It might not make sense to your average viewer but entrapment is something the FBI, Americas Political Police, does every day. They are also considered "Good Guys", just like Republic Police. Like this New Republic, if you look at anything around you too closely its easy to see the shaky web of lies that hold everything together and the better you serve the lie the more you prosper.

@@brettstarks1846 Unfortunately, I think they only diverge from the Empire when it comes to public behavior. Tolerating secession, not using imperial ships, the Reform housing is on the surface. Yet they refer to the reformees by letter-number designations, and are dismissive of prisoner's due process rights. It's disappointing, but I think the solution is not to be part of a massive centralized government. Nevarro and other independent worlds should just have trade and mutual defense agreements, while respecting each other's self governance.

This is in direct contrast to what other ex Imperial went through (Sinjir Rath Velu, that member of Alphabet Squad or others through the Galactic Civil War). They stripped then of their personality and gave mind manipulation to the ones who question their rules (completely ironic). I know Leia left because she withheld important family ties but man, Cara Dune really saved Bill Burt character when she busted him out for a mission. What is the NR aversion to Clones after Clones saved them during the Clone Wars? I get that Bad Batch is showing why but man, this organization is the Empire with a bright coat of paint. We also hear that they are in the process of disarming both any Imperial gear they can get their hands on as well their own fleets while unrest in the Outer Rim continues to boil, people like that Pirate King and the Imperial Warlord are more than happy that is going and I do believe the NR is more than willing to tell their remaining Spec Ops to disband in the middle of missions and likely prosecute them for hurting the remaining enemies. Now I want to see the show with Cara more than before. The Mandalorians are coming as the best group to be in the SW universe, and they are a mixture of: Viking, Spartans, Mongolians, etc while also being upfront about it. They can also be able to reform their culture as shown during Satine ruling.

Seems we all have the same thoughts, that Elia is still working for the empire. I was expecting her to say long live the empire under her breath at the end of the episode. They had that nice, long love the new republic bit at the beginning, it just would have been a nice book end to it all.
@glen9593

Elia is defintely a double-agent working for someone who's working for palpatine (probably Gideon). They threw out enough clues to make it almost impossible, from a story perspective, that she isn't. Some of the clues are on the nose. Her name for example, sounds a lot like 'a liar'. When they're eating the photon-lollies (I can't remember the name they use) hers is red and his is blue - if they were lightsabers instead of lollies it would be more obvious. The fact that she only appears in the episode when the Dr is giving his speech indicates she is there specifically for him (also fixing her badge on her chest at that moment as though this is an identity she has specifically for this reason). The tactics that she uses. The fact she turns the machine up to 11. I could go on. She's a wrong 'un, no doubt. I wish the sequels didn't exist or would be erased but as they are currently still cannon, and this show is leading to those films, what other explanation could there be? Love your channel man, been following for a while. Cheers.

I love this episode and I see it with alot of nuance for the New Republic. To me, things are clearly better than the Empire, Coruscant looks to be more free and lively than now. Additionally, the amnesty program shows the NR is way more moral than the Empire, who would have executed or prison camped their enemies. However, its also clear that the NR has alot of flaws. They are so morally self righteous that they are detrimentally ignorant. Additionally they have so much Empire ptsd that they demilitarised drastically and refused to learn from them. Shows how sometime strength and efficiency is needed as well as morality. Lastly, one great thing is that the rich still stay rich after the revolution, shows how that somethings don't change.

