The Axeman has become a figure of American folklore; a jazz-loving serial killer preying on Italian grocers in 1910s New Orleans.
Miriam C. Davis, the author of "The Axeman of New Orleans", chats with me about the series of murders that terrified the city and helps separate myth from fact.

I wasn’t aware there was such a big Italian presence in New Orleans, either, or that there was direct trade between New Orleans and Sicily.

I always thought it was common knowledge that New Orleans back then had a large Italian population. Trumpet player, entertainer and comedian Louie Prima came on the scene years after a number of Italian Dixieland jazz players had made their mark alongside black musicians.

If so, he would have been back before the war ended. Killings didn't start until May 1918 and the war ended in Nov. 1918. Maybe he was wounded in the war and came back with a grudge (or was messed up?)

I disagree that it's a racially motivated killer because he would have just killed people of other races indiscriminately. That he killed Italian grocers means it's more personal and specific IMO. My view is it's either a white male or Italian male (if Italians weren't considered white) who was a laborer who'd been fired by an Italian grocer (or grocers) and targeted them for revenge. That he was a sociopath is why he persisted.

New Orleans was the birthplace of the mafia in the US. Maybe it was The Black Hand who murdered people?
