I tried a new DELUXE room in the Nightjet sleeper train from Germany to Italy. On this 14-hour journey from Munich to Genoa, I review the onboard showers, en-suite, breakfast, tell you what surprised me about my shared room, and reveal what I'm travelling down to the med in search of...

What I do almost every time when I take a night train is ask the staff (while they're checking my ticket) if more people will join my compartment later. They're always very happy to answer that. It's also good to know when your roommates will be getting off, so you don't get an unexpected wake-up call at 4am!

Objectively, Nightjet breakfast is ok, but not good. But, after a long night in the train, Nightjet breakfast is just awsome!

Always love a Nightjet deluxe room. I also lucked out with a private room on my last Rome-Vienna NJ without paying for one. Also fun fact- there are tables stored in the corridors which fix on to the wall so you can enjoy a romantic brekkie with one person say on the bed and the other on the cuck seat. Idk where there 3 person would go tho lol. Great video mate!! 🎉

Growing up my parents and me always took the night train from Berlin to Italy. I remember it being super chill and relaxing. We usually didn’t get an en-suite but being a family, it’s actually quite nice to just book a room for 3.

Honestly you kinda sold me on this night train! I always pictured them as shady stuff in which strangers are waiting for you to go to sleep to steal your stuff, but the possibility to book a whole room to yourself is great, especially when traveling with a boyfriend/girlfriend or two or three friends. Will definitely look into this option next time I have to go to Hamburg or Amsterdam.

How cool, I took that one just last September for a vacation in and around Genoa, though we transitioned (had to transition?! Cant remember) in Milano. Normally don't get much sleep in night trains either, I'm quite a light sleeper unfortunately. Still lovely though for avoiding flying. Awesome luck with the lone 3-person room! 😊

We did Nightjet from Paris to Vienna last month, and then Vienna to Venice a week later. We splurged for the private room with a shower for the 2 of us, and it was definitely worth it. I don't think I was as well rested as I wanted to be, but it was still cheaper than flying and one more hotel night in Paris, Vienna, or Venice (and no early/late flights to maximize the day too).

A great video @TomThornton ! Your editing and other post-production work is definitely first-rate now. Congratulations on the luck of getting a private compartment for the price of sharing one with two other people. I've never been on that train but this triggered memories from my 5 years living in Germany. I wish I had a video or even some photos of my train journey from Frankfurt to West Berlin via Helmstedt station on the "Cold War Express | The British Military Train - Berlin" (search KZfaq). I rode "The Berliner" from Helmstedt station in West Germany to West Berlin and back in the Fall of 1977. I was chosen for what was then called the Berlin Orientation Tour, and I was issued the requisite Flag orders required to make the trip. It was a bit surreal traveling so slowly through East Germany, doing some unauthorized peaking out through gaps between the blackout curtains and window frames, seeing East German troops standing along the entire route of our super slow journey. As a US Army enlisted man, I was assigned one of the six berths in a compartment where we were supposed to sleep through the journey. I don't think anyone slept on that trip, as we were either attempting to take a peek outside or there were card games and a lot of low level chit chat (we were supposed to stay silent as well as out of sight). Once we arrived in West Berlin we had an authorized crossing into East Berlin via Checkpoint Charlie, afforded to us due to the status of forces agreement between the four powers of Berlin. The train ride and that half day in East Berlin form some of the greatest memories of my life. I'm hoping that you eventually get a sponsor for your KZfaq channel and that they pay for you to take all of the first class travel options around the world. I think you are a great narrator and storyteller.

Only have one nighttrain journey under my belt so far (Stockholm to Narvik), but I am hooked. It's just so cool to go to bed in one town, and wake up shortly before you roll into another town. Sleep wasn't that great of course, but good enough to comfortably get through the day the next morning. And yes, showering on a train is also quite the experience. :D Thank you for your amazing content. :)

What a fabulous travel vlog. Perfectly narrated too. I loved the use of English... was it a chosen concoction of carbs? By the way in busier months you risked having someone join you who had not booked and wanted to upgrade or had booked since your train left Munich, however they would have filled unoccupied compartments first.

