In Part 1 of the EcoMino build we give you the run down on what parts to use and how to get them into your old GM A - body. If you aren't swapping a Chevelle or El Camino, don't worry this engine package is so small and light it will work in anything an LSx will and more!
The Ecotec engines found in many economy vehicles is a hidden gem from GM.
It is an all aluminum 4 cylinder engine built with very solid potential.
The secret is that since Saab had gone out of business you can pick up these Ecotec's out of a Saab 9-3 for dirt cheap from a junkyard. And they are showing up in junkyards in droves. So don't miss out.
The Saab version is already turbo friendly with better internals. We made over 400 WHP with this stage 1 tune set up. But you can find different variations suitable for your power needs in everything from cavaliers, cobalts, saturns, and more.
The possibilities are endless with so much power out of such a small package.
Stay tuned for a lot more content on this vehicle.

Love this build! I have also done a non mainstream swap in my truck where most would do a LS I swapped in a 3100v6 with some boost!

@@jamalcole1985 yeah haltec will run the ignition and fuel etc... my le5 has electronic throttle on it and haltec does not support that and you can't put a drive by wire on it. So the factory ecu will still control that

@@8.2deck Do you know how many of the different ecotec engines use drive by wire or if it's a pretty universal feature of these engines in general?

Keith MuletownDyno I Definitely wondered when I saw the one piece bottom end... I bought a G6 that skipped a tooth or two, who knows... Didn't run. I was able to revive it, no bent valves. Pulled the pan off to clear all the guide plastic from the oil pickup screen and check a couple rod bearings. Big, one piece bottom end!
@MuletownSpeedandDyno
@MuletownSpeedandDyno 4 жыл бұрын
For sure the bottom ends are crazy. Timing tensioner and guides are the most likely failure point from people that let these motors run too low on oil. Get a good timing chain kit and keep oil in the motor and it is strong. Sometime the internal Pcv can get blocked up and these engine especially with turbo will start drinking oil based on my experience.

Going to follow this... I have a 2006 Ion Redline with the supercharger, and would love to put that motor in something RWD like a hot rod. Factory boosted Ecotecs can easily hold 300+ HP on stock internals.

@@MuletownSpeedandDyno Years ago, Hot Rod Magazine did a write-up on modding the LSJ, and with cams, a TVS blower, bigger TB and 60# injectors, they got 370HP from it. At that point, the intake manifold/intercooler was the biggest restriction to making more power. www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp-0907-gm-ecotec-bolt-ons/

Due to this video working on my own RWD Saab 2.0T swap. Trying to get a list made up of parts I need to buy LSJ ecu, coils, coil harness, injector harness, cam sensor. Then Colorado trans, accelerator pedal, salve cylinder, clutch pedal, throw out bearing, pilot bearing. Solstice clutch cobalt ss flywheel, cobalt ss pressure plate. Anything I am missing? Re-wire Saab throttlebody connection.
@MuletownSpeedandDyno
@MuletownSpeedandDyno 4 жыл бұрын
You will need a solstice bellhousing to mate the Colorado trans to the Saab motor. Those are getting harder to find but there are people who throw them out when they build a Colorado trans to go behind their Supras. So you can look at supra forums. (This will likely be the hardest part to find) you might be able to get an adaptor made but at the time of our building it was easiest to get a solstice bellhousing. If you want more than about 250 hp you will need to change out the stock Saab turbo. I am working on a cheaper solution to this right now. Hopefully get a video out on it soon. But the new set up will use a cheap 120 dollar eBay gt35 turbo and 55 dollar external wastegate. Hoping for about 600 hp Depending on what size turbo you go and what fuel you run you will need injectors. For e85 at 400hp we were running the 80 lb injectors (from eBay set of 4 was 40-50 dollars) For 600, we are still testing but will likely need upgraded fuel pump and bigger injectors. Depending on what car your swapping into I would suggest just getting a modern plastic fuel tank from a junkyard that fits and has a decent fuel pump in it to begin with. Our Pontiac g5 fuel tank supported up to 400 hp with no issue and for us it was free sitting in the yard from previous race car parts car.

Muletown Speed and Dyno Thanks for the Reply. Great info. Really enjoyed the original video too so looking forward to more. I am trying to build the car for the $2000 challenge put on by grassroots Motorsports magazine . Seems like you guys could do a killer build, for that. I am swapping into a 1993 Mercedes 190e, that I bought from a salvage auction. It has a odd gas tank location so I am going to try to use the stock tank but has an external pump already so I can upgrade if I need too. I am not looking for much more than 250HP to start with. This is my first swap so it is really nice to be able to follow along in your video. I was able to pick up a solstice bell housing too, from someone using the AR5 behind an LS.

I'm not a guy to get pissed off at people doing motor swaps from other manufacturers, but I got REAL salty when I read the 2JZ in the description. By all means, put one in a foreign sports car, not an American icon like my beloved ELCO LOL. but, I'm decently ok with the Ecotec XD

We love our American engines too and tend to stick with them, but I wouldn't put it past us to something oddball like a BMW engine in a Camaro or something weird like that. The main reason we don't is cost.
