Hello Math, Jose from Puerto Rico. This was a fine review of this camera. What I enjoyed about it is that you did a real-world test. Sure, as I've seen on other channels, you can speculate or show a technical specification sheet of the camera. But there is a difference between specs, theories, etc, etc about what a camera will do based on a sheet of paper and an actual test by getting out there at 12 mid-night and shooting with the camera as you did. This is why I subscribed a long time ago to your channel even though I don't own a Leica camera or for that matter any camera yet. Frankly, it exhausts me to see other channels make a judgment on equipment solely based on what is written on a spec sheet and not actually trying out a Leica or any other equipment and seeing for your self the results. You're a very knowledgable photographer who has fun doing what you're doing and in the end, that is what it's all about: enjoyment of Photography.

Finally, someone posting high-ISO and long exposure results! It seems like M10R is great for amateur night sky photography, bar the poor coma correction on the rangefinder lenses. If only LENR was not mandatory!

Thanks for this . It seems Leica are very cautious about sensor heat damage. I saw your video in the Q2 and night photography. It's a bit of a shame the cameras are limited in this way.

using the rule of 500/35mm you get 14 seconds max exposure time for pinpoint stars, so in the picture with 8 seconds there is coma aberration from the lens.

Hi Math, very informative video, thank you. Can you please advise how M10R sensor is compared to SL2 sensor, in terms of overall IQ, dynamic range and low light (high ISO) capability.

Hi Math, again a very informative video indeed. I would follow Farhad here and am also interested in the M10R / SL2 dynamic range and low light performances. I was also impressed by the 50K ISO output. Is there a chance you can elaborate a bit on to achieve this result? Thanks. René

Is there any way you could tell me if that'd be the same results with regards to dynamic range with the M10-P ? I was originally thinking of getting the R, but thanks to your other video, ie the one where you compare the two side by side, I prefer the convenience of the smaller file sizes as well as the images you showed coming out of the P version (as opposed to the R version), so am tempted more by that lower pixel count model now (thanks to you!) :) Thank you :)

Very useful video. I was hoping to see how you set the ISO to 50,000. Is this the procedure to used to set the ISO to 50,000? 1. In the Menu, in the ISO Setup, set the M-ISO and/or the Maximum Auto ISO to 50,000. 2. If you set the M-ISO to 50,000, then select the "M" setting on the ISO dial. 3. If you set the Maximum Auto ISO to 50,000, then select the "A" setting on the ISO dial. 4. The "M" setting will only set the ISO to 50,000. 5. The "A" setting may set the ISO to 50,000 or it may set the ISO lower than 50,000 depending on how much light is read by the light meter.

It would be interesting to see the (hand-held) 'street photography' equivalent of this video. The thought boggles my mind. Are Leica's Noctilux lenses suddenly obsolete?
@Gravitys-NOT-a-force
@Gravitys-NOT-a-force 3 жыл бұрын
@Chris, no, at f/0.95 you have almost no depth of field. Day or night, no other lens can pull one face out of a crowd like the Noctilux.

Hi! I recently purchased a m10R. I found a lot of color noise in the dark parts of the pictures when shooting at around 6400 iso. Is it normal? My Fuji xpro3 doesn't show that even in the back screen

Thank you very much for the nice video. The most interesting thing about the r is the fact to have longer exposure times at high ISO values. So I would have another question: is it possible to disable the noise reduction after the exposure. This would also be a big advantage because after 2min exposure you wouldn't have to wait another 2 minutes. Thanks for an answer

Thanks for the nice comment. I don't think its possible to switch off long exposure noise reduction on M cameras. It is possible on the SL2 but not on the M10-R.

Math, now that you have tested both the M10M and M10R, do you have a preference between the two for your rangefinder shooting?
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, but these are really different cameras. If someone is a black & white shooter only, the M10M is perfect since the sensor is developed and optimized for B&W. If you need both, color and B&W then the M10-R is the natural choice because there are excellent apps for converting color into B&W, like, e.g., Silver Efex from the Google Nik Suite. And then you have the color option if you need it.

So, how does the low light performance of the M10R compare to the standard M10? To put it another way, If ~24mp is sufficient for most folk, then is there still an argument for going M10R on the grounds of its low light capability being much better?

Is the M-50 Noctilux technologically advanced enough for this camera? Meaning, is the new 40MP sensor too accurate and thus shows flows in the Noctilux rendition?
@byronnip6198

Hi SJ, based on my experience with M10-R+Noctilux 50 ASPH, I think the Noctilux definitely takes advantage of the new sensor when I compare it on a M9-P.

Hi Math, first of all congratulations on your reviews. I wanted to ask you 1. for image quality which of the three is the best m10r, sl2 or q2? 2. don't you find it a limitation on the m10r to have only 1/4000? thank you.
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leon, let's group them in the following way: the Q2 and SL2 have give or take the same sensor, I do not see any differences here and the SL2 clearly followed the Q2 when it comes to their sensors. The M10-R is the newest sensor so very likely a tiny little bit better since any camera manufacturerer learns from past developments and the M10-R sensor is the newest so has likely incorporated all lessons learned from previous Leica sensors. The M10-R also has a little less resolution but still plenty with 40MP and will therefore very likely have a little less noise when shooting with higher ISO values. I am also sure the M10-R benefitted in the sensor development from the development of the M10 Mono sensor research since the M10-R sensor likely is an M10 Mono sensor with a color filter array on top. To your second question: light needs to be very bright outside if you need 1/4000sec shutter speed. Having said that, on a sunny day that can happen. Stopping down aperture a bit will help or using one of Leicas excellent ND filters. In practical shooting situations, 1/4000sec is fast enough almost anytime but I experienced very few situation where the limitation to 1/4000sec imposed restrictions on aperture, could then not fully open to f/1.4 or therelike.

ISO 1600 is usable on the M10-R but still shows plenty of grain. From ISO 3200 upwards the images fall apart. There is not much difference to the M240 in high ISO performance. Nevertheless the dynamic range and resolution are amazing, especially old lenses will benefit from the resolution.

The entire video is misleading, with 4s or 8s of exposure time, most if not all of the cameras can see in the dark. Comparing m10-r with a7s instead of a7s iii in 2020?

Yeah, powerjazz and military sensor designer in Californians is far superior to any consumer grade sensors manufacturers by Sony. The foundry is newer and designed specially for Leica sensor products, these sensors have been ten years in development and it’s payed off brilliantly.
