Lockheed Martin's MAKO missile did not lose in competition for the SiAW contract. Instead, Lockheed Martin chose not to bid on Phase II of the program.
Lockheed Martin provided the following statement:
"While we made the decision not to proceed with SiAW Phase 2, our efforts in advancing the use of digital development tools and processes on SiAW have further strengthened our capabilities for delivering highly survivable and accurate deep strike weapon capabilities to the warfighter."

Earlier this week, Lockheed Martin unveiled the world’s first air-launched hypersonic missile designed to be carried internally by stealth fighters like the F-35 and F-22, marking what could be the single most significant development in hypersonic weapons technology since the first Russian and Chinese hypersonic weapons entered service.

Whats crazy is those probably are our UFO's at least one type of them. Thats how far i truly think we are ahead but time will tell. The military industriap complex is hopelessly corrupt. I can just imagine the Mako being launched out of a UAV. Sounds like a Missile that could fit in one. Like if you could fly an expendable launch platform into an area that is too dangerous for even stealth fighters, it'll do wonders in further extending whatever range this missile has

@@dx-ek4vr I think I know exactly how it fits the criteria. The missile takes off at low Mach speeds for efficiency to get into range of these targets, then once it's in the expected range of a target or programmed to begin the next flight stage, it utilizes the rest of its fuel to make final approach at hypersonic speeds. We don't need hypersonic speeds to send the missile near the target, only to maneuver it into the target. The engine would have to have adjustable thrust though, what is its rocket propulsion?

Mako Shark: up to 46MPH Salmon Shark: up to 50MPH Although, those are from EDU or GOV websites. Whereas the site "SharkSider" states 60MPH for the Mako... So 🤷♂️ Previous to looking right now, I was under the impression it was the Salmon Shark as the fastest, thanks in part to being uniquely warm blooded.

Well YT removed this earlier, for god knows what reason... But depending on the source, Mako=46MPH and Salmon Shark=50MPH I had always known the Salmon Shark to be the crown holder due to it being uniquely warm blooded.

Well, it'll fill a role similar to Harpoon and SLAM (and SiAW, or even HARM). Just faster (being somewhat more tricky to defend against), and with more range as a side effect.

@@j.d.604Oh man… you are missing out. We shove a bunch of missiles onto a pallet and drop it out of a cargo aircraft like a C-130 or C-17, which means we can fire off dozens of these missiles from a cargo aircraft.

Just remember, everything that is cutting edge you’re allowed to see in our military today was around for 10-15 years before you were allowed to see it. The F117A stealth fighter was around in the 70’s. Wasn’t acknowledged until ‘88 or ‘89.

Sure, we didn’t have the Internet, but there were entire publications devoted the following of aviation, and technology- along with hundreds of print newspapers, not to mention television, and radio. True, you couldn’t IMDB all of an actors movies or get instant answers to simple questions, but people were pretty well informed. The internet just makes public information easier to get - as well as disinformation, rumor, and speculation. If information is not publicly available, internet or not you’re not seeing it. Case in point, juvenile criminal records. Not publicly available, sealed. You can’t get them, internet or not.

You clearly have no concept of how hypersonic projectiles work,,,They can't be fired UP CLOSE,,,,They need hundreds of km to atcheve the speed to go hypersonic,,,Lets look at simple physics ,,,Hypersonic missiles need to be huge,,,About 20 or 30 feet long to be able to carry the fuel needed to go hypersonic ,,,,,The bomb bay doors on the F35 are about 10 feet long,,,Are you starting to see the problem yet,,,,,,Russia and China are the only two country's on earth with known and excepted real hypersonic missiles,,,,,,Look up some pictures of all there missiles,,,,,There a common tread you'll see,,,,,,,,,There all massive,,,,,Its the laws of physics ,,,You just can't fit enough fuel into a 9 foot long cylinder for it to go hypersonic,,,,If you think it were possible do you not think the Russians and Chinese would be making tiny hypersonic missiles,,,,And remember Russia is light years ahead of the USA or any country in this field,,,

The US Army just chose General Dynamics and Rheinmetall as finalists for the 4000 Bradley replacement IFVs. Could you do a Firepower series video about this program, the two finalists and the other three that dropped out. Or more generally the current state of IFVs (Bradley, CV90, Puma, Lynx) and their most likely future. Maybe even including anti air IFVs like some CV90 variants and SkyRanger.

