Toy and Abby went into this The NeverEnding Story Movie Reaction knowing only that the film was a classic and that it featured a dragon.
Within the span of an hour and a half (condensed into about 40 minutes for KZfaq) of recording The NeverEnding Story Movie Reaction they met Atreyu, Bastian, The Childlike Empress, and all of the other amazing characters in this film.
The NeverEnding Story was their first fantasy movie together, but Toy had previously recorded a Highlander Movie Reaction with Hannah, and Abby had recorded a Flight of the Navigator Movie Reaction on her own.

That gross egg and orange juice drink the dad makes at the beginning is actually a hangover cure. It’s a subtle detail that reveals, despite all his talk of getting your head out of the clouds, he’s not coping well either.

Yes, that is Deep Roy, who played an Oompa Loompa in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He's been around a long time and has been part of some amazing projects.

Deep Roy played all of the Oompa Loompas in that movie, except for the bunch of miniature animatronics that were used in the wide shots and some CG ones. All the close up stuff was Deep Roy acting it out multiple times for each position and they used green screen to be able to make the different shots overlap eachother.

I loved seeing their reaction to the notion that Bastion was with Atrayu throughout the entire story, just as others were with him as he ran from the bullies and took refuge in the book store. Because I think that it sort of clicked with them that there were others watching them, as they watched the movie, as Bastion read the story of Atrayu's adventures, adding to The Never Ending Story.

"The Neverending Story" by Limahl is a song that just automatically triggers my nostalgia something fierce. I know it's been in Stranger Things, which I've somehow never seen _yet,_ and I love how it not only fades _out_ at the end but also fades _in_ at the beginning. Meaning it doesn't have an end, at _either_ end... Also, I'm fairly certain that by the typical definition, Limahl is a double one hit wonder in the US -- "Too Shy" by his original band Kajagoogoo was definitely a hit, then they kicked him out and he did this for the movie.

I was a kid when this came out, and I'm pretty sure that I saw it in theatres when it was first released. It was also very popular when it came out on home video. There was a time during the 1980's when you couldn't go to a child's birthday party without the parents putting this movie on for the kids to watch. It was also popular with elementary school teachers, to show their classes as a special treat on the last day before a holiday or something.

Noah Hathaway, who plays Atreyu, in fact, did not have much fun filming this movie as he was severely injured a few times during the process. Early in filming, he was thrown off the horse and fractured a couple of vertebrae. He had to be hospitalized for two months and suffers from backpain to this day. During his fight scene with Gmork, the wolf creature, one of the animatronic animal's claws gouged him in the eye, nearly blinding him. He stated, "It was the weirdest experience of my life."

Great reaction to a true classic. A deeper meaning a lot of people miss is that Fantasia is the world of human imagination so it has no boundaries. All of the creatures and places are from someone's imagination. The "nothing" is when humans start to lose that childhood hope and dreams. They quit imagining fantastical stories because they have to "grow up" and "face reality". The true message of the story is always keep imagining and dreaming you can find a world of beauty in a single petal of a flower. The song is one of my favorites too. I saw this movie in the theater when I was 5 years old. It's so great. It's one of those movies that grows with you. Every time you return to it at a different stage in your life, it gives you something different.

The movie is only half the book. The rest of the book is Bastians wishes and how they influence him. It's a very good book. It can be read like a basic fantasy story but it has a lot of layers about our life and existence that can be analysed upon. I recommend you give it a try. But that's another story...

Every story Bastian finishes spawns three others-and he can’t go back home until he finishes them all. Which is impossible because he can’t stop spawning side quests. This is why the story is Neverending. So SPOILER ALERT Atreyu volunteers to stay behind and finish them all for Bastian so he can go home.

The Neverending Story is an allegory for Bastian's grief. Artax giving in to his sadness and sinking into the swamp. The Spinx's punishing the knight for not recognizing his own worth. Urgl telling Atreyu “It has to hurt if it’s to heal.” It's all about Bastian going through the loss of his mom.

SUCH a good movie! I was too young to see it in theaters but I saw it when they aired it on TV. Soooo many life lessons about grief, sadness, self confidence, the importance of imagination... "It has to hurt if it is to heal" is a lesson we all should remember in our adulthood. Loved it and the reactions 😍

I was born in 1989, so as a kid my older brother grew up when this was released therefore it was standard play in my household, It's a legendary film. Since you mentioned The Dark Crystal at the end, I didn't watch it until I was 18 or 19 spending the night over a girls house who whipped it out and was like "We are watching the dark crystal" and I was like "Okay".