I love Coruscant too, Allen. I get an emotional thrill every time I see it onscreen. And yet... I'm sure I don't have to tell you... it is an *_abomination!_* An entire planet encased in a skin of concrete, metal and plastic? An entire ecosystem brutally wiped out so that a trillion humanoids can exist there, mostly living lives of joyless drudgery? Would you like to see that happen to Earth? It couldn't of course. Mother Nature would wipe us out before we even got close. So it is a thing of pure imagination. A metaphor perhaps of utter artificiality. And thus an appropriate one for Star Wars. You make a good point about Dr. Pershing's fever-dream. From start to finish it was almost like one of these ST:TNG episodes where a character is being deceived by holodeck trickery into thinking they are experiencing an ideal reality. This is SW, so that won't happen here. The problem, as I see it, is *_still_* the sequels. Disney wants them to make sense, we have to buy into just *_how_* Palpatine comes back, into just *_why_* Luke Skywalker, so full of hope and goodness, becomes a bitter, defeated old hermit. So, contrived as it is, as badly done as it is, we now have to be shown that what followed the defeat of the Empire was just as bad, if not worse. I found it uncomfortable viewing, even as I enjoyed another great episode of a show I have come to love. Part of my brain was protesting, there's just no way the idealistic, altruistic Rebels of the OT would create a society like this. But... Palpatine's gotta come back, Luke's gotta be a guy who wants to kill his student in their sleep, so... er, this is the way.

exactly.. in reality, we are now all suffering the consequences of JJs and Ryans idiotic writting and watching the whole star wars world being morphed into something that directly contradicts the ending of Return of the jedi and george lucas vision. All the directors from favrou to filoni to tony gilroy are being paid to do this and to participate in disney canon version of things and build a world which has to suffer those consequences, and even worse, they have to sacrifice their own story ideas to actually try to patch up and fix all that stupid shit from the sequels, all the way from force healing to holdo manouvers to hyperspace tie fighters to palpatine retuning to the new republic being idiotic etc etc .. its a very morbid thing and we are now entering in this strange new era of star wars where we will have to watch this happen infront of our eyes for the next few years.. Untill now, in my headcanon, the sequel era was an alternate universe and the official star wars lore timeline stoped after the mandalorian era and filoni was somehow gonna retcon it, but obviously this isnt the case, and we have to witness this morbid morphing of the star wars universe now

8:30, While there isn’t any proof of this, my thought was that maybe amnesty housing is just repurposed clone housing from after they were decommissioned. Considering that the clones would be in their 80s at this point and most of them are likely dead, that would’ve left these housing complexes mostly vacant which would’ve been perfect for the amnesty program. It’s also a bit sick considering what the empire did to the clones, having those who left the empire be forced to live where they put the clones years before. They’re being retired the same way they retired the clones, only this time it’s the new republic putting them there.

Regarding not much changing under the new management of the New Republic, I think that while I lot of people decried the Empire for its cold control of the populace, the truth is that those who were in power and those of means liked that sort of control, and weren't going to do a 180 and relinquish that power just because the Emperor was gone. If anything, it gave them more opportunities to fill the power vacuum with their own people, to solidify their hold and their wealth gap as much as possible (after two massive wars over the span of a couple of decades, who really has the stomach to fight another one?). Sure, they'd have to pay lip service to the new government, but behind closed doors and in those rooms where deals are made, this was just business as usual, which is the sad truth of any reality.

5:28 I disagree with Mon Mothma. Her actions just basically allowed the Empire breathing room to rebuild and return. Making the army and navy small on purpose just allows the former Imperials to just go into deep space and rebuild, and come back to kick ass. I mean, hell, the Ancient Sith did it, but unlike the Ancient Sith, who had to spend 1300 years to rebuild, the Empire merely needed to spend a few decades in exile and rebuild, because they didn't need to build up much to conquer a weak republic. It's like what that general said in the Mandalorian, the one that Miggs shot: all they needed to do is outlast the New Republic, Imperial remnants are gaining strength in the Outer Rim while the New Republic eats itself alive. At this point, I'd rather have the Children of the Watch seize control of the New Republic so they can build up its military and use the wealth of the core worlds to provide arms and warships to fuel its growth. Then you'd see prosperity and strength to the point where the First Order would be nothing but a border skirmish against the might of the Mando-led New Republic. Heck, they can even give jobs to former Imperials by putting them back in their old military gigs, just make them swear allegiance to Mandalore and the idiot holding the Darksaber and they're good to go.

