A major new history of the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as Byzantium), from Constantine to 1453 by author and scholar Anthony Kaldellis.
In recent decades, the study of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, has been revolutionized by new approaches and more sophisticated models for how its society and state operated. No longer looked upon as a pale facsimile of classical Rome, Byzantium is now considered a vigorous state of its own, inheritor of many of Rome's features, and a vital node in the first truly globalized world.
The New Roman Empire is the first full, single-author history of the eastern Roman empire to appear in over a generation. Covering political and military history as well as all the major changes in religion, society, demography, and economy, Anthony Kaldellis's volume is divided into ten chronological sections which begin with the foundation of Constantinople in 324 AD and end with the fall of the empire to the Ottoman Turks in the fifteenth century. The book incorporates new findings, explains recent interpretive models, and presents well-known historical characters and events in a new light.

Big thanks for this one, Kelly. Dr. Kaldellis is my second favorite Romanland historian, next to Dr. Leonora Neville. The fact the I am a Senior Auditor here at the University of Wisconsin, Madison has absolutely nothing to do with that preference, of course. My copy of The New Roman Empire arrived last Saturday. My last class of the semester is next Monday. So, I will have the entire Winter Break to enjoy it. Note to my fellow WHE colleagues: I will be accepting Sherpa applications until noon on Monday, December 11, 2023. This is an absolutely beautiful book: 1,133 pages of high-quality paper and binding. The 15 maps alone are worth the price of admittance. Cannot wait! - Pete

Charles Diehl was one of the greatest Byzantinists of all time. For example, his work, "Manuel d'Art Byzantin", despite being from 1925, is very comprehensive, and the tradition he left behind is enormous. For instance, with his disciple Bréhier, whose trilogy "La civilisation byzantine - Les institutions de l'empire byzantin and Vie et mort de Byzance - still today is a very relevant work, his description of the Byzantine navy is briliiant. It is a shame that it is forgotten that those who write history today owe so much to many generations, starting with Thucydides"

I was disappointed that he made no reference to his previous book, “Streams of Gold, Rivers of Blood: The Rise and Fall of Byzantium 955 A.D. to the First Crusade,” which was only published in 2017. I understand that “The New Roman Empire: A History of Byzantium” covers more of the early empire, but as someone who has read “Streams of Gold” - and enjoyed it - I wonder why he didn’t do a compare and contrast other than that he’s trying to sell a new book.

Hi! Thanks for watching! This interview was based purely on his new book. 🙂 I'm not sure if he compares and contrasts the two books somewhere else.
