I sell digital hand drawn art and sell as clip art and I can promise you, my digital art is one of THE most handmade things on Etsy. Drawn from hand, first sketch to final sketch, scanned, then redrawn on iPad more than once, first sketch to final sketch. It’s an art supply. It’s allowed. I saw a “Etsy Guru” the other day bashing on us digital artists saying we should leave because we can “sell on other platforms.” Yeah, for 10% commissions. Spoonflower pays 10%. But she sells POD where she gets her art from artists like me to make HER full commission, but we’re supposed to go away. No, gurl. lol.

I’m so thankful for the digital works because it allows me to buy website design, packaging for my shop. This makes makes my shop or business more complete, so I don’t think digital art is bad.

I’m not bothered by digital and AI print on demand all of that. Digital design is still design. No we did not always have digital design because it’s a newer art form, but I don’t see why it should not be welcomed onto an artist platform. There is design involved in creating templates as well and people want them. I don’t have a problem with that being offered either.

My Etsy shop is 9 months old. I sell my digital embroidery designs. Each design takes hours to create and I’ve been a digitizer for 10 years. I’m very happy with Etsy. I launched my website at the same time as a sort of safety net, which I highly recommend everyone do if they have the time/means. I have no plans to leave Etsy. I will continue to build my business in both places.

I have made digitally created decorative letters into vector images. the whole alphabet with the same decorative theme, so they can be used akin to real fonts. There was a lot, really a lot of work involved to get clean vectors. So yes, I do consider these handmade.

I've been selling on etsy for a few years now. I've sold handmade, digital, and POD to roughly 500 orders overall. I think it would be nice if search had a category system that ran off the idea that people were looking for physical items unless otherwise stated. I've bought a lot of digital products off of etsy, all of which were business related and I like that they are available assets, however, I don't like when I'm searching for a physical product(most of my searching) either to purchase or for research and a bunch of digital files clog up the results.

I'm here for the long run. Shopify is in my future but I have things to learn and Etsy is a great place to test what's working and what's not.

I've been on the fence for years about doing an Etsy shop. I've had some major life changes that have shifted my life into a completely different direction. With that said, fear is the main factor for me. That's not an Etsy issue, that's a me issue. However, hearing the changes and the negative feedback is only amping up my anxiety. I'm doing the research and trying to create a plan before jumping into having a shop. Etsy is, in my opinion, a multifaceted entity that is complicated. A lot of moving parts and pieces. I haven't ruled out creating a shop but the negativity from sellers is not encouraging

I’ve been with Etsy since 2014 and I sell crochet knit wear. I do have a problem with POD niche. I really think if are going to sell in a place like this it should be done by them and that is the only problem I have. Everyone wants to through up a shop without doing any work. I plan on sticking with Etsy and I really hope they crack down on all the drop shipping especially what’s coming from china. I’m working on setting up a Shopify shop to go along with my Etsy shop but I’m not in a hurry. I’m working on inventory right now so when I do open my website I will have items to sell and they have to be what’s different from what I lost on Etsy because they don’t want you selling the same thing on both platforms. My friends have had their listings taken down for that reason.

I started on Etsy selling antique and vintage glass, but now have an ETSY POD shop and selling 5 to 8 items per day, and LOVING IT. And NO I use original designs and not Creative Fabrica copy/paste stuff.

Many wedding items coordinate together as a general rule. You need the lead item - the invitation designed first, then the RSVP, Thank You, - other items can be a different design but still should flow with a style/theme. Then there are items that can have a separate style. The invitation would be difficult to create backwards from other items - the invitation is the star..

Question. I have a woodworking, sculpture laser engraving art studio. If I buy large groups of digital bundles of svg files that have commercial licenses for resell and I then put some of those designs on products I personally make from scratch or custome engrave and then sell the product do I have to name the person that I bought those designs or alphabet letters or images from as a production partner and or do I have to modify those designs before I can incorporate then into my handmade products I create and sell as artist creations?

I just started a shop for AI/Digital Artwork, AI as a base, then I rework it in Photoshop. Here's what irks me the most.... While I'm following Etsy's rules for selling AI art, and being 100% transparent about exactly how my paintings are being made, both in my about section and in each listing, I see a ton of successful shops, who are selling AI paintings, and they do not disclose anywhere on their listings or about section how they are making the pieces. They kind of talk around it, and through their omission, are essentially passing their work off as non-ai creations. This is against Etsy's rules, yet Etsy turns around and makes these people Star Sellers. Not good.

