Mr. Prashad sorts the war/peace issue very clearly as the NATO 16:09 warmongers and the global south. BRICS is trying to defend themselves against aggression.

As a south african i agree that people here have massivley lost respect for the west, to a pont whereby even american war movies are just a bore and viewed as a form of propaganda.,that mood has spread to SADC countries. New mood!

I live in the belly of the beast yet I know exactly what you mean. The propaganda is interwoven in all entertainment from television series, comedy shows and movies to music, talk shows, and social media. Once you wake up to it, it is impossible not to notice.

Thank you very much for this video. VJ is a humble and kind human. I can see how difficult is ,for the people of the West to understand,comprehend the problems of the South. A little example how German people can accept Israel actions . Trauma is a deep state of pain . VJ is So wise that if you ladies listen to him carefully you will succeeded in your quest.

The British Monarchy is an authoritarian establishment indeed. Also, in the UK, there's the House of Lords besides the House of Commons. Both have legislative powers and legal immunity. The Lords are not elected and their memberships can be entitled by birth for life or be given by the King. A classic recent example is the King gave David Cameron the title Lord and "parachuted" him into the House of Lords, so he could be appointed as the the Foreign Minister by the PM Sunak within 24 hr. after he was given the Lord title. It begs the question: What's so "free and democratic" in this British political system?

@@andrenogueira5058 I don't know much about Korea, but those other countries all have processes that are arguably far more democratic than the u.k. and my country (u.s.).
@andrenogueira5058
@andrenogueira5058 4 ай бұрын
@@NotAPacifist825 The UK had, long ago, a peaceful transition of systems - with the necessary and understandable compromises. The current formula derives from its ancient history. It may not be perfect - none is - but brings with it the immense advantage of allowing for a peaceful evolution. You don't know much about those other countries, which prevents you from having a good benchmark from which to evaluate the UK. Russia has never had a democracy - as China and North Korea never did. People in these countries have absolutely no say, other than through forceful means (when and if they ever come). "Far more democratic"? Well that's total and absolute ignorance. Starting from the top: 1. North Korean "democracy" is a non-existent conept (other than in twisted, deranged minds). It's the ephitomy of a totalitarian, barbarian, ruthless regime, where a self-proclaimed semi.god rules over a brainwashed population, oppressed well beyond the limits of humanity. There is no such thing as democracy in North Korea, in fact it is the most extreme opposit of it. 2. Chinese "democracy" is another aberration reaching the level of bestiality. A bunch of party members have ruled the country for nearly a century. The sons of the leaders are the next leaders - as any pathetic communist regime. Corruption, nepotism, back-stabing are the norm. The common people treated as cattle and, need be, slaughtered to ensure the rulling elite remains so. 3. Russia still performs a mockery of general elections, whilst being a totalitarian, fascist regime, led by a total bastard - who started his public political life by stealing an embezling public funds that shoul have served to feed the starving people of his home city. Putin is in fact the new emperor of the Russian empire despite the fact that he steals from it as it if it were his personal property. The UK is a democratic heaven compared to these aberrations. Your statement depicts your total ignorance or, even worse, your bad-faith. In any case, despicable.

Excellent Vijay, one factor in the change of mood is the fact that Russia has defied Western sanctions and is defeating NATO in Ukraine. They have been an inspiration, especially in Africa. Pleased you say you are a Marxist and articulate the dialectic. I have I been a revolutionary Marxist for 40 years.

Presentations as good as this need a large electronic white board. Vjay Prashad graphically illustrates the structure of his thinking. In many respects Prashad retells standard informed history yet enlivened by his calm tone, uncomplicated vocabulary, fresh examples and eclectic knowledge base. He unmasks ideologically enforced labels, scrunches decades into explanatory phrases and investigates assumptions, trends, different purposes for military spending, the surveillance economy, and contradictions in globalisation, and intellectual property licensing. He notes the regularity of bombing bridges (and ultimately losing wars) rather than building them. He recommends Antony Loewenstein's 2023 book "The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation Around the World". His bottom line is to cautiously observe a "change in mood" coming out of the global south resulting recently in the lead imperial power's Secretary of State saying he is against being bullied. Prashad queries what might come next and argues it needs new ideas, new institutions and less turning territories into rubble.

No ‘BAU’? ‘Most’ ‘economic thinking’ is ‘short run’ and ‘redundant’? ‘It’ ignores the ‘supply side’? ‘Growth’ {and ‘civilisation’} depends upon ‘cheap’ F.F. - those so called ‘halcyon days’ are ‘over’. ? “The crisis now unfolding, however, is entirely different to the 1970s in one crucial respect… The 1970s crisis was largely artificial. When all is said and done, the oil shock was nothing more than the emerging OPEC cartel asserting its newfound leverage following the peak of continental US oil production. There was no shortage of oil any more than the three-day-week had been caused by coal shortages. What they did, perhaps, give us a glimpse of was what might happen in the event that our economies depleted our fossil fuel reserves before we had found a more versatile and energy-dense alternative. . . . That system has been on the life-support of quantitative easing and near zero interest rates ever since. Indeed, so perilous a state has the system been in since 2008, it was essential that the people who claim to be our leaders avoid doing anything so foolish as to lockdown the economy or launch an undeclared economic war on one of the world’s biggest commodity exporters . . . And this is why the crisis we are beginning to experience will make the 1970s look like a golden age of peace and tranquility. . . . The sad reality though, is that our leaders - at least within the western empire - have bought into a vision of the future which cannot work without some new and yet-to-be-discovered high-density energy source (which rules out all of the so-called green technologies whose main purpose is to concentrate relatively weak and diffuse energy sources). . . . Even as we struggle to reimagine the 1970s in an attempt to understand the current situation, the only people on Earth today who can even begin to imagine the economic and social horrors that await western populations are the survivors of the 1980s famine in Ethiopia, the hyperinflation in 1990s Zimbabwe, or, ironically, the Russians who survived the collapse of the Soviet Union.” ? consciousnessofsheep.co.uk/2022/07/01/bigger-than-you-can-imagine/ facebook.com/cosheep

A Better Definition: Instead of using the terms Global South and Global North, I suggest using more accurate terms. Whipco and Pocco. These would more accurately describe the difference between the two. BTW, Whipco means White People Countries and, you might guess, Pocco means People of Color Countries.

Thanks for your "wise" input. In the future i will buy Congolese chocolate because working class of Congo will produce the end product. Even the Gypsy chocolate is more sophisticated and tasty than belgian or swiss chocolate. The swiss, belgian, french, italian or any other fancy fake european working class societies will crumble in a week or two if chain supplies of cocoa, coffee beans and tea are being dismantled.

Saying Russia and China aren't Imperialist is kind of convenient. I've read poth sides of the argument. Both have valid points. But its about facts. China needs to develop the world to use its surplus and to acquire more resources. What do you call that?

@dashong8912
@dashong8912 5 ай бұрын
One would think that developing the world to the point that they have a surplus is a good thing. As for acquiring resources, so long as they get fair value in return, there's nothing wrong with that. For China and Russia to be imperialist they would need to do more. Put economic sanctions on certain small countries, prevent other countries from trading with those targeted countries, conduct regime changes, seize the assets of small countries (eg. Venezuela, Afghanistan), use debt to force countries to open up their economy and run their economy according to certain economic thinking that the creditor thinks best. In other words they have to behave more like how the USA behaves.
