Exactly but the thing is is that they're aware of what their doing but they just don't care. As long as we keep providing them our money they will never care about us until we do what they can so easily do to us, and that's go on strike. The government wants to go on strike with us we the people should be able to do it with them!!!

that's it! Aaron Sorkin is a musician in words! in other words- he's a word composer. I can like shows, there ideas, the dynamics, the word games, but on the news room I just LOVE hearing the words woven into each other, each sentence into another. AMAZING! which empowers the message of the power of words. (excluding the curse words which I hate hearing) thank you Aaron for 3 great seasons of romantic idealism painted so well.

One of my greatest days was when I was on a KZfaq comments section and some idiot had said something like (about America) "we gave the world the American language.We're the greatest country in the world. We gave the world Democracy" something stupid like that. So I figured, fuck it, I'm never gonna get another opportunity to use the speech again, so I rewrote it a little to fit it being a reply to his comment, but mainly left it intact, I'm not American, I'm a Brit, so I changed it from "we" to "you" and then I posted it. Got a couple of good reactions from commentators, nothing major, but most of them were kinda in shock and awe at how I'd basically destroyed his whole argument, with this whole long speech full of stats. (I had made sure to state that; these stats were from around 2012 and I doubted they'd gotten any better). Additionally cool that most people didn't know it was from The Newsroom. But yeah, felt bloody awesome being able to use it and getting some love back for it.

A criticism of America doesn't mean the person criticizing is anti-America, for God's sake. If you proofread an essay you wrote and cross out words and write new ones in their place, does that mean you hate your essay? No. You are trying to improve it. If that is too difficult a thought for you to process, then I am wasting my time responding to your comment.
@Hoshimaru57

Okay then how do we change that? Can we, or is it so ingrained in our culture to be afraid of ourselves that we will self destruct if we actually try to improve? Ask yourselves realistically: Would we be willing to do what it took to be better? I don’t think so. All I’ve ever seen is hypocritical optimism. We only do good when we have a point to prove. Otherwise people don’t do shit to change every day. And they won’t. I won’t. I’m afraid to be better, I don’t know if that’s true or not because all I know is the lies I tell myself.

I think we are the greatest, but that doesn’t make us the best. I think people should stop using the word great because it doesn’t always mean good. Also, I think people are a little too quick to introduce the European model of economics to America. It may work, but we are a vastly different country and economy, so I think people may be oversimplifying the problems we have and exaggerating how good of a solution a more socialistic economy would be.

