One big problem with the Ambassador Bridge is that it’s more than 2 miles through the city of Windsor to get to the freeway. Lots of big trucks must stop at lots of traffic lights. I can’t wait for the direct freeway connection to the new bridge.

I always did think it’s annoying that it takes so long to get to the freeway from the bridge in Canada; the several traffic lights are especially annoying.

Yes and on the Detroit side is the hardest to find Woodward Ave to go shopping and all that but on the Windsor side it's easier so that's why my bff and I always took the tunal to Detroit

The Gordie Howe Bridge . . . I can't think of a better name for such a fine structure. I met Mr. Howe in the late 80's and the man was pure Class Act.

What was not mentioned was that Canada has already completed the realignment of the 401 highway as far as the EC Roe which means as soon as the bridge is opened truck traffic will have direct access to the bridge and trucks from the US will come straight out of customs onto the 401 highway. The debilitating truck traffic on the streets of Windsor is the biggest reason why the mayor of Windsor told Manny straight up that he would never get permits for his second span of the Ambassador.

Don't forget the actions of the Morouns to buy an entire historic neighborhood in Windsor one property at a time and allow it to fall into disrepair so all the houses had to be demolished. All that just to have the land and to be able to "show" that a double span wouldn't impact local neighborhoods.

Gordie is an icon; tremendously inspirational to many a young man growing up at least here in Michigan we cannot think of a better name to give to an obvious landmark. Gordie was above just being a sports star; yes, he was that, however, also a man one could look up to. The bridge is secondary [no pun intended] to the supernatural-like inspiration of a person, a mere human being, like Gordie. The Babe Ruths, the Mickey Mantle's of this world are entirely appropriate to dream of great families to be of this world of tears. Without Great Men and Women leading our spirits to new highs, our spirits will dwell in the nether world - not a good place to have one's mind immersed in. There's no love there; think about it -- if a soul can't love for life everlasting, what good is it to exist? We exist to love, live to love, love to live. No Love; No Life. Selfishness is no good; let the bridge help Canada | American relations.

Very important project which will bring great benefits to both our countries. Great choice naming it for Gordie Howe, who is greatly admired in Canada and the U.S., (revered in Detroit). Why, though, do some people insist on using the term “Ice Hockey”, especially in the context of a story about a bridge between Canada and the USA, named after Gordie Howe? Gordie Howe played hockey.

People who say “Ice Hockey” are ignorant of the origins of hockey (hint: it was on ice). P.S. Soccer was the original term for what most people outside of North America call football. This info has been lost to the point that most think 'soccer' is the wrong term.

I cannot wait!! Expanding the Ambassador Bridge was never an option despite the many years of obstruction by the Moroun family 🤦‍♀️ The Gordie Howe bridge will provide much easier and direct access to the highway systems, particularly on the Windsor side. It’s clear how badly Canada wanted the new bridge since they were willing to pay for the entire thing in exchange for the toll revenue. Thank you Canada!!! 🥰 Personally, I don’t believe international crossings should be privately owned 🤨 I usually drove up to Port Huron to cross over the Blue Water Bridge into Sarnia. But this bridge will be so much easier and will facilitate greater trade between our 2 countries 🇺🇸 🇨🇦

All for it! The US and Canada can really supply the vast majority of each others day to day needs with relatively similar labor arrangements. Unlike China who can provide needs cheaply mostly by not taking the same care of their workers, stealing intellectual property and huge transportation costs. We really need to lessen the restraint of trade between these two countries as much as possible in order to lower that portion of the economic equation. I lived in Detroit for 5 years, my office actually looked south into Windsor.

I live in Windsor Ontario and go to Detroit really often. I always get stuck in traffic jams, tho the ambassador bridge wouldnt have more lanes and it was getting old in fact. I am happy that we are having a new bridge. In my opinion I think that many people would go to the gordie howe bridge and if the ambassador bridge is left empty I could get to the US faster. Many people around me think that its better if the trucks take the gordie Howe, and cars take the tunnel. The underwater connecting Windsor And Detroit should be repaired as well.

the whole thing is the moruns left the ambassador to fall apart, but the new bridge will take about 90% of the truck traffic so for civilians it should be pretty fast now.. unless the ambassador bridge company decides to just lay off all their bridge attendants and artificially create backups to try to get people pissed at the government when in reality its a company fucking people around

