READ THIS: Since I produced this, YA has put a LOT of their changes on hold in light of COVID. These new standards are still holding true for new schools applying for the first time, but YA has paused the requirement for current schools to uplevel or for ERYT's to become ERYT by Feb 2022. We are waiting to see!!

I know it has been over a year since you posted this but it is still very helpful for me! I do want to ask about the "non-contact" aspect. I've found a studio that is with Yoga Alliance and the instructor says that her classes are virtual - everything is done at home (I'm guessing die to C10). Is that considered non-contact? I imagine that this is admissable with Yoga Alliance. But with classes taught through Zoom, would my 200 hours be certifiable if I were to learn with her?
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Great question. Right now, studios are presenting online. These are still considered contact hours. Under the old standards, studios need to present 180 hours, and 20 hours can be homework, outside classes etc. Under new standards, studios need to account for 200 "classroom hours," currently all of which can be online. Now, YA is vague right now (as of 10/10/2020) about how many hours can be livestream versus pre-recorded, but they're supposed to come out with more information this month. Ask your faculty: is the training currently registered with YA? If it is, then you can register with YA. That doesn't mean the training will be good, mind you. Unfortunately - at this time - registration with YA is not synonymous with quality, particularly as the online aspect is unregulated.

With the online hours, does it have to be your material or can you choose a program you like and have then attend that for the anatomy and philosophy?
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Teliah, you could use an external source for the online training. However, make sure that they program you select is really of high educational quality; not all online courses are created alike, and you must still ensure that you assess your students on their integration of the material :) Also, make sure that your viewpoint aligns with that of the outside provider.

Hi Rachel, thank you for the video. So, if I am already certified in 200 hours, I just need to complete an additional certification of 300 hours? Is it possible to split up the 300 hours (provided they are all YA approved)? (for example: Can I take a 100 hr YIN Course, 100 hr Hatha, 100 Ashtanga Course)? Thanks again.
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. You have to take a 300 hour course that is labelled as such. However there are some schools that offer 300 our certifications that do split up their 300 into these kinds of topics. So you may be able to find a school that fits your needs.

To become a registered 500-ERYT, have they changed the standards? I'm in the midst of gaining this certification and I thought that you not only have to teach a certain amount of hours (as Rachel says in the video, 500 hours...which was 1000 hours last time I checked) but you also have to wait TWO YEARS until after your graduation date from the Yoga Alliance certified program. So has this all changed as well?
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Danya, the only change for TEACHERS is that we'll all have to sign a new and improved ethical agreement come February 2020. For teaching hours, it hasn't changed (so far as has been announced, at least): E-RYT 200 ✓ Has at least 1,000 hours of teaching experience since completing training with a RYS 200 and ✓ Has taught for at least two years since completing training with a RYS 200; FOR THE E-RYT 500: ✓ Has at least 2,000 hours of teaching experience since completing training with a RYS 200 or 500. At least 500 of these hours must be taught after completing training with a RYS 300 or 500. ✓ Has taught for at least four years since completing training with a RYS 200 or RYS 500 - SO YES, great catch!!! E-RYT teachers have to teach 2K hours, but 500 have to be AFTER they have completed their 500 hour training.

Things have shifted a lot. Yoga alliance is put on hold all of their up levelling requirements. So you no longer need to upgrade to be a 500 hour yoga teacher, and you no longer need to up level at all right now! Yoga alliance will likely reformulated all of their standards next year to include online delivery. So meanwhile we can all take a deep breath and relax a little bit! However if you did want to up level your school, you can still go ahead and do that.

Hello, If you don’t mind I have just a question. You mentioned YA standards that have not been decided for 300hr & 500hr. I had thought that the 300hr is to be completed later and only after one has completed the 200hr totaling 500hr. Is there also a 500hr to be taken after completing the 200hr & 300hr totaling 1000hrs? In other words; is a RYT500 someone whose completed a 200hr+300hr+500hr(=1000), or does RYT500 refer to someone who has completed a 200hr and a 300hr? Is there such thing as a 500hr course? -and if so, how does a 500hr course differ from taking a 200hr+300hr? Thanks.
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga Жыл бұрын
A 500 hour is a 200 (basic YTT) plus a 300 to make s 500. There is no such thing as 1000 hour. However yoga therapy trainings wind up being 1000 hours I believe!