Why America is the greatest nation in the world: No nation in human history has had the combination the US has had of power, influence, wealth, quality of life, accomplishments, medical breakthroughs, correct orientation toward human rights, openness, individualism, tolerance and democracy, the longevity of democracy, the universal ideas of the US, and the mechanisms of government, as well as the minds of Americans constantly questioning to improve, to continue to make America better. The criticisms, which are legion, and many of which are justifiably so are incorrect in their implication which, without saying so, implies that the numerous problems of America across an array of topics, stand in stark negative contrast to another nation or nations, that they would imply is better. The problem is that no such nation, which has been large, diverse, influential, and heavily engaged in numerous complex conflicts in the world, has ever been as good, much less better, than the US on the balance of good intentions, positive impact, and ability to channel influence and power into positive impact. Analogous nations, whether the imperial powers of Europe, Persia, Rome, Egypt, Mongolia, China, or any other major nation through history, have a track record of enslavement, colonization, and destruction compared to that of the US. Now, a common argument against this point is that America has done its own fair share of destruction and colonization, a legitimate argument. But if one took a serious look, one could not argue that the pure colonization, enslavement, and/or destruction of weaker nations that was a common practice in human affairs for thousands of years compares to morally ambiguous wars going askew, instances of torture, war crimes, and American involvement for the collection of resources. Lest I sound flippant and reductive of these major mistakes, I readily acknowledge that the list of American terrible mistakes is long and makes one seriously question anyone who would claim America has a divine morally objective right to decide the world. But even in saying that, the reality is that human nature is such, and conflict between nations, and the humans that make them up, has made conflicts between nations so intense, harsh and ambiguous, that even the very spotty record of the US sets them apart from any other nation that had a major role in history. I have heard people say that this may be true, but this is only because America is the world super power in a time in human history where human rights are given more importance than ever before, a time when we have the knowledge and human capacity to be more reticent with our power, and that America is not so much better in this more enlightened time than previous powers, who operated before society was more fully conscious of tolerance and rights of the other. I find that a somewhat compelling argument, but I would say that this “more enlightened world” has only become so as the result of a relative acceleration toward that affect that kicked into high gear right after the end of WW2, right as Pax Americana started. So the whole context of the modern era necessitating more care for human rights and the other, has only come about so strongly because of specific American actions and influence. I hear other arguments against America being the greatest nation in the world in the sphere of social, economic, racial, and other societal measures. I would say that it is clear that there are certain smaller nations that have a higher average quality of life than the US, but for one, likely all of those nations are able to do so secure in the peaceful liberal world order overseen by the United States. More importantly, the types of nations, generally the smaller European nations, are specific nation archetypes that will always be more oriented toward high quality of life provided that there is a powerful “Arsenal of Democracy,” allowing them to focus on their betterment. Essentially, if all liberal democratic nations were like New Zealand or Denmark or Finland in power, influence, and general nature, the world would be completely dominated by autocrats, authoritarians, fascists and all other forms of illiberal government. This is not a knock on nations like Denmark, but it should be said to recognize that in the real world, certain nations need to take the role of liberal democratic in orientation, but powerful and engaged in the world, and power and engagement necessitates aspects in a nation that would make it impossible to have the highest average quality of life and most spotless moral record, aspects like large population and economy for a powerful military, as well as a willingness to get your hands dirty and engage in so many conflicts to a point where you are eventually forced into doing morally ambiguous things. This isn’t to completely absolve the US of all the wrong its one, but it is important in contextualizing the situation. For the benefit of nations like Denmark, there have to be democratic nations like the US who become such nations that pure average quality of life can never match the likes of Denmark. Of course even within this context, the US can make changes to make life better, but those are at the comparative margins when we understand the type of nation the US. An aside should also be that one of the things brought up, healthcare, is not discussed in a fair way. There are certain things the US could improve in healthcare, but the narrative of free healthcare in foreign nations while Americans go bankrupt is very inaccurate in its implications. Besides the fact that foreigners much pay more in taxes and thus have less money for other material things, the US system does not have the same rationing and waiting time as others do. Furthermore, the US system comes up with the most advancements for healthcare and medicine, which other nations then use. Therefore, other nations’ quality of healthcare is higher because of America’s specific system, which is then pilloried. Additionally, the US system has the ability to more effectively treat urgent aspects of diseases. This isn’t to say the US system is better, it is to provide context to show that the disparity isn’t as wide as made seem, even though I think the US could learn some aspects from other nations. And this applies to most “examples” of lower quality in the US. And of course this is in the context of the aforementioned fact that for the flourishing of small peaceful democracies, there need to be an Arsenal of Democracy, which will then by its nature have a lower average quality of life. Even with all of this known, no nation as large and diverse as the US in human history has veer had close to as high an average quality of life. When you combine it with power, influence, accomplishments, longevity of democracy, institutions that orient the nation toward improving, and mix of pure power with emphasis on morality and understanding of its own imperfections, no nation in history comes close to the US. It might not have the top average quality of life in absolute terms, but when put into proper context, no nation compares to the US

I don't even have to read your bible to tell you that the US isn't the greatest country in the world. Just look at the statistics. Many countries are both safer, happier and just in general better than the US:

Wow, you took a long long time to make claims with no substantiation. In short; the US is sub-par in too many metrics to even be considered top tier.

There was a time - when the United Sates was the first actual democracy and led the way for others to follow. But not just that - our Revolution didn't fail. The French Revolution - which was the next one - degenerated into a bunch of head chopping and then was taken over by Napoleon. The most successful after ours was that of the British. Here we got a lot from the British. They laid the ground work for our Revolution and it's their culture that made ours work. But that doesn't mean that were weren't all fucked up. Washington had to put down a mutiny by his officers because they hadn't been paid in months and the prospects of them every receiving the pay they had been promised - went away. Thank God we had George Washington. He could have been King if he had wanted but he said something like "I didn't fight one war against a King to replace him with another one." Look at Congress. Look at how utterly fucked up it is. The Great Glory of Democracy - is mediocrity. Things aren't so good but they aren't all that bad either. We alternate now between Liberals and Conservatives. Each side gets their chance to fuck things up for a while and then we vote them out and let the other guys have a turn. We don't vote FOR people - we vote AGAINST them. .

POINT OF FACT: The United States Of America is A REPUBLIC and has NEVER been a "democracy"! The Founding Fathers RIGHTLY, JUSTLY AND CORRECTLY despised "democracy" because it would be trading the TYRANNY of a MONARCHY for the TYRANNY of another form in the MAJORITY in which there would be NO RULE OF LAW! LEARN THE FACTS LIBTARD BEFORE POSTING NONSENSE! P.S. the french revolution was NEVER a "democracy" LIBTARD it devolved into ANARCHY as soon as the peasants stormed the bastille!
