Big news! We've collaborated with Netflix to create “Take Two," a brand new series. Today's episode: Is the Happy Ending Over? Watch now on the ‪@NetflixBehindTheStreams‬ KZfaq channel! • The Happy Ending Is Ov... | “Type A” personalities onscreen are often embodied by neurotic women who live in constant conflict between their worries and their life plans, with a frantic energy most people can’t begin to match. From Friends’ Monica Geller, to Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope, to Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Amy Santiago, we frequently see the neurotic Type A grappling with just how much she needs to be in control over every aspect of her life to feel secure. But it’s her struggles-and her relatable fears-that make her feel both complex and familiar. Here’s our Take on what makes the Neurotic Type A Woman tick, and what her journey says about understanding our inner selves.

Honestly, I love this trope. These women are not only ambitious and successful but they usually care *so much* about the people in their lives, often keeping everything and everyone together. Amy Santiago, Monica Geller, and Leslie Knope in particular are some of my favorite characters.

They might have anxious personalities, but at least they serve as positive role models to young girls everywhere that if they put their minds to their goals, they they can achieve ANYTHING! 👏🏾😍💪

I think one really positive aspect that was skimmed over a bit is that Type A's tend to *love* their jobs. Because how many people can say that? Their passion to succeed makes then successful, yes, but it's not empty success, it's genuine fulfillment and pride in doing something they enjoy. It's an underappreciated characteristic, considering how many people feel unsatisfied with their professions.

@PaolaTheTimeLord
@PaolaTheTimeLord 3 жыл бұрын
right and notice how it's usually a narrative for women. i always considered caring as self-respect. you care about your appearance, your value as a person, self-care, etc. it's not bad to care and constantly leveling up for yourself. it has to be for yourself. when it's for others that's when you become miserable. setting healthy expectations for yourself is a good thing. and the lack of expectations for women and it being perceived as a "cool girl" is lack of self-respect. having no self-respect = being desirable to men. having self-respect = high maintenance to men. even the cool girl trope is boxed in having to please men and aren't able to be their own person. you don't see that standard for men. men are treated as individuals who have free will. women aren't.

I've seen theories that Monica's anxiety stems from her parents' blatantly preferring Ross all of their lives, which led to her overcompensating and trying to please people as a result. Also, Amy has several older brothers, so she was possibly trying to get noticed as well! 🧠💜

I hate how this trope has been such a joke. I feel it's just men lauging at the fact that women have to try really hard to earn respect at their jobs and do all the work but still get overshadowed by male coworkers. Amy Santiago is a better cop than Jake Peralta, Hermione is a better witch than Harry Potter, but they portray them as just "trying to hard but just not having that natural talent". I think it's a sexist trope honestly. Miranda priestly or Elle Woods aren't part of the "neurotic" trope because their characters aren't a joke, they are positive portayals of the hardworking women.

H really is trying too hard. she was the classic unbearable grind in the first movie and has been described as 'lonely, but doesn't get how to make friends' Elle woods is deffo neurotic at times - she actually experiences an arc and has moments of self doubt. she's just in here because she's also big on conscientiousness but isn't so mired in neuroticism that it undoes her work. the trope isn't really sexist, rick moranis fits this in a lot of his roles, he just tends to play comedy so the treatment is different

You make a good point, but I wouldn't call Amy a better cop than Jake. Amy, Jake, Rosa, Charles and everyone are equal as cops - they're just _different_ in their approach and skills. If Jake tried it Amy's way, he'd fail. If Amy tried it Rosa's way, she'd fail. (Except for Hitchcock and Scully - those two are just comedically useless, lol.)

*Please talk about close platonic relationships between women and men in film and television!* Examples: Harry and Hermione from HP, Olivia and Elliot from Law and Order, Ellie and Paul from The half of it, etc. How society views these relationships as just a building step for a romantic relationship and somewhat forces us to view them as such to the point we can even start to confuse our own feelings when we're faced with similar situations and believe we're ~in love~ with the other person. This character isn't uniform though. Some are just normal, driven women like Leslie Knope or Amy Santiago. But some others are insufferable, domineering characters who are utterly unbearable in real life (like Rachel Berry from Glee). I've worked with people like the latter in the past - they're not just ambitious winners, they're aggressive and can be very toxic to collaborate with. It's easy to justify being rude af to others if you pretend you're doing it to emulate Monica Geller or something (even though Monica herself is a lovely character). Point is - Rachels and Leslies are in no way the same.

"Stems from an era when women had very little power / control in their lives"..... ohhhhhh the baggaaahhhhge. It's true Type A's are inspiring, I've been called one myself. But They can run themselves ragged. Even Hermione had done this when she was thirteen. And decided to make some sacrifices in her life to prioritize what she felt was most important to her, instead of caring about everything all the time. And whay would Harry and Ron do without Hermione? They'd die. They'd die multiple times a semester. It's healthy to think of your strong traits as just that - your strong traits. And when you do excess of a good thing, it can be bad, for you, for others.

I kinda think you missed the point with Britta and Annie dynamics. They don't exchange their roles, they find their own path and inner true self. Annie gains self-confidence, but she never turns into a Cool Girl. In the Labyrinth episode she's still her type-A self as in many other ones. A confident and Leslie-like. Britta starts revealing her uptight, passionate, caring and idk alive side from the middle of season 1, then she just gets more quirky and loses the role of the carrot for Jeff's development. Which is good. And the reason Jeff never seriously falls for Annie isn't her type. It's first of all her age and the issues he has.
@somethingcooliguess
@somethingcooliguess 3 жыл бұрын
In the episode where they film Abed’s sci-fi movie, I kind of loved that Annie was over-sexualizing herself and Britta was so annoyed. I had to pause and think about it. Annie never expressed feminist views and in fact is pretty traditional. As a feminist, it was confusing to see a highly intelligent, driven woman who does not carry that view. It was nice to see a different combination of traits that still feels true to Annie. And that she has a different view than Britta or else it would seem that the show itself has a bias/view rather than each character.

I always felt that this trope comes from male fantasy as well: a career-driven woman is that way because she is unbalanced and balance often means finding love. Also, the general idea behind this trope is that ambitious women need to "compensate" their ambition with over-the-top personality traits not to be "too much". It's a funny trope, but I' d love to see more single balanced ambitious women who are always fun, not just when they break down or let loose after too many shots.

I mean the amount ofJewish actors in Hollywood is fairly high, so maybe it's a coincidence. As a brown person, I WISH we could have representation, ANY kind, period. Hardly any Latinas, Arabs, Indians, Polynesians, Asians, etc. I've seen beautiful representation of Jewish woman as always fashionable, tough, sexy, but also poised, as well as light-hearted, sometimes driven, sometimes easy-going, sometimes magical, sometimes straight, sometimes gay: Katy Kane as Batwoman, Fran Fine in The Nanny, Ilana Glazer and Abby Jacobson in Broad City, Frances "Baby" Houseman in Dirty Dancing, Cher Horowitz in Clueless, Dharma Finkelstein in Dharma & Greg, Grace Adler in Will & Grace, Beverly Goldberg in The Goldbergs, Willow Rosenberg in Buffy, Midge Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ronit in Disobedience, Rhoda Morgenstern on Rhoda, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl and EVERY other character Barbara Streisand has played. I can go on and on, including male characters. Darling, you're spoiled for choice.