This video is up to your normal high standards but with a bonus. You have managed to find some kind of magical way to get the light to warm the whole frame and also to give a kind of halo effect. I am not sure how much this was just part of the good luck of the whole trip, or if it is something you hae experimented with.

You need to try the Finnish VR night train, (ie santa clause express) from Helsinki to Rovanemi. You can book a private room with an ensuite shower for less than 70 euros in March or April. It is the most modern and even best sleeper train in Europe. Not to mention that it is a double decker train as well. And it takes you above the Arctic circle..... 😊

Night train from Munich to Genoa is my go-to option for catching a Mediterranean cruise from land-locked southern Germany, because I could just log off from work in the evening, hop on a train, and wake up in Italy right next to the cruise port in Genova Piazza Principe. I took the 4-person couchette this January for 79 euro each way (a shared sleeper with wash basin but no private WC costs 119 euro). I always look at the number of water bottles to deduce how many person will be sharing the room. I also tried the new Nightjet from Hamburg to Innsbruck last week in a shared sleeper (with 2-in-1 toilet + shower) for 130 euro, and the other guy felt uncomfortable sharing a room with a stranger, so he opted to pay extra for his own private compartment, which meant I also got my own private room for free 🤣

Love the review. PS: There is a rather big table you can attach to the bar (where the water bottle was) below the window. I can be stored in various places. I have found the table under the bed, agains the wall in an economy-compartment (without shower), or in the corridor, … You can always ask the steward of your carriage to help you find and install it. You just have to take it and click it in, that way your breakfast will be more comfortable :-) It explains why there is a folding seat in your cabine as well, so that you can sit at your table, or face to face with your travelpartner(s).

I mean 180EUR compared to Breakfast (10EUR) + lets say you found a flight from a budget airline (40EUR + getting to and from the airport) + 1 night of sleep and shower (say 60EUR) Its actually quite reasonable. Hefty investment initially, but the cost is pretty okay and you can travel with more luggage for free IIRC. So right now, Vienna to Milan is 340EUR with the nightjet both directions Lets say 8-13 June. So on the night of 8th you catch the train, on the night of 12th you catch it back. Cost for the 9-12th stays is around 250EUR. With Ryanair, flights are 32EUR total, but the extra two nights raise the price to 450EUR and the airport transfer tickets add another 30EUR. So the total price is 590EUR vs 500EUR. A mix of nightjet + flight is 180EUR + 350EUR + 16EUR + 15EUR, so 530EUR. So maybe a mix of both is the key to go, especially if travelling as a group and can take an entire compartment. But it really isn't meant for budget travelers. If you are on a budget, eventhough its a lot less environmentally friendly, the flights are the way. The prices are gave for night stays are average not luxurious bnb but around the city center prices. You can go lower, in fact the whole trip could be had for less than 400EUR for 5 nights and the flights or 540 for the nightjet. So there is a price-hike definitely. But it is good that a night-train renaissance is happening, maybe in a couple of years the prices will be more comparable. Also the prices are for this specific arrangement of a 3 person compartment with a shower. There are other options, you can sleep in a room without a shower (140EUR), in a room with even more people (4-6, starting at 54EUR), at a seat (starting at 40EUR). So there is a way to make it work on a budget, you just wont have the comforts.

You should really do the sleeper train route from Belgrade > Bar in these old trains before they replace them and completely renovate the route. (it's in the plans and some work is already being done) Don't think it will take a long time.. few years at most. It's about 50e for the ticket. Amazing scenery and amazing route in general. (Shit trains yes.. but it pays off nevertheless)

2:37 I get that its a joke but just wanted to clarify that most of the delays are because of the network. Delays can be because of actual faults/problems with the network or just because the German rail network is heavily overloaded. So taking a different company in Germany wont help you :p
