My dad works in the emergency ward, the amount of people that don't look before crossing is honestly amazing, youd think the risk of a two tonne car ramming into your legs would scare you enough into thinking "i might wanna check the road before crossing" and funnily enough the majority of people are older folk who think cars will give way to them because they're older (its part of the culture there that older people are highly respected so many people will go above and beyond to cater to the elderly) so they step out onto busy roads without looking and thwack, they wake up staring at my dad lol. The rest are younger kids who are too busy on tiktok to look at the road before stepping out infront of a bus. Hong Kong by the way.

The new highway code doesn't over-rule light controlled crossings so pedestrians still have to wait for the green man. I get the feeling that the "clarifications" are preparing everyone for all the electric vehicles that'll be out there in the future. Preparing all the drivers and riders to watch out for the pedestrians who can't hear an internal combustion engine let along a near silent electric one. They also seem unable to open their eyes but thats stupidity for you. Pedestrians also need to realise that priority is given not taken. You wait to cross, I see you waiting, I give you priority and slow down/stop, allowing you to cross safely. You don't walk out expecting everyone to stop for you, so many things could happen (sun in drivers eyes, distracted by another pedestrian/vehicle, etc) and the pedestrian will always come off worse. I have a solution. Get rid of the priority system, remove the warning labels and signs off everything (food, medicine, electrical equipment, cliffs, etc) and let nature take its course. We should eliminate most of the true idiots in months.

Also Dizzy, there are terrible drivers as well. Perhaps driver reexamination should happen every 3-5 years, depending on age.. or lessen after getting a perfect score multiple times. Regulations should be stricter. Also, vehicles motorcycles or larger are deadly devices.
@Dizzy473
@Dizzy473 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlose6010 I can understand about the re-examination idea but it sounds like just one more way for the government to squeeze cash out of the motorists. Now an assesment after an accident or a traffic violation I could support with the right conditions/rules. I agree that a vehicle (motorcycle, car, van, HGV, etc) has the potential to do more harm than a cyclist or pedestrian but that's why if you break the law the punishments are proportionately harsher. I'd also argue that everyone has the potential to cause a lethal accident on the roads. A pedestrian steps out in front of a car without looking, car swerves and hits a cyclist coming the other way. The car may have collided with and killed the cyclist but the cause of the accident was the pedestrian. We all have the potential so we must all share the responsibility for keeping the roads as safe as possible. The hierarchy of users in the highway code has good intentions but is badly flawed. Right now the problem we have is an inequality of prosecution, for example cyclists run red lights with greater frequency than motor vehicles because it's highly unlikely they'll be caught and punished. In hackney over a span of 90 minutes at one set of traffic lights police stopped 18 cyclists for running a red light, the cyclists received a £50 fine and educated about traffic safety. This only happened because the police ran a special operation. Cyclists aren't even required to read the highway code so many may not even know the laws and guidance they're supposed to follow on the road.

Let's also address the elephant in the room: the UK has an abundance of traffic lights lacking pedestrian lights (such as in the clip before the last one). So pedestrians are left guessing when it's safe to cross, which is not so obvious at busy junctions. I have one like that near where I live and I intentionally avoid it as it's around a blind corner, so drivers turning into the junction I cross as a pedestrians can't see me crossing. Incredibly dangerous.

If you can see the traffic lights, they're usually a good indicator.... 🤔
@edoardoruggeri1
@edoardoruggeri1 2 жыл бұрын
@@g.w.customcreations3534 nope they aren't. Say you have an intersection between road 1 and road 2, with a set of traffic lights for each. At any point in time, set 1 or set 2 will always be green for cars. There is no point in time in which set 1 and 2 are both red. So if I want to cross road 1, and set 1 is green, I can't cross for obvious reasons. If set 2 is green, it's still unsafe to cross as there might be cars coming from road 2 wanting to turn into road 1 (which I'm trying to cross) without indicating (happens very often). So I as a pedestrian are left to guess on whether the cars are indeed not turning if they don't indicate, or whether they just forgot about indicating. This is a traffic light arrangement that I've only ever seen in the UK. In all other countries, if there's traffic lights for cars, there always are also traffic lights for pedestrians with associated zebra crossings.

There's nothing in law to compel a pedestrian to read the highway code at all. We have a rulebook of how to make use of the road system in harmony with each other but the biggest category of road users aren't required to know any of the rules. There needs to be a test before anyone is allowed on the road, including pedestrians.

Jaywalking laws aren't very effective as people will just do it anyway - where I grew up (Hong Kong) jaywalking is illegal but police do it anyways lol. Also there's no way to introduce a law regarding headphones, as how would you police it? You wouldn't know if there is even any music playing, it could be an audiobook or may not be playing anything at all - then there's the ethical side, if you can introduce a law regarding people not being aware due to their lack of ability to hear what's going on around them - that could also technically (unintentionally) apply to deaf people as well.