I loved and was scared (and scarred by the horse scene) when this movie came out; but it was years before I knew what he yelled for his mom's name. I watched it a ton of times and could never make out what he was saying until someone else told me what it was. : p

12:25 The scene of Artax dying hits harder for me due to remembering how a girl named Jenny in my 1st grade class in 86 or 87 reacted. She grew up on a farm with a lot of horses and had a major soft spot for them. (Damn I'm already choking up) Anyway, her reaction was heartbreaking, she slid down into her chair and fell over to the floor, sobbing very hard and unresponsive/inconsolable. The teacher had to briefly stop the movie, and she was so devatated that her parents came to pick her up. -- I'm currently 43 and the memory of that cuts deeper, the older I got the more I could understand and empathize with her heart being crushed by the scene. -- She eventually learned the horse didn't actually die in real life and the fictional horse character was revived, and all that. But even other classmates had recently said that Jenny's reaction haunts them when this scene plays. (shaking my head) Well I gotta hand it to the filmakers and Noah Hathaway, speaking at least for myself, its a powerful scene that hits every time.

To explain the opening scene with the orange juice and egg. that was an old hangover cure. Basically the scene is telling us that after the mom died, dad crawled into the bottle. The whole set up is Bastian feeling alone.

I saw this when it was new in the theaters. I loved it. For a lot of the kids of my age at the time, the death of Artex the horse was so traumatic and for many it was our first experience with loss.

The very hard fact about the death of Artax in the book: there the horse could talk with Atreju and told him he wants to die because of the sadness in his heart and that Atreju is protected by the Auryn but not allowed to share this power with him, his horse. So Ateeju knows he could had saved Artax but had to watch him dying (ok, the horse begs him to turn around in his last moments so he had not to see him in his final moments)

Great Reaction! I'd like to recommend the book that this movie is based on, The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It's an amazing read, and way, WAY deeper than what they managed with this movie. The movie also only adapts the first half of the book, and the second covers Bastians adventures within Fantasia itself. I love the book, and recommend it to everyone, especially adults due to the deeper themes of the story that kids doesn't nessecerily pick up on.

The actress that plays the Empress is Tammi Stronach. This was her ONLY movie until this year. 40 years later. She has a new movie coming out next month called “Man and Witch: The dance of 1000 steps”

Great reaction ladies, to one of the most meta movies ever made. 😀 I saw it first on videotape once it hit the video stores, probably in my junior year of high school, 1985. I loved the interconnected stories, and as an equestrian the death of Artax in the Swamps of Sadness (a place I knew all too well in the real world) destroyed me for a little while, so you weren't alone in that reaction, Toy. Falcor was my favorite creature in the movie, as he was almost everyone's. The animatronics were so freaking well done! A friend of mine who is a few years younger than me had made her own Falcor pillow as a teen, designing and sewing it herself. She was an amazing craftswoman even at 14, and it really looked like it was movie merch. She was just frustrated that she couldn't find a way to give it eyelids that could be opened and closed repeatedly, so she had him winking. 😀 She also lived on a farm and owned a horse. Want to guess what the horse was named? Yup, it was Artax. 😀 So while this movie wasn't a huge deal in the theaters, it took on quite the life of its own once it made it to video. My crafty friend and I would hang out and watch a lot of fantasy movies during the summers when we were in high school. This one from 1984, Ladyhawke and Legend from 1985, and then Labyrinth from 1986. 😀 All are well worth a watch!

I was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I had a 📼 with Alice in Wonderland, this movie, Labyrinth, and Legend. I played it till it broke, taped it back together and played it more. It finally got lost in a fire. I made sure to show all of those movies to my siblings.

When my sister and I were kids, she was obsessed with this movie, and because of that, I hated it. But now, as an adult who struggles with severe depression and struggled with nihilism and apathy, it hits different. But I can't help but think, if Sebastian could wish for anything, and he was so deeply affected by his mother's absence, that it was odd his first wish wasn't to bring her back.

It would have been too painful, because eventually he had to leave Fantasia. The luckdragon buzzing the bullies didn’t happen in the real world, only in Fantasia. If he’d manifested his mother, he’d have never left, and his dead body would eventually be found in the school attic after a few weeks when it began to rot. They didn’t want a downer ending at the moment of triumph. Even without the Real Life Ensues ending, a bittersweet scene with his mother would not have caused him to live happily ever after, and that is the proper ending to a child’s fairytale.