IFV's are a tricky thing to get right. They're inherently going to be close to the action, and inherently they can't be so heavy that they can take a hit from numerous forms of ordinance. So, they're always going to be vulnerable, and if used poorly (or even if not) going to end up with significant attrition. Mainly they just need to have good offensive capability, and good overall utility, transportability, offroad speed, etc. Which is why the Bradley has stuck around so long. As an "ok" vehicle for a high-attrition job. I think adding good offensive and defensive capabilities vs. drones, and short range anti-air capabilities, would be at a premium now though. As well as perhaps better camouflage capabilities (visual and thermal). At the end of the day, I wouldn't expect it to be anything "game changing" vs. a Bradley with stingers and tows though.

@@kathrynckplus, these days they are notorious for high tech not keeping up with high reliability. The UK would love you to forget about their IFV drama, the new German Puma is in the headlines for high failure rates in testing, and commenting on Russia seems unneccesarily cruel at this point.

@@texasranger24 Personally, I lean kinda "less is more" for IFV's. Kinda like the LAV. As long as it can tank a modest sized mine or IED, man-portable firearms (50's etc), the ubiquitous 23mm, and you can put a couple MPATS & MPADS on it... But drones are getting to be a really serious issue. So some capability to at least keep those at bay, would be a huge plus. I think the new IFV is intended to have a new 50mm, ya? As long as that has the option of anti-air shells, and some decent targeting system (and good elevation)... that could be a big asset. I'm NOT any sort of expert on ground vehicles though :) I'm aerospace. Aircraft I know, missiles... but ground vehicles? Probably know more than a random person in line at the local market, but my thoughts might still be very naive hehe.

GREAT video dude. I assumed the US was going to put something on aircraft this decade, and was hoping to see something around 2026 - 2028, ready to provide capability to our forces and I agree with the idea of adding this piece to the arsenal no matter how good a newer missile might be, but I like the thought of different companies producing missiles because it's more minds working on the "problem" to give new solutions.

Could you do a video about the future of Shorad? Will short range air defense provided by the laser stryker? Will the Bradley replacement IFV XM30 function as an anti air cannon? Should the US look at the SkyRanger / Skynex / millenium gun system? And will there be a Stinger replacement with a better battery, targeting, and most importantly more affordable? Or is this affordable future the APKWS guidance upgrade for the cheap and plentiful Hydra 70mm rocket? Should we slap that on Avenger Hummvees? Or IRIS-T?

Air defense has always been a multi layered approach. If you look at the current US M-SHORAD program, then there are three increments or components to the program. First a SHORAD Stryker variant carrying a 30 mm airburst autocannon, 4 stinger missiles, and 2 hellfire missiles. Second, a stinger missile/manpad replacement. Third, a laser variant of the Stryker named Stryker SHORAD-DE (directed energy). Short range air defense and anti drone warfare will consist of MANPADs, other DE systems, EW, Stryker SHORAD, and Stryker DE. Lasers and EW will be the most effective systems to use against massed drone attack while being both repeatable, accurate, and cheap. Second would be the airburst autocannons. Third would be MANPADs. Lasers, however, are limited by atmospheric conditions, but I've read somewhere that the Stryker DE can take out 30 drones before needing to be recharged by it's own diesel engine. (Citation needed)

Nobody is waiting till they're 20 miles from a ship, to engage it. If this weapon is fielded, it'll be launched from > 200 nautical miles, and it won't use laser guidance. It'll have GPS/INS guidance, along with imaging infrared, millimeter wave radar, and possibly ESM, to find targets.

