Jim Carrey, smartly, fought for Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne in' Dumb and Dumber' knowing that they needed an actor, not another comedian.

The suits are there to make money. If they just so happen to make a good film in the process, they'll take it. But most are chasing money and making decisions based on what they think will bring in the cash. That's why the superhero franchises get re-booted so often. How many Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman re-boots do we need?

Agreed, and honestly.....the sequel never should have been made. It was more than just the dialogue between Jim and Jeff in the first film that made it so great, it was the little nuances of how they played out the scenes that just shot the hilarity factor through the roof. It's kind of something that just worked, and they admirably tried and failed to replicate that in the sequel.

So Jim Carrey got Jeff Daniels into the movie by doing all Jeff Daniels scenes in the first week, knowing full well that once on film the studio would see how good Jeff Daniels actually was and want him to stay. Genius! In other words Jim Carrey took a back seat to his friend for the first week in order to work with him. Jim had the loyalty and confidence in his friend Jeff Daniels to put himself on the sidelines. Not many quality people like that in the world, much less in Hollywood.
@jimmyeatsom33753 жыл бұрын
As much as it is told that Jim was backing Jeff the whole way, and I agree with that. I dont think it was his decision to put so much of the first week's focus on Jeff, at least not for the reasons you state. It was probably all just a case of the studio saying they didnt want Jeff and Jim + Director saying they did want him. Studio applies pressure. Jim and D come up with a compromise to do a lot of Jeff's stuff in the first week so that the studio could review the dailies and make a judgement call. They would have been watching the dailies every day, and having a bit more of a chat about it on the weekend. For Jim's part, I think he just had faith that Jeff was the right call and supported that call the whole way through. When the First week trial idea was put on the table, he most likely confidently backed it knowing that Jeff would smash it. I dont think Jim had to set aside his ego to allow Jeff to have the spotlight as you put it. I think it was simply the machinations of the film production business.
@KS-xk2so2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyeatsom3375 This. I'm sure that first week "audition" was a compromise that the studio agreed to when Carrey and the Farrelly Brothers were pushing hard for Jeff and the studio didn't want him. Ultimately the studio and directors decide the shoot schedule. This is a great example of how stupid studio interference often is. They're trying to tell Jim Carrey how to make a comedy..... idiots.

Hollywood means "sacred tree". It's got shit to do with the art of acting. It is about occult stuff, that you can't even begin to understand. google "Harrison Ford 666", "Johnny Depp 666", "Leo dicaprio 666", "Tarantino 666", "Emma Watson 666", "Jackie Chan 666", "Kevin Spacey 666", "Jonah Hill 666", "Jared Leto 666" and so on.

Jeff was an established actor, but back in 1994, he had sort of left Hollywood for a few years. Yes, he became a star in the 80's with Terms of Endearment and Purple Rose of Cairo, but in the late-80's, he and his family relocated back to his hometown of Michigan because he didn't want to raise is children in LA. He continued popping up in indie movies, but they were not widely seen, and Jeff had started a theatre company in Michigan

The diner scene when Sea bass gets hit with the salt shaker, he comes over & Lloyd dobs him in, Sea bass asks Harry if he's going to eat his burger, the way he answers was comic genius, love that scene

No disrespect to Jim Carrey, but Jeff Daniels was the funniest part of the movie. Carrey was smart in fighting for him. He knew what he was doing.
@nsasupporter75573 жыл бұрын
@dave miller disagree. Jeff was not funnier than Jim. Did you forget the most annoying sound in the world scene? That was ALL JIM CARREY. Jeff was just apart of the audience in that scene. Had Jim been in those other scenes with Jeff, Jim would’ve stole the scenes from him. Neither one was better than the other

Jeff Daniels has so much to offer with his acting skills and he deserves to be acknowledged as one of the greats. From Dumb and Dumber to The Looming Tower he is just awesome at being anything he wants to portray.

Let's be real. The only comedian that could top Jim is Robin Williams.

That would've been a interesting movie if Robin Williams had been cast
@Brinta34 жыл бұрын
Very different comedic actors. Both great in their own way. So I think ‘top’ is not the correct word here. Jim would totally suck as Mrs. Doubtfire and Robin could never have made Ace Ventura a success.

Saw Daniels interviewed nt to long ago. And the one thing that really struck me was when he said.. "I was never in it for the Hollywood thing.. I didn't care about being famous. I just wanted to be good." That's class.

There are a lot of comedies that I like, but still there are some jokes here and there that are kind of duds/don’t work. But with Dumb & Dumber, every single damn joke/line/gags WORKS! And Jeff Daniels is a big part of it.
