@@lptomtom - I used to be part of the staff that ran those events and managed press fleets. I'm sure they had some effect on endorsement, but if it wasn't a great vehicle, most of the journalists I saw would still publish the perceived flaws. Some would get pretty brutal on it as well. Those were some of the OG print/online journalists though, and when influencers were in the infancy. Today, not really sure with non traditional media being at its highest.

I have a 97 Surf SSRX, which is basically a Japan only (right hand drive) 4Runner. I'm a Brit, living in the mountains of southern France. It's used 90% off road in very rugged country, 530,000 miles on it now, I've owned it 21 years. Sadly for the first time it needs real maintenance, a front wheel bearing failed so I'm replacing all joints, bearings and bushings on the chassis. Not sure I'll get another 500K out of it, someone may, but I'm into my mid 70's now.

I do.. I want tractors. I have a 2002 F350 7.3L Diesel, 6spd manual, manual transfer case, manual locking hubs.. manual seats, locks, windows, mirrors and literally anything else you can think of. It doesn't even have tilt or cruise control; and the front seat is a bench, and so is the back seat. It's a tractor and it's awesome. I will definitely never be selling it.

@@stopchangingmynameyoutube - Its completely different but also the same - Ive owned every S Class Merc from 1994 to 2012 and Ive borrowed a 1989. I gave away my 2012 coupe for free it was such a pile of junk. The electronics had gone nuts, it kept forgetting what accessories it had, it keep draining the battery, it kept sitting itself on the floor, I stopped using it and that made it all 10 X worse when I had to move it - which I could not. The W140 1996 was literally the best car I have ever driven - it was perfect and perfectly reliable. Every model got more electronics and less reliable until they became an unreliable collsection of computers on wheels. At Christmas I was in my neighbour's Mayback S650 - it was like a Twitch DStreemers bedroom with the touch screens and RGB lighting - a €200,000 car with chromed plastic switches and fake leather on the dash. the astonishing lack of engineering made up for by limitless computer options. The paint job was astonishing though. I would NOT recommend anyone buy a 2nd hand Merc today - its going to bankrupt you and frustrate you.

@@piccalillipit9211this has happened with all cars. I own an auto repair shop and when it came time to pick a tow vehicle that can handle my family of 7 and an equally sized travel trailer I looked past all the modern offerings and picked up a 2004 Suburban 2500 with an 8.1. Yes Ive put some significant money into repairs and upgrades but I’m still vastly less money invested then buying anything from the last 10 years and have a more reliable, easier and cheaper vehicle to repair. That’s one reason the used car market has been strong the last few years, not only are new ones expensive but they have too many downsides compared to their previous generations. It’s sad to watch new tech and bloated features beat out good design, engineering and build quality. The manufacturer who figures out how to step back in time in that sense is going to make a killing, we’ll see if government regulations will allow it.

@xxwookey

This is great. The tricky bit is when that period tails off and parts get quite hard to come by. By way of example: it used to be dead easy to get scrap bits for my 1997 Peugeot expert 10 or even 5 years ago, but it's falling off the back end of that now and some things (like rear door rubbers) are just unobtanium (and the design is not simple enough that generic rubbers will do the trick). There is definitely an optimum period for these things. Picking a long-lived design fairly early in the run helps a lot as there is a stream of vehicles 10-15 years newer than yours which get used and retired to keep you in bits for a good long time. Especially if they kept this thing the same for 15 years without even pointless facelifts that's about as good as it gets.

Hard to tell without dimensions, but that front nose looks WAY longer than older 4runners. Something I'm not a fan of for city driving or out in the boonies. Also might just be because of the ridiculous amount of snow we get here, but those bright-ass LED lights are useless for winter driving unless you want to impair your vision more than you're helping. It also sucks having a light burn out and being out $1600 for a headlight because they are sold as singular drop in units. I've broken a fair few headlights out in the woods, that's not a bill i'm looking for.

My "Ugh" list: #1: Toyota still building dumb fully boxed frames that will rust out super easily like all the 4Runners before it. #2: I understand that the push for a 4 cylinder turbo or hybrid is all about CAFE standards, but I really think we will regret the over-complexity that those two types of systems bring. A well-engineered smaller turbocharged gas engine pushing around a heavy truck may be well made, but it's not going to last as long as a well-engineered larger displacement engine. That being said, an 8 speed trans will really help the engine not have to work as hard. Maybe that will offset the smaller engine, in the same vane as how semi trucks haul so much weight with a relatively small engine. #3: I am sad that there's no manual option.