@@butwhytharum the bridge is still in good shape, they should repair it or renovate and leave it there. If not, the gordie Howe would be full and it would be harder to get to Detroit due to traffic, and probably the toll prices might be higher

@@nicklight3290 No it's because Matty Moroun deferred maintenance for years. He didn't give a crap about maintaining the bridge. He was making most of his money from selling duty-free fuel, not bridge tolls. He did just barely enough to keep it from falling down. He bought Michigan Central Station and then let it crumble. Fortunately Ford bought it and is giving it new life. Matty was nothing but a parasite. The good news is he's dead now.

Replacing the Ambassador with new construction and increased capacity is long overdue. And, it should be a public asset managed to optimize trade and traffic flow. Hope it enables needed economic redevelopment on the Detroit side in the process. Thanks to the Canadians for bankrolling an investment should have received at least as much financial support from the American side. Seems the Canadians did not feel as obligated as American politicians to kiss certain well connected a$$e$.

The only traffic lights from Mexico to Toronto on the NAFTA highway are in Windsor where they plug Huron Line and run red lights and block intersections almost every day.

The Ambassador bridge's location is terrible on the Canadian side,it's miles from the major highways and the bridge itself is in terrible shape. It's way to busy and just a headache to cross. If he really wanted to protect his revenue he could've used the millions of dollars spent suing the government to fix his damn bridge, but he doesn't so this loss is completely his fault and us Michiganders and Ontarians welcome this amazing new bridge!

@@FameyFamous Trucks heading west in Michigan will take the Ambassador bridge, those heading south will take the Gordie. Westbound is 2 miles shorter using the Ambassador,,,,a huge savings in fuel to large trucking fleets.

Old Manny was never known for keeping upkeep on the Ambassador Bridge. There are many instances of holes in the floor of the bridge. It is due for a major accident.

My husband is a trucker and I've crossed over the Ambassador Bridge in the transport truck with him more time than I can count. It's bloody scary. You look down and you can see the water....no I don't mean looking over the side. I mean looking straight down thru holes in the deck of the bridge. Someday soon, something terrible is going to happen on that bridge due to a very serious lack of upkeep. That bridge is beyond 'patching'. It needs to be torn down.

Also Manny was a trucking Tycoon. Its the reason he put the pumps on the detroit side. he also said his trucks will never use the new bridge. hence why the city of windor said the will put a by-law in to make only local traphic trucks into the city.

In Norway, there were some construction projects over fjords that were toll but later made free when the bonds were paid off. I used to live near Chicago and they promised this when major portions of the Illinois Toll Road system was built around the city. Is it free now? In the US it never happens.

If I remember correctly only the Canadian government (or at least the Canadian portion of the bridge) will have tolls. As Canada paid a large part of the US portions of the bridge, the tolls will recuperate those expensive.

I beg to differ! A roadway on Long Island was a toll road of 10 cents. The roadway administration attempted to raise the toll to 25 cents. It was discovered that the toll should have been eliminated years ago when the bond was retired. End results, no toll increase and no tolls!

Expanding shipping? Nonsensical. You'd have the trucks off-load their containers at a river port on one side, load onto a ship, cross the Detroit River, off-load at a river port on the other side, and finally load back onto another truck? (Expanding rail makes sense.) 🙂

There is a winter problem with this bridge design and hopefully they are aware and will design the problem out. The problem is the arrangement of the cables. They are concentrated on the center of the towers and they stretch out towards the edges of the lanes. Unlike other bridge designs where the cables do not cross over the lanes, this arrangement creates ice blocks that can crash down and smash into trucks and cars. During the winter, snow and ice form on the cables, as temperature floats above and below freezing, this will cause large pieces to fall off the cable and smash into the traffic below. Is this known by others? Absolutely. There is the same cabling design in Vancouver and lots of cars have had their windows smashed from falling ice. How did they fix it? They came up with a chain loop that wraps around the cable and just let it drop from the top. This clears the ice when it is thin and not likely to hurt people when it drops so they need to do this frequently. Great solution but talk about paying for a maintenance of a design problem.

