It is worth $80? I'll be under a couple of my cars soon, and my old creeper was...limping. I noticed a brand-new Icon creeper on the HF website, and decided to try it out! (*apologies for filming in portrait mode*)

Ive been wanting a h.f plastic creeper. Thanks for the vid, Ill probably pick up one or the other depending on price difference. I currently have a super old school wooden auto zone creeper.
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
You'll have several options. They have a couple old-school options (metal frame, pads) for $35 and $70 (Pittsburgh and Daytona) as well as $35 and $80 plastic-molded creepers (the two in the video Pittsburgh and Icon). If you use them occasionally, the less-expensive ones are probably fine. If you use them often, the more expensive ones are probably worth it. I don't entirely blame the broken wheel on HF - I was running across that lip a fair bit over the last several years and I'm not a small boy. I got the Icon knowing the lip situation wasn't changing any time soon and figuring it was at least twice as sturdy. I'll probably store the old one somewhere as a backup, but likely won't ever need it - the Icon feels extremely sturdy... Thanks for visiting!

Just got mine today. Have yet to try it out, but I do like the magnetic pockets, and the metal mounting plates on the side of the headrest for mounting magnetic work lights, those are gonna be useful as most of my smaller work lights are magnetic, and i wont have to just drop them on the ground mext to me then risk rolling over or kicking them while working.
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
I hadn't noticed the plates at the top! I just went in my garage and my M12 Rover light attaches nicely! THAT'S going to come in handy!

Here's the fix to strengthen the $27 Harbor Freight creeper...... when it's new drill 1 hole on the edge between the caster bolts (total of 6 holes) and fill it with "Great Stuff" expanding foam. $5 at Home Depot. I did mine and I'm 6'5" at 310 lbs. Works like a charm, it's solid as a rock, does not flex, and hasn't added any weight.
@themessygarage Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting solution! You mean fill the whole chassis, not just the wheel area?
@superslyko123 Жыл бұрын
@@themessygarage no… I just filled up the 6 wheel areas. I used the whole can, lay it horizontal & dry overnight. The stuff expands on it’s own & improves the creeper 1000%
@rubenesparza7546 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the main flaw is that there is no suppport fit the bolts that hold the wheels. The foam will fill the gap and essentially create a solid section of plastic so the wheels won’t flex, reducing stress on the plates and plastic. Don’t need it on the whole creeper, just the fail points

The old Pitsburg wheels would lock up on the tinies pebbles. How is the icon?
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
Really good. The whole thing is a LOT stiffer, and it moves better. I've used it a fair bit over the last couple weeks, and been very happy.
@2009KVFD9762 жыл бұрын
They used to be $20-25. Now with the new colors, they are $35-40 but the quality still sucks. I am just a weekend DIYer and am of the unprofessional opinion they can be easily beefed up by them using slightly longer carriage bolts and either using a metal plate between the bottom of the plastic creeper and the Caster flange or making the caster flange wider so it doesn't pull the plastic out when using it.
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
For the Pittsburgh, using two bolts creates a pivot point. I agree a metal plate would help, but ultimately the Icon is using beefier plastic, four bolts for each wheel and a plate. I'm really seeing the difference in how sturdy the Icon is - I didn't really notice the flex in the Pittsburgh until I used the Icon - lol.
@2009KVFD9762 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if the icon has an integrated metal frame that the casters bolt to instead of just rivet or speed nuts. I pulled the casters off previous creepers in case one fails I had spares. When this one finally craps out, I'm getting the icon. Hopefully they have replacement casters soon.

It doesn't take much to be a big upgrade from the Pittsburgh . I went through 3 in 6 months. I've several others as well as several other brands that have not held up any better
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
The Pittsburgh is clearly a light-duty product. I'm not exactly a light guy, and have been pretty busy in the Messy Garage over the last couple years, so while I'd say it wasn't a bad product, it's definitely not the one to pick of you're a bigger guy and/or you do a lot of work involving a creeper. I change the oil in three of our cars today - the most I've used the Icon creeper yet - and I have to say it is clearly a better product (as it should be for $80).

How in the world do you go through 3 creepers in 6 months? Either you're too big for them or idk it's not possible
@cbmech25632 жыл бұрын
@@AFatherToTheFatherless or they are crap. I've yet to see one of the plastic creepers that are really very good, probably an inherent design problem.
@AFatherToTheFatherless2 жыл бұрын
@@cbmech2563 even in a poorly designed one you must be doing something...the only things possible are you're throwing it around or you just plain weigh too much and you need one with a metal frame

@@AFatherToTheFatherless the first one maybe I was a little rough on it, the second one? Not a chance. The 3rd one I have at home and use it 2 or 3 times a year. I have a jeepers creepers creeper at work abuse the shlt out of it, throw it and what not with zero issues. Bought the pitsburg and first time use it broke as I sat on it I weight 220 lbs I guess by letting my self fall on it the force exceeded the 300 lbs. I wonder if thay icon is any better, and honestly I'm not a fan of how wide it is it seems bulky, maybe I should purchase the metal one or another jeepers creepers.
@themessygarage2 жыл бұрын
Having used it a fair bit since the video, I'd say the Icon is a LOT sturdier than the Pittsburgh: Stiffer, more strongly built, better casters attached at four points vs. 2, thicker/denser plastic, etc. Definitely a whole different animal.
