the "reason" why technology is so blatantly in our faces in the new movies is because all the old movies were just a 2000's era barbie telling stories to her friends, sisters, etc. but now they've moved into the "real world" in the barbie universe, I believe the new movies started when they stopped being stories in stories, and more just the adventures of barbie and her sisters

For me the island princes hit me really hard because I was adopted and the storyline about roe finding her mother hit really close to home for me. Also ro talking to animals is a huge part of the plot because a bird reveals the plan of the evil queen to poison the wedding cake.

Actually Barbie being a vlogger isn’t important to this specific movie BUT since all the recent barbie movies are more of a series, as they all revolve around the real Barbie and her sisters, her being a vlogger is just kinda cannon in the universe at this point. A Barbie offering I unironically like (and came out when I was an adult) is Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, a "Keeping up with the Kardashians" satire where the dolls know they're dolls and the humor actually works.

In defense of the Barbie vlogging storyline, the movie ties in with her Netflix show where she vlogs on every episode which ties into her KZfaq channel where she posts vlogs... Basically Barbie now has a cohesive universe where all of the modern entries tie into each other.

So to give light about the Barbie movie generation separation, you have the Barbie and the Rockers in 1986 in a league of its own. Usually, that one doesn't count as it is more of a tv specials situation rather than a movie in the regular sense of the word. Then the Barbie cinematographic experience starts properly with the Nutcracker in 2001 and lasts consistently all the way to roughly 2009 ending with the Barbie and the Three Musketeers. This generation is known by the Barbie movie fans as the Golden Age of Barbie movies, but a lot of the movie fans stopped watching this gen around the Magic of the Pegasus movie, holding Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake and Princess and the Pauper closer to heart than any of the others :)))) The second Barbie movie generation starts properly with the Thumbelina, drifting away from fully classical princess movies (the exception in the classic gen being Barbie Diaries ofc) and mixing the modern with the fantastical more often than not, even breaking the pre-existing Barbie cannon in Barbie Fashion Fairytale by confirming Barbie as an actress in the princess movies. Now that Generation lasts all the way to 2014 when the movies get separated by another change in graphics and animation style. Phase 3 of the Barbie movie cinematic universe is what I've come to know throughout my research as the Barbie Experimental phase, where the animators changed Barbie's design almost movie to movie in an attempt to re-invent the character and find the one that sticks, finally deciding to keep it consistent with the release of the show Dreamhouse Adventures and respectively the Barbie Dolphin Magic movie, spawning two movie specials in Barbie Princess Adventure, and the newest Barbie and Chelsea: The Lost Birthday. I guess you could say that the dreamhouse adventure is slowly morphing into its own Barbie phase as it is not clear whether the animation style will be kept consistent from now on or changed to favor newer stories. The first of the “new” Barbie movies is Barbie in a mermaid tail this is where Mattel started writing original stories instead of retelling pre-existing stories and added more of a pop style to the music. Also for the following 4 movies they changed the voice actress of Barbie from Kelly Sheridan to Diana Kaarina

I think the answer to why when the “new” barbie movies started is so ambiguous is because it’s literally just whatever age you got too old for them. So it’s probably different depending on the person. After having gonna back and rewatched some of them, there are definitely some ones that I didn’t think were that good when they came out because I was at that age of “kids movies aren’t cool anymore” that I enjoy now. On the flip side there are some I remembered liking that I don’t like at all now. ...I’m not gonna say which ones here tho, I’m not looking for a fight.

To answer your question regarding the Barbie vlogging plothole: Barbie actually started a series of “vlogs” a few years ago (2015 maybe??) and there was a series made recently (Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures) which continues this random hobby, so I’m assuming that it was a reference to that 🤷‍♀️

If you want a more interesting Barbie character as the main focus of the movie I highly recommend Christmas Carol! It's the only movie where Barbie is the "villain" and its one of my favorite Barbie movies. Diamond Castle has some pretty cool characters too.