This looks like a terrific project, and one that I didn’t know about! I lived in Buffalo, NY for 17 years, and while there were some improvements made to the existing structure and to the plazas on both sides, I never got to see the promised companion span to the Peace Bridge connecting Buffalo to Fort Erie, Ontario. I’ve been away for 19 years now, and I don’t recall seeing anything further going on with that project. Do you have any new information about the Peace Bridge twin?

Will the existing Ambassador bridge still continue to operate? I family in Windsor and I live in Detroit. Usually I cross via Tunnel. I use the ambassador bridge when I tend to go into Canada proper. Gordie Howe too far south to service Windsor for me. It will be great for trucks.

The powers that be want it gone, but I think that's short sighted. The Ambassador still has value connecting the two downtowns and as an alternate route should a major accident block up the Gordie Howe for any length of time. Or, heaven forbid, a terrorist attack on the new bridge. Tearing down the Ambassador means that if the Gordie Howe is closed for any length of time truck traffic will have to go about an hour north to cross at Port Huron as trucks can't use the tunnel. They've already had a taste of this when the trucker protests closed down the Ambassador for a bit last year. It will be much worse in the future given how much new traffic the Gordie Howe will carry.

this bridge does not have a pedestrian crossing despite what you saw in this video its direct to highways for truck traffic, and this is very far for pedestrians to access downtown's on either side.

A long overdue project that holds great promise for our two great countries, the USA and Canada. I am curious to know if the bridge design uses metric units, which is the system of weights and measures to which I wish the USA would transition.

No doubt they'd use metric. I too wish the USA would join the rest of the industrialized nations that have used the Metric system for decades. Of course here we have ignorant folks that have no idea how much easier it is...based on 10's. Stationed in Deutschland late 80's was in hog heaven with the Metric system. Thing is here where I retired from healthcare MOST of it was in Metric. For example, we'd use 10 ml/kg body weight for initial ventilator settings (I was a Resp. Therapist). Ironically in Deutschland they used different measurements for blood gases and can't remember what metric it was. Here it is metric, but on our machines across the pond we could get German results though in our USA Hospital in Nurnberg we didn't use that system.

You mistakenly claim there are multiple existing bridges between Michigan and Ontario on the Detroit River. There is just the Ambassador Bridge in terms of bridge crossing points (also the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Detroit Central Railway Tunnel for other crossing methods). Clearly you must be mistakenly counting the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron, MI and Point Edward, ON north of Detroit, but that is on the St. Clair River, not the Detroit River. Obviously I will assume you weren't also counting the International Bridge between Sault Saint Marie, MI and Sault Saint Marie, ON.

I was going to point that out too. The BW Bridge in Port Huron is about 60 miles away. There’s also the hazardous materials ferries on the Detroit River since the bridge and tunnels prohibit haz mat. There’s also been discussions for years about a cable car crossing downtown but it’s never gotten beyond the discussion stage. With the new bridge having a pedestrian lane, even though it’s far from downtown, I think the cable car idea is completely dead now.

There’s a massive bridge connecting New Brunswick with Prince Edward Island . It was totally financed by the conservative federal government. It costs about $50.00 for a car to exit the Island. In no way shape or form does this massive federal project even come close to paying for its maintenance let alone contributing to its capital outlay. Yet, many, many Islanders complain about paying this meagre amount . Finally, the cost of this massive project ( once the largest in the world) was about 1.3 billion Canadian dollars. Only in Atlantic Canada do people complain about paying for a bridge that replaced a ferry that did incrementally increase tourism and vastly reduce travel times between provinces.

The Howe bridge will be longer but the Ravenal bridge is 8 lanes wide. I wonder if 6 lanes will be enough for the Howe.

Have never been to Detroit or that part of the country but it is nice to see that it is making progress in renewing itself and no doubt will take decades. I think that the Great Lakes region could be on the cusp of becoming quite desirable due to climate change over the coming decades. Glad to see a brand new bridge connecting the two cities. Question, is there also a car tunnel as well?

@Yona Aniwodi Well I don't know . Of course US and Canada must be linked on railway. I see always trains coming from USA in Canada mostly freight train. However I was thinking more like passengers train or bullet train where people can travel fast and safe which will lead to more economic development.

