When you have a chance, call a few people and tell them to call their friends to do same which is calling your Congressman to eliminate Jones Act, which has cost citizens in Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and other US territories, millions of dollars annually, simply because the US maritime industry refuses to compete. So, they asked the politicians to protect them. The only way to bring the cost down is through competition. This is actually a fair and healthy competition.

If you allocate 1/3rd or your after tax (24%?) income to housing costs, you need to net 14,000/mo… or like 230k/yr… which is WAY over median income. Dang.

I live in Florida and recently retired. Seems like Hawaii is more to my liking and fits my retirement budget, more than Miami, Florida. I will be visiting Hawaii in the next few months to check it out for rentals in condos for my life in retirement- as an older single woman.

I make $101k a year on the Big Island, lived here since age 2. After paying for housing, utilities, bills, and food I am left with $0 every month. I have to work 6, sometimes 7 days a week to stay afloat. I’m retiring in 6 years, my pension will be half of my salary. I love your passion and concern, but the realty is, unfortunately that too many cannot afford to stay. My entire family has left Maui for Tennessee and Florida.
