The expectations for Age of Sigmar's impending 4th Edition has got me thinking about the Umbraneth - the rumoured faction of Malerion - and whether they’ll finally make an appearance in the game.

I just hope that 4th edition updates the skaven line a bit. So many of the models are so old and it's has so many that are still metal and resin that it really does turn people away from the Faction. I hope everyone's army gets something, but skaven need a little love.

My real hope is that they'll be playing the main villains of the next edition. 1st ed was Chaos, 2nd was Death, 3rd was Destruction. Skaven are Chaos in name only so they'd be perfect

I think there are two new races which have been pretty solidly hinted at now, being Umbraneth and Chaos Dwarfs (the latter of which was all but confirmed when the Krule Boyz came out). I think there's a strong chance both of these will be released in fourth edition. Besides that, I think the Skaven could really do with a refresh; while their range itself is fine, they really need some new lore and new identity because they feel like they've been sidelined quite hard in AoS. We should see some pretty fundamental differences from WHFB Skaven given that the Great Horned Rat is literally a Chaos god now, but currently we just don't have it.

The whole thing with "legacy" factions in TOW all but explicitly spelled out the AoS roadmap for the next couple of years. GW desperately wants to purge all the Fantasy models from their AoS lines, so it's pretty much a guarantee that the factions more heavily populated with them, like the Skaven or the Ogres, will receive fairly substantial updates during 4ed. Likewise, you can expect the AoS version of the the Dark Elves to drop in that time period as well as a way of flushing out the remaining DE models - DoK will likely be wrapped up in this somehow for the same reason. The Chaos Dwarfs are really the wild card in all of this. They could potentially fall into the trend of the other TOW legacy factions, but the chorfs, functionally, haven't had accessible models for almost a decade. That being said, AoS has a surprising number of significant nods towards chorfs as of late. As you said, Krule Boyz are riddled with references to them, but there's also a warband in War Cry called "The Horns of Hashut" - as well as two actual chorf models in two separate warbands. On the other hand - GW does hate dwarfs, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have been sitting on my two cents on what we could expect from Malerion's force for a long long time: Mandrakes (who happen to now have their finecast models discontinued) from 40K are said to be shadow beings that come from another *WORLD* (not the warp) where there are "shadow daemons". Malerion commanding shadow-daemons is one of the first things we heard about him in AoS, and that "other shadow world" would be a pretty on-the-nose description of Ulgu. This is just a thought, not claiming that they'll run with this. But it's a very good fit!

Really good suggestion - and I think those sorts of shadow aelves fit a clear gap in the aelven factions right now.

Umbraneth vs legions of azgoth ( I believe that’s what the chaos dwarves are called these days). If this is the boxset they release for 4th edition then you beat I’d by it in a heartbeat. Plus it would lead into that classic fantasy trop of dwarf and elf rivalry.

As a DoK Player, I hope Umbraneth will be put into one BT with DoK. It would make collecting much easier and the army's are pretty similar in style. The difference in gameplay on the table could be done by choosing certain traits when building the list.

It makes the most sense. Two armies of shadow elves with inspiration drawn from the WHFB Dark Elves just seems like bloat. Given the DoK limited range, rolling them into a wider army makes a ton of sense. Having them be two separate but united armies in one BT has some precedent. Look at pre-10th edition Drukhari, which was basically 3 subfacrions aligned tfether

Although it may more be a fact of Ulgu rather than Malarion, I find it worth mentioning that during the Realmgate Wars, the Stormcast Eternals that were sent to Ulgu (to contact Malarion I think) came back with memory loss, not having any idea what happened in Ulgu.

At that point we'll have more elf armies than two GAs have armies in total, and we still don't have Teclis' stuff either. AoS is rightfully derisively called Age of Elfmar; somebody at GW has an extreme elf fetish.

Elves have always had a wide array of armies in warhammer, or rather elfhammer, this is because James Workshop is actually an elf in disguise.