Question about ads: If you are already running some ads, does it work to do your 5 day test if you add in that one (extra) product and another $5 budget? It seems like you would not necessarily have your ad budget spent on the new listing. Or do you pause all the other ads while you test the new item?

I think POD is a completely different product than handmade and there's more than enough room for both... to use your example, people buying custom tees are not the same people buying a handmade quilt. I'm still trying to get my store off the ground, but decided to join AFTER many of these changes were made as they seem to be actively working to reduce scammers.

My sales just stopped and are still bad. Can you help?

Why aren't people complaining about those like me who do embroidery? We take someone else design downloaded to our computer then all you do is change the color of the thread or add a personalization. But we don't design it unless you know how to digitize it. At least with POD, you have the ability do edit someone else design.

At any moment Etsy can put your store in permanent vacation mode and you will have no way to get you all of your work back. Take the time create a square space account or Shopify be in control of your brand.

Honestly i love AI. I create both hand drawn designs then touched up in Photoshop and since AI text to image generation was released i also dived into that. And i love it. Yes it can create a design faster than i or other artists can draw it. So what? If you re creative the sky really is the limit. You can mix various styles, create whatever your imagination desires. The people who give AI a bad image i think its those who want to make a quick buck by selling quantity instead of quality. Fast generated images of low quality. However there s also people, like me, who spend hours on end with AI, researching new prompts, mixing styles, wanting to create something unique, high quality and beautiful to give to customers, people who otherwise maybe could not afford to have a handmade version of that digital design that would take days on end to be created. It all depends how its being used. If you use it to help you create and develop a solid brand that stands you out from the rest and delivers quality designs then thats great.

How many views are considered good when running this test?

I have a question. My Etsy shop has amazing photos, I started with 2 products the first week of April and have since added 4 more. From April 7 through today I have $8000.00 in revenue, with a total of 265 sales with an average 4.2% conversion rate and just yesterday got star seller. BUT.. I have been scrambling the last week or so with my conversion rate sliding down a bit and sales slowing. However my main competitor has since outsold me and my listing is dropping slightly. My competitor has mediocre photos at best. Slow shipping and doesn’t have star seller but she is outselling me. I am wondering if my product/page looks to commercial and that customer’s preference to her products is because it’s more handmade looking. Am I off on this, to high of expectations or?? Would love anyone’s feedback

Been on Etsy since 2010. I am sticking around, but it is not as much fun as it once was.

I think having a target audience matters way more than how good your design is. Of course, it has to be somewhat ok, but there are lots and lots of sellers that make hundreds of thousands with really tacky stuff, like sports logos made out of diamonds or borderline unreadable patriotic slogans on similar color background, brown leopard print mixed with tacky neon fonts, comic sans looking fonts with ugly clip art, etc. They just know their target audience prefers that kind of things, you can see it when you browse favorites of people.

As far as the 5 things to sell are you saying 5 totally different things or 5 things of the niche you won't to be in. Thanks, Daniel

I've always enjoyed your videos but this one ticked me off a little. We all are suffering with etsys sometimes questionable platform changes but to hear you start off bashing digital as "not really an etsy product" to me feels like a kick in the digital nuts. To me as a digital creator I consider "handmade" as really someone who crafts something like wood turning, bespoke metal craft etc. Something completely unique say out of a lump of wood, designed on the fly and crafted mainly by hand. For everyone else who creates something unique be it a bit of fused glass, knitted items, clay, leather or silverwork these too are handcrafted. In the same sense digital designers are also creating something unique using on the fly brain power and using the hand, be it using a mouse or digital pencil, and as you said in the video your own wife uses ai and layers elements to create a finished design. This is what the majority of digital products are on etsy. Why is it OK for your wife to get a pass at doing something that she then uses to print on a shirt or mug yet other digital designers are being bashed for? Not everyone can design, not everyone is software savvy and for some being able to buy a design and print on a mug to feed their family is amazing. Without digital creators those people wouldn't be able to do that.
