For the last 105 years, the National Hockey League has not only been regarded as the premier level of competition that the sport has to offer, it has become the most successful and most profitable hockey league the world has ever seen!
Though the rulebook has been changed drastically and the overall level of play has seen vast improvement with each passing decade, the league has come a long way from it's early days. In fact, the 1917/18 NHL season saw a plethora of controversies both on and off the ice that would seem downright ridiculous in the year 2022! Whether it was a blazing fire that burned an arena to the ground, a team disbanding just 6 games into the season, a pair of players being arrested mid-way through the year or the circumstances that led to the creation of the league itself, the NHL's debut season was nothing short of scandalous!
So in today's video, let's explore exactly what happened during the league's inaugural season of play and discover exactly why the NHL's first season was northing short of WILD!

I'm curious to know where these players came from. I mean, nowadays most professional players begin training before they can walk, but back then were these guys just local guys working a job and playing some shinny for fun? How did we get from there to here? Thanks for another great video

Thats a great question! You could find alot of answers by looking into certain players histories. Alot of players back then were working farm boys. who indeed played hockey for fun, but to be honest im not too sure on the particular paths these players took to get to where they are !

Well judging how there was an official team composed of military players, I’m pretty sure there wasn’t much to making the team. Maybe they had like tryouts before every season started for any available slots on the team?

Thank you for making this. My grandfather played on the arenas. Harry Mummery. He won the cup with quebec bulldogs in 1912 1913 season and the in 1917 1918. He was paid 333.00 for the year and lived in Brandon Manitoba, where he was a locomotive engineer in the off season. To my knowledge he was the first american born player to play in the nhl. He was also the largest man in the league at 5' 11" 240 lbs. Seems small for this day and age. He was also a bit of a baby maker having 11 kids. Thanks again for making this it put a smile on my face.

That pic of Hull & Gretzky at the 1979 WHA All-Star game, I cut it out of the newspaper and framed it. They were and are my 2 favourite players of all time. I even used all Bauer gear as a kid & teen because The Golden Jet & my favourite NHL player Guy Lafleur used Bauer.

The History of the Stanley cup is also very interesting, since at one time it was a Challenge cup and there has been a few different versions of the Stanley cup through out the years. I didn’t know this until I went to the Stanley cup vault at The Hockey Hall of fame in Toronto.

A fire that burnt down the only suitable arena for big-time hockey in Montreal, a team that disbanded just because that team's owner didn't want anything to do with the French-speaking population, two players getting nicked by the Canadian rozzers, another player petulantly paying the rest of his fine in pennies, another team winning the championship but not able to pick up the league's championship trophy so the had to "make do" with the Stanley Cup, and the entire league being formed because one particular team owner was acting like a total dick. If the internet was available in 1917, this would have definitely been the first ever Weird NHL. What's even more weird? Not even so much as a mention of Gary Bettman.

Very informative video, and quite interesting that the NHL started how it did. Almost foreshadowed how things would go throughout the history of the league.

I find it funny that even when Toronto wins their playoff series, they still weren’t awarded that championship. Idk, that just seems so Toronto lol. Though, they did go on to win the Stanley Cup so it ended up working out.

Games had an average of 12 goals, most goalies had much higher averages and he was the first to record a shutout...a SO in a league that averages 12 goals per game, anything under .400 would be considered elite.

What year did helmets become mandatory?
@gonuts4donuts
@gonuts4donuts 2 жыл бұрын
Any player who entered the league after June 1, 1979 had to wear a helmet, but any player who signed his first pro contract before then could opt out if they signed a waiver. Craig MacTavish was the last player to not wear a helmet during games. He retired at the end of the 1996-97 season. So essentially, from the time the NHL was formed, it wasn't until the 1997-98 season that every single player who stepped onto the ice would wear a helmet of some sort.

@@KidTonyGaming yeah, it was a sight to see lol. I was born in 1989, so I didn't get to see very many helmetless players as I remember starting to watch hockey around the 1993-94 season (thanks to my Canadian uncle). But I did get to see Craig MacTavish a couple times on TV playing against the Red Wings and then when St. Louis came to Detroit for the 1996 playoffs. It was strange seeing one guy with no helmet when I saw them during the playoffs. Unfortunately I wasn't at the famous Game 7 where Detroit won 1-0 in Double OT after Yzerman got a loose puck that Wayne Gretzky mishandled and buried a slapshot from the blue line. Back on the topic of helmets though, it wasn't even until 2006-07 when it was mandated that from that season onwards, all on-ice officials had to wear a helmet. No exceptions. There were still referees on ice with no helmets up until then believe it or not. One of the last to not wear one was the late Michael "Mick" McGeough. He wore one for two seasons until he retired in 2008.

@@gonuts4donuts now that you mention it, I do remember not seeing the zebras wear helmets in the mid 2000s. I remember when goalies we still able to wear Jason style mask then, they made wear catcher style mask and ruined the vibe
