA videos which include trivia, player stories, rankings, conspiracies, mysteries, and 'What If' videos. Make sure to leave a like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

Turkey's peace index is 3.015 while USA is 2.401 so there's not much of a huge difference. The problem with Turkey is with the unstable borders while USA only have 2 borders... If he was in Canada or Scandinavian countries, i would say ok but for USA ? LMAO.

Ilyasov Arsen is from Bukhara, Uzbekistan and he was my classmate and my neighbor, we studied in secondary school #8 of Bukhara and trained basketball at the same school and even participated in 2001 in basketball competition for "Olimpiada Umidlari" (from Uzbek language "Olympic hopes") which was held in Tashkent and we represented our Bukhara school in this competitions and took only 4th place. His real birthday is September 21, 1984.

I am from Turkey and I think the story is like this, he is from Uzbekistan he is a talented basketball player but the sports infrastructure is not good in Uzbekistan so he comes to Turkey, becomes Turkish to play on Turkish national team which is definetely better than Uzbekistan national team. Only thing suspicious is his age cause I thought he was older as well. Becoming Turkish to play on a national sports team occurs rather often in Turkey, especially from neighbour countries or even US. A player previously named Bobby Dixon is the star of the Turkish national basketball team.

Becouse if your family is in danger, its okey to change your name. I mean you can even change your name becouse you dont like it, in turkey you can change surnames if there is a good reason ( and ozbekistan was a hell that time, if you run away they see you as a triator, so they might change it not to get cought). About his age part tho who gives a shit he plays ok :)

As someone who is actually interested in Turkish basketball I know that his parents are from Uzbekistan, there is no denying this. His Turkish is not very fluent, for me to hear him speak Turkish is probably the same as for an American to hear him speak English. Ersan is a typical male first name in Turkey, Ilyas (Elias in English) is also a typical Turkish name. Ova means plain or lowland in Turkish. So both names are Turkish.

I’m Turkish, and I remember hearing this guys name when my husband was watching a basketball game, and he told me that Ersan is Turkish, and I remember giving my husband a weird look because I’m very familiar with last names and I knew that the name ilyasova is Uzbek, also he looks Uzbek too, so I just brushed it off thinking that maybe his mother is Turkish and his father is Uzbek, but he is definitely not a hundred percent Turkish, not with that last name.

problem is that it's not a secret he's originally from uzbekistan. everyone in turkey knows this simply because his surname is not turkey turkish. also any player in any sports can play for any national team regardless of his/her nationality as long as the person did not play for a different national team before. as far as the name change goes that's what people do when they become turkish citizens. off the top of my head brazilian football player marco aurelio became a turkish citizen, changed his name to mehmet aurelio and played for the turkish national football team. there are hundreds of examples for this in every sport. so this is all normal. the only thing i'm unsure of is his age but i'm pretty sure nba teams would do medical tests in order to determine player's ages especially if there's some suspicion involved.

@@Tony-bored-dane age doesn't really matter anyway. Some players fall off faster around 33 some around 40 it doesn't matter. Even if his age is off by 15 years all that matters is his performance in the game.

"Ova" means plain in Turkish. There are lots of places in Turkey ending with "-ova" (Çukurova, Yüksekova, Korukova, Çayırova, Artova). plus place names usually used as surnames in Turkey (u can easily check this fact with a quick facebook search). Maybe İlyasova has Uzbek origin but his name can not be an evidence of true identiy of him.

I played professional basketball in ages of 7 to 16 in Turkey. It is pretty common for big clubs at the time like Ülker or Efes Pilsen to recruit young guys from the Balkans and the Caucasus. We had to play against these giant non Turkish guys who were at least 2-3 years older than us and it was very obvious. So this lowering age thing in youth clubs is more than common in Turkey.

As a 1983 born Turkish, I remember his first years in Turkish club Ulkerspor (Today's Fenerbahce) as the Uzbek wonderkid. Everybody knows Turkish basketball clubs have good scouts in the Balkans and Central Asia as Cedi Osman is one of the best picks from FYROM. It is also known that in all sports a player can only be accepted to the Turkish National team if he/she never played for 1st National Team of another country. According to these, the probability of the Uzbek authorities having chosen him to their national team before he came to Turkey is very likely. And Turkish authorities use this kind of games very often. I also know that Turkey tried to add Zaza Pachulia to national squad back his days in Ulkerspor also.

AndyHoopes, you are right about the last name ending: ova, eva - is for female and this is actually coming from the former Soviet Union times. But what is also interesting is that in Soviet Union, coaches together with management team did falsify the ages of the young sportsmen. It’s really sad, but it’s true. I know a lot of people who’s ages are decreased in their documents only for these purposes.