Hi Lisa, most of the current changes are only impacting schools. For teachers, there is only one change coming up, which is that everyone has to sign onto a higher level of ethical commitment in February. Probably not anything that we would object to :) I'm not sure if they will be more diligent about tracking continuing education hours, but best to keep a record of any con ed courses you take just in case!

Hi ! I just completed a 500h rys teacher's training and wants to apply for the RYT credentials. How can I register my teaching hours ? Do I need to be giving out classes through a yoga alliance certified school for them to count ? I have already been teaching classes at home, in parcs, in places I have been renting,
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! First of all: congratulations! That's awesome. If you go to the site, you can register your teaching hours directly when you apply. No, you don't have to teach at a YA school for them to count. Calculate all your teaching hours (parks, home, rentals etc) and you can input them when you apply. You may need to distinguish between hours you taught after you earned your 200 Hour, and the hours you have taught since earning your 500- hour cert. Track it all! You may return back and apply for "E-RYT" status ("experienced registered yoga teacher) once you've hit the next level of the number of teaching hours you need :)

Akshaya Sivakumar If your school is registered with yoga alliance as a 200 our school, even though it’s 300 hours long, then you can register with yoga alliance under your schools banner. Students that graduate from schools that are not registered with yoga alliance Are not eligible to register. So I’m unclear if your school is registered in it. If your school is registered, then you can absolutely log your personal teaching. Teaching your friends, family, and coworkers count towards your teaching hours :-)

Not sure if you would know the answer to this but would there be able to be group study? Nothing to say homework or self study but a class that's an hour or so long where everyone is is kind of studying together asking questions about material that has already been gone over just kind of clarifying and also kind of biggest playing with the information and personally beginning to understand it. If that makes any sense. It's almost like a class set aside specifically for questions rather than a teacher just going through a lesson plan it's more like the teacher is there to discuss what was already gone over and help everyone understand it and rub their head around it

I just started a teacher training program, but I'm finding some things confusing. We are meeting two weekends per month for 4 months, 6 hours both Sat and Sun, so 96 hours total. The remaining time is supposed to be studying on our own, approximately 4 hours per week. Still doesn't add up to 200 hours, but now after watching your video, it seems that most of these hours should be in person. This training program is recognized by yoga alliance. Am I missing something?
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie, According to YA standards, at least 180 hours should be contact hours (with faculty). However, with the "online exemption" of last year, a lot of schools are putting their teaching materials online - which makes it all a bit wishy washy. Putting stuff online is okay by YA, but candidly, some schools do it well and create meaningful online learning experiences, while others do not. But you're right: regardless you should have at least 180 hours of instructional time and your program may not be giving you all the hours. Yoga Alliance doesn't check up on these requirements; after a school is approved, they assume your school is doing its due diligence (however, not all schools do). If you feel your school isn't holding up its end of the bargain, you may choose to contact YA about the lapse so that they can either 1. kick the school's butt into compliance, 2. potentially facilitate a refund for you, or 3. take away the school's registration. I'm more than happy to chat~ You can book a free coffee chat here if you wish: 10to8.com/book/oemvah-free/402539

deepika pandey Yoga teacher training’s are being granted an exemption right now through December 2020 to offer their entire teacher training online. After that, I’m not sure what they will do. I am so confused: I have seen schools offering a 200hr YTT certification online! (which I was excited to learn). What does it mean? These schools offer their own certification (and not a certification throught the Yoga alliance)? Basically, if want to teach yoga at a gym or in a yoga centre, they wouldn't accept some certification that's not recognized by Yoga Alliance, wouldnt they?
@RachelScottYoga
@RachelScottYoga 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn! most schools are registered with yoga alliance, simply because it's the only standard that's really going around. There are other organizations, but YA is the most widely recognized. However, there are other schools out there that have chosen NOT to register with YA. And they may also offer 200 hour certificates. Really, YA registration is not a clear marker of quality at this point, though that may shift with the more rigorous standards. When I hire teachers, I am interested in the quality of their teaching....less interested in whether their school has chosen to credit with YA. But either way - do your due diligence. Not all schools are equal. Check this out. yogainternational.com/article/view/how-to-choose-a-teacher-training/
