If anyone watched the previews for this episode, you would realize there's some Rudy to this one. And here's the ending, it's heartwarming isn't it? Especially after all the injuries to the characters.
So therefore, I give you The Newsroom's rendition of the Jersey Scene from Rudy
All credits to Aaron Sorkin, HBO and whoever else made this show. It's not my creation

I began by saying that our history will be what we make it. If we go on as we are, then history will take its revenge and retribution will not limp in catching up with us. Just once in awhile, let us exalt the importance of ideas and information. Let us dream to the extent of saying that on a given Sunday night, a time normally occupied by Ed Sullivan, is given over to a clinical survey on the state of American education. And a week or two later, a time normally used by Steve Allen, is devoted to a thorough-going study of American policy in the Middle East. Would the corporate image of their respective sponsors be damaged? Would the shareholders rise up in their wrath and complain? Would anything happen, other than a few million people would have received a little illumination on subjects that may well determine the future of this country - and therefore the future of the corporations? To those who say people wouldn't look, they wouldn't be interested, they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply -- there is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate - and yes, it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it towards those ends. Otherwise, it is merely wires and lights in a box. Edward R. Murrow

This is a real feel-good scene, and I love it. But I always laugh when Will says, you guys forgot your fyffe and drum when the camera goes on Jim, Elliot, and Don. Does anyone else remember that drawing from American history textbooks of the three Revoutionary War era soldiers playing the fyffe and drum, and they're bandaged just like Jim, Elliot, and Don? it's a picture that I think every American school kid of a certain age must have seen. Just cracks me up, because they put the bandages on in just the same places.

I just caught up to this program on You-Tube because I'm too cheap to pay for cable; not really, but I seldom have time to watch these programs on a regular basis anyway. I love performances of Jeff Daniels and the others; but Aaron Sorkin's writing is awesome. Just think about that for a moment. A person sits down with pen in hand and with just a few words scribbled on some sheets of paper, they produce something that will be memorable. Of course it doesn't hurt to have someone that is capable of speaking those words in a way that resonates with the audience too. Like Lincoln, and the 'Gettysburg Address'!

growing up with an abusive parent--someone who was supposed to love and care for him endlessly--stunted the development of his self-worth and self-esteem, so he compensated for it by overachieving and seeking validation from an his audience, hence his obsession with ratings in the first part of the season. this was likely one of the first instances that he got his validation for something he did behind the scenes and out of the spotlight, thus validating him for who he was on the inside.

West Wing is a gem, and so is The Newsroom. But both are because the creators knew when to stop. Nothing is worse than when the audience watches you while you run out of ideas (X Files, Big Bang Theory etc.). This way, WW and TBBT will be remembered in a positive way, as it should be.

Sorkin has explained that writing serial television is too exhausting for him these days. Keeping a series going is hard. The cast gets other projects going, shooting schedules get condensed and expensive and yet the writing has to stay at a high level. It’s a lot.