Ladies, I am glad you had the chance to check this one out! My childhood was full of NES references. NES was not just Nintendo Entertainment System, but of course the Never Ending story. Check out Legend if you'd like another fantasy film from the same period! Your reactions to Artax and Falcor were beautiful and I was happy to laugh and cry alongside you 2 during this nostalgic journey! A couple of things I wanna tell ya in case you didn't know. 1) Atreyu's name was used for a band name and the age group of fans were largely unaware of the name origin. 2) The name Bastian shouts was his mother's name, but the storm is so loud during that moment it's hard to tell what it is. The name is Moonchild. So yeah, I need a luck dragon or racing snail too! Lol

a technique in movies (especially older ones) named ADR is the act of replacing audio with studio-recorded audio (usually recorded after filming) So that's why the audio sounds dubbed at times. Cause it is!

Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) became a tattoo artist, and has said that the tattoo he's been asked for the most is the Orin (sp?). I can't remember the actor's name, but Bastian was also in Cocoon 1&2 (as well as others). And, I would definitely recommend watching the movies you asked about (or your editor did), although I can't remember what those titles were, right now. 🙄

I love The NeverEnding Story. I use to put this film on after watching Electric Dreams (1984). I enjoy the soundtrack from both films too. Watching you both react to this film put a smile on my face.

This movie and back to the future were recorded on the same VHS tape at a family members house recorded from HBO and I watched them every time I went to there house some of my favorite memories and favorite movies.

If you two are interested in watching The Dark Crystal movie (if you haven't already), I also higly recommend the Netflix series produced by Jim Henson's daughter, The Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance. It's very well done and highly underrated in my opinion. It only has one season, but it really deserves more spotlight than Netflix allowed for it.

The NeverEnding Story is a beloved classic treasured by so many people. Those who grew up in the 80s and 90s have fond memories of this film from their childhood. It has so much imagination, beauty, and emotional depth. This film is based on the German novel of the same name written by Michael Ende in 1979. It was shot primarily in Munich, Germany, making it the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union at the time. Even though Ende worked as a consultant on the film, he was unhappy how it turned out, claiming that it he script was rewritten without his permission and that it deviated too far from the source material. The NeverEnding Story is an adaptation of the first half of Ende’s novel, while elements of the second half are covered in the sequel, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter. The sequel was a critical and financial disappointment as it didn’t capture the same magic of the original film. They intended to make a sequel immediately following the NeverEnding Story, but these plans were delayed after Ende sued the producers and insisted he have a say in any future film based on his work. By the time these legal issues were resolved, the original three child actors had to be recast. Tami Stronach (The Childlike Empress) actually lost her two front teeth before filming, so she was fitting with fake teeth and had to be trained how to speak without any lisps. As Noah Hathaway (Atreyu), he also almost lost an eye during the scene confronting the wolf beast Gmork. One of the beast’s mechanical claws struck him in the face near his eye. The beast was also so heavy that when it lay on top of him, Hathaway lost his breath. The NeverEnding Story was directed by Wolfgang Peterson, who also directed Das Boot (1981), Enemy Mine (1985), In the Line of Fire (1993), Air Force One (1997), The Perfect Storm (2000), and Troy (2004). I know you ladies love action movies, so I would definitely recommend Air Force One. Das Boot is also an iconic film set aboard a German submarine during World War II. I think you should definitely see that one too. I would also recommend Legend (1985), The Goonies (1985), Willow (1988), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), The Sandlot (1993), WALL-E (2008), and Up (2009). 🫶🏻

The Techno/Industrial club I used to go to would end with an unusual, but community specific, song and many a night ended with "Neverending Story." To add a frame of reference, David Bowie's "Magic Dance" from "Labyrinth", Theme from "The Muppet Show", Gene Wilder singing "Pure Imagination" from "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" were also a number of songs we would end the night with.

Fun fact: For the English version of the book the luck dragon's name was changed to Falcor. His name in the German original is Fuchur - you may guess why it was changed. By the way, why don't you give the book a try?

When I was a kid I thought The Nothing was people moving away from reading and not using their imagination anymore, which destroyed the land of myth and fantasy (Fantasia). As an adult I realised this movie is about grief and depression. Once Bastian experiences and works through the fazes of grief, and comes to terms with his mother's loss, he gifts the Empress her name (Moonchild). Then he brings back joy and happiness and lives his life to tge fullest.