@@rogerbiggerstaff3293 My main point is closer you are before launching, so long as the weapon has time to fully deploy, the less time the enemy has to provide tracking info to it's CIWS systems. And lasing is extremely hard to jam. This would be a WWIII scenario where the risk outweighs the reward. In all other scenarios using standoff tactics with little risk to your own assets definitely makes better sense.

@@kstriclit doesn't matter if it's WW3 or not, you're not going to fly within 20 miles, before launching. Not only does that increase the likelihood of detection, and alert defensive weapons, but it increases the likelihood of getting shot down before launching. So.....in a wartime scenario, you're going to use the radar horizon to your advantage, not giving up the element of surprise, and fire your weapon outside the MEZ. There's absolutely no advantage to launching from 20 miles, when the enemy's reaction time against the missile doesn't change.

At the end you said Mako is just digital … So it has been physically test fit to an F-35. I think it’s also been carried and released - but not fired. Both of those could be done with an inert mockup/prototype. So, it’s beyond digital… but not quite “production ready.”

It doesn't have the range, to be used for Rapid Dragon. No C-130 or C-17 is going to fly within 200 nautical miles of Chinese/Russian targets.

making the weapon bigger defeats the purpose. Secondly, no C-130 is getting within 200 miles of a carrier, during wartime. They'll have AEW&C aircraft along with CAP aircraft, as well as escorts with long range SAMs.

That's a very good question. Although if it's being picked up as an OTA, probably not too insanely high. OTA is kinda the "window shopping" budget for the military, and leans heavily into the Clearance priced isle. But "not too crazy expensive" is still a very vague range ;)

@@mill2712 I somehow missed that while watching. So about double the cost of a Harpoon or SLAM (which would be the similar non-hypersonic missiles). That's not too bad for extra range and greater difficulty shooting one down. Definitely won't "retire" it's slower siblings, but it's a workable price for a high-low mix.

at that size and that speed, stealth probably isn't all that necessary. by the time opposing radar techs see the increase in cross section when the 35 opens its bay doors it'll be too late to do anything. Either their radar will be dead or the launcher will be before the tech has time to launch something in return.

The aim-120d AMRAAM goes what? Mach 4? The new 260 goes even faster. Hypersonic is what? Mach 5ish? It doesn't seem that far of a stretch that a new missile goes just fast enough to be considered hypersonic AND maneuverable.

On the analyst side I think our definition of hypersonic should include a third or maybe even fourth category and for the maaco, I am proposing rocket propelled terminal hypersonic effector. This category could include both warhead equipped and kinetic impactor based missile systems. It accounts for the difference between a rocket-propelled system, a air breathing engine system, and a hypersonic glide vehicle while still being broad enough to include potential interesting options including hybrid, glide vehicles that are only hypersonic for their terminal phase with the use of a rocket motor

I love your channel always informative and interesting. I was wondering if you do videos on some of the subsystems, like the things that hold rockets, bombs and missiles in place. I am more interested in the history and future developments of these unsung heroes. While I was watching this video, I was fascinated on how many smaller things go into making a weapon system work. While you did mention this for the weapon itself and to a smaller extent the 30in lugs, I would be very interested in these less sex systems as well. Just a thought.

Wow, this video should win you an award! The editing was sharp, the labeling on the video cuts was clear and readable. Your script was informative and exciting at the same time. Also I am a fan of your vocal talents. You are so humble, I guess it's your blessing in life. I really hope Lockheed Martin get US some samples in the next two years. We need these weapons sooner than later. History is rhyming this go around as it did pre-WWII. The war in Ukraine will draw other EU countries into further military support. France is showing true balls. If the UK can get it's head out of Brexit for a few mins. I am sure they would commit troops along with France is some support capacity. More ammo needs to come out of storage, but isn't that always the case?
