Actually newer BMWs are built to be more reliable lol. New cars in general are built to be more reliable.

pharaon gaming he doesn’t need to own it. However, one drive is not enough in my opinion to make such a strong statement. Listen, the newer cars are better in every way. I’ve owned manual BMW cars and older ones. They have their charm but the cars have evolved for the better. I have an E46 and it doesn’t compare to my new G20.

In the summer of 1989 i visited the US and one of the best things was the BMW 325i convertible i borrowed from my aunt. Epic time.

I have a soft spot for the 90s and older BMWs. They are such good looking cars and the inline 6s are gloriously sweet. They sound great, zip up in revs freely, and really beg to be driven hard. There really isn't anything about the new ones that I want.

I've owned nothing but an e30 since 1995. Currently have an 89 325is and a 91 325 convertible. I'm sorry that was the only option you had for the comparison. I like them both but the automatic convertible is totally different than the 5 speed manual 325is

Fair review. Great job! What does it take with these Germans. What happened to precision? What kind of kids did they raise to think that 330i means a 2.0T? My head explodes at how they could misrepresent things such as that. Or even the engine sound piping through the speakers. Really. Why? And they can’t see anything wrong with it? They’re drunk. The engineers must be getting driven MAD by the bean counters running the company.

In college my roommate had almost that same car. We loved it except it broke all the time. And I mean, all the time. We also ran out a gas like 3-4 times because the gas gage didn’t work. Lol. But it was fun to drive.

Had a 1995 E34, which was a 525i with a 5 speed manual transmission. The most enjoyable driving experience I ever had. Too bad that they do not make them like they used to. Modern BMWs are so far away from what I desire in a car. I will not be buying anymore of them.

Have you actually driven any of the new gen BMWs? If you like the old school stuff, you might like the M2 which seems to get the nod as providing a more 'pure' driving experience.

Excellent comparison. I'm biased because I own a wonderful E30 and love old German autos. But I still think the G20 looks slick, and certainly far better looking than the E36, E46 and E90. The F30 looks similarly cool. I'm not sure how I would be in a car this high-tech and modern though. I have never chosen to own a car newer than my 2004 beater!

I just learned something new from this video. I always thought the 'i' meant inline, not injected. I'm not a BMW fan so I never bothered to validate my thinking. Thanks for the info.

Able to keep up with today's traffic it's one thing I hear a lot, in reality, posted speed limits have not changed much and are still the same as yesteryears in many parts of the US. I own a 32-year-old e28 I can attest the car is just as capable as any much newer car on street or freeway. I do own 2 other cars but when I'm driving solo my car of choice is the e28.

The trunk "low lift-over" was in the 5 series e34 long before this. The e32 7 series, not so much, like the e30. Still, the concept of the "low lift-over" is hardly new. Source: I own an e34 and an e32. Otherwise, Tommy, great job! :)

Nice comparison, although the new BMW will sadly not survive 30 years... My '89 325i just keeps going and going. No BMW is cheap to maintain, however the older ones are simpler and less prone to deteriorate beyond repair due to costs. G20 is nice, but do not keep beyond lease or warranty!

I'll take the E30 to keep as my pride & joy, stays in the garage, never sees bad weather and is pampered. And I'll lease a new 3'er to commute into the city(NYC), run errands and do basic daily beater stuff and turn it in when the lease is up in 3yrs.

Beautiful cars, of that there is little doubt,..my choice would be the 325i,....because I like the idea of a convertible, and it is one of the 'ultimate driving machines' isn't it?

Sure, new is "better" in all ways but: COOL. Add exclusivity as few are fearless enuf to daily a 40+ yr old. I gave up the '81 320i 4 cyl when (then) new 2008 Fit "walked away" on the drive home - but I remember that old BMW, while the Honda is long forgotten.

As much as I love my E46, my E90 is just better at everything, ride, comfort, steering, although my S54 sedan is faster than my 335.

The G20 doesn’t have a toolkit in its trunk because BMW made the car so complicated that no one will be able to work on it when it breaks down on the side of the road

Old German cars were great. New German cars are just like every other new car. They are incredibly complex, relying on electronics and plastic. I like old cars.

The old BMW has a better build quality than that new one and that old one is less in the shop then the new one back in the 80s and 90s and 70s BMW has built solid cars now they cars are piles of trash