@RyanWithAviators
@RyanWithAviators 2 ай бұрын
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk There is still a buildup of sediment if you ever go off-road. The fact of the matter is, a C channel frame does not need to have much effort put into rust-prevention. That is exactly why heavy duty trucks frames are build that way.
@JohnSmith-pl2bk

Heavy truck. Heavy is the operative word. Thin fully boxed high tensile steel is light in comparison...and used in utes (light pickups) The Nissan Navarra utes also had a fully boxed chassis...which was entirely galvanise dipped... Except there was a kick-up in the frame...a hump.....where the springs were located for the rear axle.. which when the entire frame was lowered into and immersed in the galv bath... caused a air pocket so 6 inches of the "hump" was not galvanised.. In a short time the Navarras folded when the unseen non-galv portions rusted out...from inside! All for the want of strategically drilled holes to let the trapped air out so the galv could flow in.. So I say again...anti rusting spray is the answer@@RyanWithAviators

I wanted a 5th gen so bad until I drove one. It was pure dogwater 😂 The new Toyota trucks having turbo engines is an absolute MUST, but they also seemed to have nailed the styling on every truck too! 15 years in my 88. Was 2400 in 09 now prbly worth close too 15g I really wish they would bring back a convertible option. I own 3 different tops for my truck and they all serve a purpose, one of which is a short canopy that acts like a cab cap where the back seats fold forward and flat then I used a spare tailgate window and regulator so I have a power roll down back window like the tundra and with a bed extender my motorcycke fits perfectly. Or just doing random truck stuff like getting wood, dirt or taking garbage away its nice having that option. But the convertible will always be my favorite part of my truck and what I use the most.

I love 4Runners but I could never see myself giving up the 30-40ish MPG I got with my Hybrid, just for the extra room in the cab and bed in a truck with 18 MPG. But now that its a in line 4, 8 speed transmission with a hybrid with no batteries? You better believe I'm gonna pre order that shit if I can. Plus the packages are nuts from what Im seeing online. Ive never been a fan of the TRD branding but the Trailhunter and Platinum Trim models look incredible.

For 2X4's, there is a roof rack, and there is a trailer hitch. Your touch screen will thank you for using them.

I've owned a 2019 Rav4 XLE Hybrid for just about 10k miles now. Bought it September and I live in nothern Pennsylvania. Hybrids don't love the cold but the past 6 months or so I've had an average MPG of 35. I'm expecting to see that number go up as the weather gets warmer. Probably won't see 45mpg though since it's so big and brick-shaped. Before the Rav4 I owned a 2013 Prius for just over 3 years (stupid deer!) and I still think about that car all the time. I would have kept it but circumstances forced my hand. The Prius would run gas engine all the time over 45mph. The Rav4 will actually let you coast on full-electric at any speed you can go. Allegedly a couple days ago I was passing someone and the speedo hit 100. When I let off the go pedal the big green "EV" light came on meaning "no burning gas" while still going 40 over the limit on a rural highway (allegedly). I suspect the 4Runner Hybrid is going to have comparable mpg improvements over the gas-only.

Turbo 4 is a hard pass but I own other Toyotas, will look forward to a used 2023 V6. My Highlander Hybrid still has a V6. I know, the new hybrid system is different, whatever.

They were forced to use a turbo-4 because of emissions. The government can't make electric cars better but they can make gas powered cars worse thru regulation.

@@sterlingmakara why do you think they have problems? I work at Toyota and we see 0 of these having recalls but new tundras blow up, corollas and rav4s have failing port injectors and plenty of other things. New taco and 4runner is pretty good.

Matt, an unrelated question I've had for a while. Does the snorkel on your 4runner actually work? If you are in 4 foot deep water will the spark ignition work under water?

2:03 Thank you thank you thank you for finally providing the information that it might be possible to Tundra swap. I've been dying to know this. When Titan swapping a Nissan Xterra or Frontier*, you have to either get longer CV axles or swap the front diff. You also need shocks. The Xterra shocks no longer fit. The Titan shocks won't fit unless you also swap the spindle, in which case you might need a bracket lift. I've been meaning to confirm that. This is probably not a difficult problem to find cheap shocks with measurements and travel that matches. But if it's possible to Tundra swap, I'd be shocked, no pun intended, if the market doesn't have a plethora of options within the next few years. There are other things to consider, but I don't remember off the top of my head. * Or Pathfinder. Some of the Pathfinders came with the VK56 V8, and had the diff as well. Which reminds me you can also get parts off in Armada, or Infinity QX-whatever (80?). So don't forget the Sequoia when when checking junk yards. Which also reminds me, it's recommended to purchase dedicated parts, not use junkyard or even stock Titan parts. All of this just makes me want to try it for the hell of it, and experience firsthand how it actually rides and handles. Then I can always spin the big bucks later, and install dedicated parts. I don't mind the labor. I would love to do it, and to be good at it. It's just the time required that's a bitch.

As far as the comment about making highway gridlock better. I'm not so sure. I just got back from a road trip to go see the eclipse. I rented a Toyota Camry with lane keep assist and radar cruise control and was very disappointed that the cruise cancels below 15mpg. Even 4 years ago Subaru had cruise that would bring the car to a stop and start it going again if you tap the throttle. The Camry couldn't be used in traffic, where it is needed most.

I think mine was a 2004. Check Engine Code said Catalytic converter even after the converter was replaced. Then it said O2 sensor even after both upstream and down steam sensors were replaced. Every mechanic who looked at it came up with a different diagnosis but none could seem to fix it. Traded it in and the dealer prompltly advertised it for sale as "As Is"