@@Rudolfo.Valentino kinda too short to be economically viable for a train. I could see a shuttle bus service being adopted perhaps though. Since it's a border crossing you still have to take security into effect so they have to go through customs to be able to get on a train, and I doubt THAT many people are going to travel back and forth constantly to where a train is needed. Although if they do notice a lot of frequent visitors without cars a bus shuttle makes a lot of sense. Go from one customs station to the next back and forth.

@Yona Aniwodi It's hardly used, and least of all for passenger trains. The Detroit-Quebec City corridor is an ideal case for an international high speed train line but it would seem North America is too addicted to flying and driving to pay any attention to passenger rail.

This project will not be completed by 2024 end on my pediction and will be delayed further so see who is correct for a number pf reasons and may overrun project cost.

A similar cable stayed bridge in Metro Vancouver area crossing the Fraser River had icing problems with ice from the cables (which rise up over the traffic lanes) crashing down on the vehicles. This happened after freezing temps when the weather started to warm a bit. The bridge had to be closed to traffic at times.

We’re not crossing the Bering Sea - we are crossing at the most Southern spot in Canada - we are often called ‘South Detroit. Our climate is now wuite temperate for 9 months of the year. Snow and ice are rare - and the new bridge has this covered

@@blauer2551 yes. They already connected the new part of hwy 401 to where the bridge is being built. Lots of houses purchased and demolished to complete the project

@@OgB1174 They demolished a whole neighborhood on this side, still working on new ramps to link I-75. I’m on the project a lot for work it’s interesting to see the progress. I usually cross at Sarnia haven’t been to Windsor in a while.

What the heck is he talking about at 8:00 ? There is currently only one bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, and that's the Ambassador Bridge - and it's the only bridge there has ever been connecting those cities. Sure there's a tunnel too, but only one bridge.

I had an office looking across the river into Windsor for 5 months. Ever see the boat traffic on the Detroit River? Not tall ship city. Solution, offloading cargo on either side in the rare case it's needed.

It's not surprising that Manuel Moroun didn't want this project to go ahead, or that his pockets were deep enough to spend mad money to obstruct, delay and otherwise mess with it. I can't imagine how much money has flowed to him and his offspring over the years and every day of delay kept it coming. But I don't think anyone on either side of the river had any reason to wish him well. I lived in Wndsor while attendibg the University of Windsor, which is right beside the Ambassador Bridge. My friends and I would cross the border a lot, especially to go to Ann Arbor and that bridge was scary. There were so many holes in the paving, where you could down and see nothing but river under your wheels. I'm surprised that thing is still standing but hey, there's no money in maintenance, is there.

I have crossed the Ambassador Bridge over 60 years ago as a child going to Lake Erie where our family had a lake cottage. At times we used the tunnel that goes under the Detroit River. Those were the days. 😃 now? We live in Baja Sur Mexico, Sea of Cortez. I do not plan to drive over the Gordie Howe Bridge. My brother taught the Howe sons in the 8th grade. Great students.

The theoretical concept has been around for over a century (not just the 1950s), but only in multiple conceptual proposals. I can see it from my window and I cant wait as I live off Huron Line and the trucks are backlogged every day. The new bridge will help avoid all that. The only problem with the new bridge. Matty who owns the Ambassador bridge owns half the truck companies and they are making the other truck companies sign massive contracts to use the Ambassador bridge. If they dont sign it they will be charged double to cross now over signing it..

Here in bc the government tried to toll new bridges. The result was a new government. I am surprised at the design of this one. It resembles the new Port man wich drops ice bombs on cars because cables are over cars

No competition, The Gordy Howell is State and Federal Funded, there will be Zero Toll Fee unlike The Ambassador Bridge which is Privately Owned by Manny Maroon who will not do much needed maintenance to the Bridge so The State Is Building its own.

If they wanted a train to connect between the two cities there’s already a tunnel under the river for rail. Plus there is a bus service currently today that uses the tunnel

Oh, I do hope they put heaters in those cables otherwise run out and buy stocks in a glass company. Whenever it snows over the Port Mann bridge in BC the road will get ice bombed if they don't get the cable scrapers (which, BTW were add-ons after the fact) up and running fast enough. A very poor design for any place that goes through winter.

It’s nice to see a good news story come out the USA and Detroit as well as Canada. They need to decouple their economies from China gradually, do most trade with friendly like minded countries.
