Before Geoff Edwards, the show's early episodes were hosted by Blake Emmons.
In this format, the show implemented a so-called GRAND GAME where the champions win an additional $5,000 by defeating their fifth opponents. However, this was dropped when Edwards took the helm.

This airing comes from the Global Canada airings, as the USA airings didn't have the Pyramid-style opening sequence. The first episode of Edwards CHain Reaction mentioned a $5K bonus for winning five games, but IIRC it was the only time Geoff mentioned it in season one. USA aired the 55 Emmons episodes after the 75 season one Edwards episodes, airing the Emmons episodes originally from 1/12/87-3/27/87 and then from 7/13/87-9/25/87. Geoff mentioned on the 1/9/1987 USA airing that Blake would be taking over the show for a while.

When I first saw this, I first thought it was taped at CBS Television City where $25,000/$100,000 Pyramid was taped.

It was taped up in Montreal. Because of the "CanCon" laws in place (requiring American programs taped in Canada requiring Canadian citizens be shown on air), when Geoff Edwards (an American) took over from Blake Emmons during middle of the first season, the "CanCon" laws required Bob Stewart (the executive producer) to have announcer Rod Charlebois (a Canadian from Montreal) to appear on screen, introducing the contestants and present the home game.

One reason, you would think that is that the familiar audio of the audience applause sweetening that you hear in the background was, and is still, commonplace that is mixed in the audio at CBS Television City for their game shows, (even the taping of Mama's Family used this practice during 1982-1984), and today, every once in a while is used frequently for some specials.

But my best guess is Bob Stewart's production company, since they worked on the Pyramid shows at Television City in LA and those at the CFCF-TV Studios in, Montreal, QC, were allowed under an non-exclusive agreement to use these audio plays of the audience applause sweetening for these tapings.

There were IIRC two five time champs during the EMmons era of the show, one won $17.,900 and one won $19,750.

@@zachhoran well it threw me off because i heard that only was done for the opening in Canada not here in the states though we did receive the show here /

@@louistenore2185 The US airings didn't have the opening sequences like this. The US airings didn't have Rod talking coming out of the first commercial break, to talk about the previous show's Home Game.