It's different because the writers of Andor would never have written something so dumb as all the doctors and technicians leaving an ex-Imperial alone with the dial of the mind flayer. That's the difference with these show vs. Andor. The attention to detail is not what it should be. The bar for Star Wars quality is Andor's attention to detail and all of Star Wars deserves that nuance and none of the shows have had it besides Andor. Boba, Kenobi, and Mando have all had flashes of brilliance. They just aren't consistent and the pacing is off too. This story would have been so much better if they had told it in short bursts the entire season for pacing sake.

To answer your parting question: yes, it was worth it. I'm a Filipino who grew up in the Marcos dictatorship and I have witnessed how a country heals and improves a long period of corruption -- very slowly. In real life, dictatorships come about when a society starts to slide a little for various reasons and the people become increasingly anxious, selfish, and prone to believing in demagogues. When a smart demagogue comes, they vote him into power. He enhances the worst in them while strengthening his grip on power. Sort of like the massive scale version of how a child reared by an abusive parent gets messed up and becomes a copy of that parent. So once a rebellion or revolution occurs and the dictator is removed, you still have to fix the mess left behind with the help of a neurotic and traumatized generation of people you're not sure you can trust. Once evil has been introduced in a culture, it takes generations before everything improves. It's never instant. This is something I have seen for myself, and I am not surprised that the Star Wars IP is now showing this reality more and more. But you can't be jaded, either. Star Wars has its iconic heroes who are undeniably good and real life does have saints. Change for good does come, after a long struggle and great sacrifice.

I think the only difference for courasant is that by this point its no longer the political centre of the Galaxy (the new republic capital now being a rotating sensate), but what that does mean is that the hogh-paloi of Courasant now don't even have to feign interest or knowledge of galactic affairs and politics because they're no longer in the centre of it. I did like the little touch in the mind wiper room of the "soothing music" being played in the background - i know it was a high republic line, but I do remeber Loran Dee, when imprissoned, mentioning how during their "therapy" sessions they'd play calming music and have a whole "self reflection" theatre to just mask the fact that they were all imprissoned on a prison ship, made to undertake labour and regularly interrigated by republic security personel. All the republic did was paint a happy face on the wall.

This episode, the Coruscant side anyway, made no sense to me, it really did not hang together well. Firstly why do Lucasfilm always want everything to be grey, the buildings, the clothing and most of all, the opposing sides. Star Wars used to be black and white, good and evil, that's why it was such a success. It harkened back to the days when we knew who to cheer for and who to boo, now everything, good or evil, has to be grey and confusing. Why would the New Republic be acting just like the Empire did with rehabilitation camps and screwing with peoples brains? Why would they be destroying perfectly good Imperial starships, just as Palpatine did with Republic starships after the Clone War? Why would Pershing go from addressing a stadium full of people who like him and want him to help the New Republic to a simple desk job? If Elia Kane is not a New Republic spy, and she obviously isn't as she is addressed and spoken to by the mind flayer operator as if she was an ex-Imperial and a success for the Amnesty program, then why does she get off after breaking the law with Pershing? And if she had gone to the New Republic and said that Pershing had gone bad why would they believe her? Doesn't Pershing make a far better person to recruit to the New Republic than a communications officer from an Imperial starship? After WW2 the German soldiers, after a de-briefing, were just sent home and that was that. They weren't held for ages in camps, the Allies wanted to put the war behind them. Operation Paperclip is a good call back as it was the Allies attempt to recruit important German scientists to come to the West to work for them. Why isn't Pershing being treated that way?

She's still loyal to the empire. Eating that travel cake at the end was confirmation.

Did they say that Elia was New Republic Intelligence? I don't remember that being mentioned in the episode. I assumed that she is a plant for the Imperial Remnant that snitched on Dr. Pershing under the guise of "doing the right thing." Although, if she is supposed to be NRI, that would explain why the guards let her walk away with the mobile lab, which I thought was really weird.