If a vehicle is turning into a road and there is a pedestrian at the side of the road waiting to cross the vehicle should stop and let them cross. The man at 00:52 is or was a famous tv-presenter who was fired for sexual harassment of several women and interns at one of the largest channels in Denmark. One of the complaints came from a woman who told how he late on night tricked her to an apartment the station has on the pretext of meeting other co-workers. There another man (unnamed but famous too) and he were trying to kiss and get it on with her although she kept saying no. He slapped her and the other guy just laughed at it. Luckily she got out with only a slight bruise. Many years later an investigation was initiated because of several other sexual harassment claims at that large station and this story alongside other women’s story came to light. Jes-Dorph Petersen got canned but he would never admit to anything other than the usual sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable speech.

Stupidity is perennial and has nothing to do with the new Highway Code rules. The pedestrians who are stupid now were just as stupid before the changes. Walking into the path of a fast-moving vehicle is no more or less stupid than it ever was. I’ve been a pedestrian, a cyclist, a motorcyclist, a car driver, and an HGV driver, and now a wheelchair user, and I have survived for as long as I have because I learned when I was very young, when it is safe to cross a road and when it is not. Unfortunately, some people are slow learners, and that includes many drivers who drive as if traffic laws were written for everyone but them. I still remember from more than 50 years ago, my driving instructor telling me that I need to assume that all other road users are stupid, and I must always expect the unexpected: it was good advice. Too many road users leave themselves no escape route when the unexpected happens.

Same as in Australia, modern road rules are to cater for the lowest level of competence. Rather than enforce current laws just change them so it's the vehicle driver responsible for everything. Vehicle drivers with registration plates are much easier to identify and fine than pedestrians giving false names, plus it can be done by traffic camera with no confrontation needed.

I'm not sure if it's technically a 'law' or not. I think it's more that the highway code is 'guidance' that when an incident occurs, is backed up by certain laws to determine fault/guilt/liability. But AFAIK pedestrians only get priority at junctions where the road they are crossing has to give way. Not, as many people in big cities seem to think, wherever they decide to walk out into of traffic.
@sumorabbit2160

@@sumorabbit2160 The worst part about that, is the people 'trying to justify their pay packet' are the ones all the way up to the top. @archaeolas
@archaeolas 2 жыл бұрын
@@espenius91 We have quite a few different types of pedestrian crossings in the UK. Some have lights, some don't. Like the 'zebra crossing' for example. If a pedestrian wants to cross the road on a zebra crossing the traffic must stop for them. This new rule is different though. It's talking about all road junctions. It doesn't specify that there must be a drop curb or any kind of marking or indication, other than the presence of a pedestrian who may or may not walk out into the road... Road junctions are the worst place to cross a road. You should always use a marked crossing or at least a straight section of the road away from corners or junctions so that the traffic has more chance to see you.

There isn't a new law though, the changes clarified existing laws. Road users of any persuasion getting high and mighty about their rights and who is wrong when two people are trying to use the same bit of road is not new and will continue. Don't ride so fast through junctions and if you're on your feet, don't walk into the road like you assume the world has to stop for you every time. Mostly, be considerate of others. Simple.

It's never been a law, just HWC guidance. The difference now is that pedestrians, and sometimes cyclists, have priority even whilst waiting to cross. Vehicles in that scenario SHOULD stop to give the more vulnerable road user priority. (I'm not championing this rule change; I think it's crazy, and said so in my reply to the consultation on it.)
@jncg2311
@jncg2311 2 жыл бұрын
@@chrispop99 I think we are making the same point. If you mean the Rule H2 that has caused the most upset, it does contain reference to law, as do many of the recent changes made to the HWC. I think this is the issue with the HWC in some respects, there is too little understanding that it is both a rule book of laws that pertain to road users but also extensive rules and guidance that may not be enforceable by law but are necessary for people to get along wile using the roads. The 'should' rules and guidance in the HWC are there to support the 'MUST' laws. My point was that something doesn't have to be law to be common sense and that attempting to pick and choose while sharing the road with many other road users (as is the case in almost ever built-up area of the UK) mostly indicates ignorance. I don't entirely agree with the wording of the first statement on rule H2 but I do believe that elevating pedestrian and cyclist safety is important as we clearly don't have the mean to change road layout everywhere to something even more like the Dutch model which would reduce conflict by separating those users from vehicles more often.

So there seems to be a lot of confusion around the new rules. They are only around junctions not just all pavements. So the last one for instance the pedestrian doesn't have right of way still as it isn't a junction. It is only if you are turning out of or turning into a new road. Rule H2: New priority for pedestrians at junctions At a junction, drivers, motorcyclists, horse riders and cyclists should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning. You should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross a zebra crossing (currently you only have to give way if they’re already on the crossing), and to pedestrians and cyclists waiting to cross a parallel crossing. TL:DR If it's not a junction then the rules haven't changed.