In the core rule book for 3rd edition theres some bits talking about the inabitants of ulgu and while it says the typical "cruelhearted elves" that we expect from dark elves. It also mentions that where the lumineth live with and revere the spirits of the realms, the inhabitants of ulgu subjugate their spirits and force them to do their bidding. Would like to see a battlebox between lumineth and umbraneth as it is mentioned either in the core rule book or the lumineth battletome that Tyrion has been testing ulgus defenses in expectation of a war with malerion

It will for sure be very interesting what they do with the shadow aelves when they finally reveal them, do you think they will join the DoK or be their own faction? Same question when Tyrion gets back into the mix, will he be another centerpiece for the Lumineth or will it become its own faction? Will the Elves mirror each other like they did in the old world?

My idea is umberneath are either going to be dark elves, but aslo might be inspired by lovecraftian horror, secondly we got imagine two things, one is that he might be watching events since the start of the age of myth, it very likely he knew almost everything, secondly he might be busy on something i belive his exile house's the coverns, the order and the fleets are bieng pulled into the land of ulgu kinda an rebuilt of the druchi society, i know a lot of the druchi who dwell in the very citys, and it seem they are bieng pulled to ulgu due to various reasons however i feel like we might see umberneath in the 2024

I've never played AoS, but I had a pretty big Dark Elf army back in 2nd Ed. WH and even though I don't play anymore, I have at least 10k points of Dark Eldar for 40k. So if anything could GET me to play (or at least buy models) it would be this.

I would be very surprised if Tyrion doesn't get a big massive Lumineth Vs Umbraneth and Malerion box in AoS 4. You can't just say Tyrion is going down to Ulghu at the tail end of 2nd edition and then leave us hanging for 2 whole editions before paying that off

I think if we get a new faction or 2 form the upcoming 4th edition I think that GW needs to up their and create an outstanding new elvin faction cause there is already so many elves in aeos. Also their is still a ton of factions that need new models and need updating like Skaven and Fyreslayers. And I definitely do think its about time for some ORDER ACTION, as I'm kind of sick of all this destruction and chaos, about time order got some mega units !!!!!! MORE UNITS FOR ALL THE ORDER FACTION!!! (and me personally I want to see some more smaller draconith models that are units that arnt as big as draconith guard and arn't on flying stands) And of course the new starters set would have to make us fans interested in picking them up so they absolutely have to be good!

I just hope they don't force too harsh a Cities of Sigmar split, splitting Dark elves completely off. There are people out there who have crafted their armies around both. At the very least there should be decent allying rules.

So at start of 3rd release there was whisper that we were getting 3 army’s dawnbringers crusade , Malerion and the Umbraneth , and chaos dwarfs. And that we getting models for one of dwarf gods and sigmar.

Considering how big Malerions powers are (and the fact that Morathi's ascension to godhood and the creation of the Daughters was a sort of half attempt at surpassing her brother), my votes are on an Order specific god-mercenary! Sort of like Kragnos for Destruction or Nagash for Death. Any Order army can field Malerion in his special shadowy demon form, but he has his own "Umbraneth" keyword which he shares with mercenaries released for Warcry as 4th progresses. I'm also holding my thumbs for a range refresh for Skaven, maybe as the Eshin Monastaries in Ulgu are overrun by Dawnbringers, pitting Skaven vs Cities of Sigmar as the launch box.

I hope more chaos dwarf than umbraneth first they (umbraneth) exist a bit in city of sigmar and in DOK second Wargamer wait for chaos dwarf by GW since 25 years . So I hope dark elves are not a total new army they are just a forgotten part of army who already exist , for that chaos dwarf / Vampire coast are more more more appelling to me .

We’ll have to see - my money, if anything, would now be Umbraneth or Chaos Dwarves coming by 2026 (we normally see a new faction two years into an edition), but Skaven getting a refresh this year. Could be wrong, but I’m sure it’s all coming in 4th Edition 😁

Our club has seen a massive shift of late, with barely anyone playing 40k and loads of games of Sigmar. AoS is very much alive and kicking 😊
